My CFI and I had just started our takeoff roll in a 172 for night takeoffs and landings -- Airspeed was alive, we were coming up on 40 knots when POOF the entire instrument panel went black! So I did what any new pilot would do...elbowed my CFI and said "C'mon man, this ain't funny -- let me get a few of these done before we have an emergency." Tim, my CFI said "It ain't me". So quickly I went into emergency mode, one hand on the yoke, one hand on the throttle, and the third hand for the flashlight. Wait...I DON'T HAVE A THIRD HAND! Luckily Tim had a free hand, so he held the flashlight and the flight went off with out a hitch. Right then, I decided to purchase the LED Hat Light! This thing works! I chose the Red LED although it does come in white also. One tap on the button and I have bright light shining where ever I point my head. The light is bright enough to read the instruments, but not too bright that it is distracting. It is an excellent hands-free light! No fumbling for a flashlight, then trying to find a place to place the light that won't fall to the floor or have to be moved several times a minute. Also, while you can turn it on and off with a light press of the button, if you leave it on, it doesn't reflect in the windscreen -- you can still see outside the aircraft. Finally, it is so lightweight, I don't even notice I am wearing it on my hat when I fly in the daytime! An excellent all around product. ConsThe only thing that one has to get used to is the narrowness of the light beam. In other words, you have to remember to turn your head when you do your instrument scans instead of just moving your eyes. You'll figure that out right away, and it doesn't interfere with your scans. General CommentsThis is well worth the purchase price -- it pays for itself the first time you use it. If you have to use it in an actual emergency, it will be priceless. By the way, the problem with the instrument panel was in the wiring behind the panel -- yes, I did check the circuit breakers as soon as I lifted off and established a positive rate of climb. |
