I am a new pilot so I wanted a GPS to give me self confidence in my cross country trips. The Garmin aera 550 was more than I expected. It was so easy to use and the information it provided was excellent. One of the greatest advantages for me was the amount of time I saved using the GPS. I was able to plot directly to my destination and as long as I followed the indicated direction, I did not not waste any time getting off course and then back on course, thus saving me time and most importantly, money.

Cons

The only drawback that I have found (it is really not a drawback if you have an external power source) is the battery life.

Wow! I just started using it but I am already impressed! The terrain awareness screen is worth the $1500! Very comforting to know the terrain ahead of you especially when vectored off the airways and you know mountains are in the area (common in Southern California). Safe Taxi Charts cool! Seeing the Victor airways on the map is helpfull also! No external antenna required when mounted on the yoke in my Cardinal -- I had to have one for my GPSMAP196. One other cool thing -- you can have multiple Direct To waypoints. For example -- I was navigating on my active flight plan when ATC gave my a new route. I simply used the Direct To function to load the next two (new) waypoints and my destination airport and then I activated that route -- I never did go pack to my original active flight plan. My GPSMAP196 could only navigate to one Direct To waypoint at a time! Love it!

Cons

Auto dash mount kinda clumsy. I don't want to leave it on my car's dah so I bring it in the house when not using the GPS in my car. You have to use that dash mount, by the way, to use the wall (AC) charger. The aircraft yoke mount is great -- car mount sucks!

At first it appeared a bit overwhelming so I just decided to sit down and read the guide. The beauty is that a lot of it is common sense as to what to press and when. There are other things that need to be done in sequential order. As with anything, us guys really should "read the directions" first. Being able to use the simulator mode is a big plus in the learning process.

Cons

I think the price is a bit high but it's new on the market and as with anything, the price will likey go down a bit after while, but you just have to decide when you want to get in and get your feet wet. I really haven's seen any bad thing about the unit yet.

General Comments

This is an excellent unit for VFR navigation. Dealing with Spoty's is always a pleasure. They have a very knowledgable staff and are easy to make contact with. The Garmin Aero 550 has so much information to offer and the versatility of using it in auto mode is just one more big plus. I bought my wife a Garmin 1200 for her car at Christmas and she feels just as happy with that. Good job Garmin.
