By utilizing a built in GPS coupled with a 406 MHz transmitter, these beacons are able to alert search and rescue teams around the world of your location within minutes of activation. In an emergency, they could quite simply save your life. With three levels of integrated signal technology—a high sensitivity, 66-channel GPS, a powerful 406 MHz signal and 121.5 MHz homing capability—the SARLink View quickly and accurately relays your position to a worldwide network of Search and Rescue satellites, reducing search time and increasing your chances of survival. Integrated LED strobe light increases your visibility to rescuers. You can also send "I'm OK" messages with GPS coordinates to your friends and family. Great for checking in when you don't have cell phone coverage, and allows your position to be shown on a map (yearly subscription required). Subscription information New digital display allows you to monitor all the beacon’s operational activities. The screen displays GPS LAT/LON, operating instructions, usage tips, transmission burst as well as battery power. The digital display also makes self-testing your beacon simple and easy to understand by visually walking you through the self test, step by step. Built-in GPS acquisition test mode allows you to test GPS functionality up to 60 times over the life of the battery.

Seems pretty durable like it could be tossed around a few times and still work. Simple operation and display shows you what's going on. Unlike Spot Messenger, you can call for help without any subscription fees. Also uses a more reliable system than Spot. ConsThe 406link messaging service is kind of a clever hack- it just listens for the 'self test' messages from the PLB and acts when it hears them. Might be good for telling people you're still alive if you're going hiking in the wilderness. But because it uses the 'self test' function of the PLB every time you use it it wears down the PLB battery a bit, and after a certain number of self tests you need to mail the PLB back for a battery replacement. General Comments I've never had to use my PLB other than testing it. Hopefully I never will. |
