Do I Need an External iPad GPS? The 3G model of the iPad, in addition to its built-in cellular antenna, also includes an internal GPS. The GPS is completely separate from the 3G data service, so you don’t even have to have an active data plan for the GPS to work. You could buy the 3G model purely for the GPS and never activate the data plan, saving yourself some money. But the on-board iPad GPS was made for ground use, and it’s not very reliable in the air. It has a tendency to drop offline, especially when switching between apps. For this reason, most iPad pilots—even those with a 3G iPad—opt for an external GPS. They are extremely accurate (WAAS-enabled) and very reliable. They also offer free apps that allow you to monitor the GPS’s performance. General CommentsGreat device that completes the ability to use my iPad and the Foreflight app as a good back-up for the aircraft avionics and supplement the situational awareness especially in IMC. Have used on a few flights so far and have been very impressed with the performance and ease of use. Very comforting to cross-check the position on the geo-referenced approach plate and see that I am on course.

ProsThe battery has stayed charged for me longer than advertised. I left it on in the airplane over night and still had plenty for the flight the next day. Very easy to hook up and pair.
ConsIt can only pair to one device at a time, but then that's why they call it pairing and that's blue tooth.
General CommentsI use this with my iPad for navigation. It is a must if you are running ForeFlight. Easiest fastest set up imaginable.

General CommentsI have used this GPS receiver several times with to my IPad and it always works. This is much better than the built in IPad GPS receiver which would occasionally loose signal if it did not have a good view of the sky.

ProsSmall, light, extremely easy to set-up and use.
ConsWhile it comes with a throw-down rubber holder so you can sit it on top of your panel, it'd be nice if a hard-dock was included or at least available, but this is a very very minor criticism.
General CommentsSmall, easy and, so far, 100% bulletproof. 'It just works' is one of the highest complements I can give it! Zero issue connecting via bluetooth to my ipad1. I wish it was just a little less expensive, but that may have caused a compromise in quality. The case seems very sturdy. Documentation is brief but more than thorough enough. It comes with a rubber mount/mat that you slip the unit in to that should keep it from sliding on your panel or dash. Reported battery life is more than adequate, but I haven't tested it beyond about 2 hours so far. It comes with a 12V cigarette lighter power adaptor so you should be able to recharge it in most aircraft.

Love the Bluetooth for my non-GPS equipped Ipad. Remote from Ipad so I can put the Ipad farther away from windshield. ConsI had trouble turning it on. You have to press down firmly for a few seconds before it turns on. I did not figure that out right away and sent it back only to find out that I was doing it wrong. Actually, it's probably a good feature to protect you from accidental battery depletion. I have not used it in the cockpit yet But seems to work well at home. ConsWhen not in use it looses it charge rather quickly. After testing, it will loose its charge when turned off and not plugged in. After 5 days sitting turned off it was down to 83% according the Dual SGPS150 Status APP. General CommentsI rated it low and do not recommend it because of not being able to retain a charge for very long when not plugged in. While turn off and your out away from the airplane it still drains the battery. If your away for several hours you may loose the battery life you need for use. |
