Seemed to be fairly easy and strait forward to use strait out of the box, both flying and driving.

    Cons

Some querks with the location of the body power/computer connection port (behind battery cover) - not the most convienient, but workable since it is would not be used real time that way.

    Color Touch Screen.
Pretty easy to navigate through screens.
Heading, GS, and ETA displayed on map screen.
Easy to zoom in and zoom out.
Pointer function can come in handy.

    Cons

Lack of carrying case--Ended up buying a Case Logic case for an external hard drive that works great.
Lack of external battery charger--you have to buy this in addition to the unit.
If you are charging the battery through the unit, there is no external indicator that lets you know the battery has been fully charged.

    General Comments

Overall I am very happy with this GPS. I have only used the unit once from KIAH to KAUS, but I have toyed with the unit extensively. I didn't go with the higher end units because I didn't want to pay for XM or AOPA safe taxi. If I am at an unfamiliar airport I can always ask for progressive taxi. Overall recommendation--good buy

    Cons

Display does not compare favorably to the 296. Poor resolution, the auto display is extremely poor.
Not intuitive, menus are extremely complex
Auto direction prompts were too late to take action.
Auto GPS can not be used in the city. My iphone does better. As a matter of fact, there are any number of iphone apps that perform better than the Aera 500.
    Subscriptions are extremely costly.
Garmin customer service wait time excessive (45 minutes)
    Limited display options

    General Comments

    A total disappointment.

    Pros

Easy to use menus; lots of settings for personalization; customizable alarms, warnings, etc.; the ability to switch between aviation and auto mode; all relevant info for aviation waypoints/airports is available at the touch of a button (frequencies, runways, etc.); the unit acquires satellites quickly.

    Cons

The map updates were a little cumbersome (both aviation and roadway); no carrying case included; no A/C charger included, but the unit charges when attached to the PC via USB, so no big deal.

    General Comments

Overall, I'm very impressed with this unit. It is exactly what I expected it to be. I had to keep the unit "awake" while doing the roadway map update by clicking on folders in Windows Explorer, but once I figured that out, it updated just fine. If I didn't do this, the update never finished! That was a pain, Garmin...

I haven't had the unit long enough to comment on durability, but I figure since it's simply going to ride in my flight bag until an emergency, it should last for years. It appears to have everything I need as a VFR pilot. Flight planning is straightforward and simple. The Direct-To function is easily accessible, and the maps can contain as much or as little information as I desire.

Switching to Auto mode is simple, and the maps there look and act like any Garmin GPS. The C-172s I currently fly have GPS built in, but knowing I have a backup in case of emergency is priceless. I would recommend this unit (or any of the aera line) to anybody.

    Pros

    Easy to use.
Construction seems robust. But too early to comment on durability or reliability.
Touch screen navigation of the device is relatively straighforward and easy to learn.

    Cons

The yoke mount is useless for a Citabria. Bought an aftermarket suction mount and that did the trick. The included friction mount is big and useless in a plane.

Not having an AC adapter in the package is silly.

Somewhat overpriced. But, that's true for all aviation GPS I'd say.

    General Comments

So far, so good. Only used on one XC flight in a Citabria, to date. Performed as expected.
FYI, nuvi batteries and mounts work the the Aera and are much more readily available, locally.
Bought a Garmin AC adapter to allow charging/programing etc., away from the airplane.
Bought a second battery since the Citabria doesn't have a 12 V power plug.
