After the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt ordered America’s top military brass to determine how to retaliate quickly. A Naval task force was organized to take sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers to a point 450 miles off Japan’s coast. From there, they would strike five Japanese cities. Led by Jimmy Doolittle, the daring raid inflicted significant damage on Japan’s industrial heartland and removed its aura of invincibility. The successful mission boosted morale back home and marked a turning point in WWII. This photo of Doolittle was taken April 10, 1942 on the deck of the aircraft carrier Hornet prior to the mission. It is signed by 2nd Lt. Richard Cole (Co-Pilot, Crew #1 with Doolittle), Lt. Bill Bower (Pilot, Crew #12), and Ed Horton (Gunner, Crew #10). Framed print measures 11.5”h x 13.5”w.
