Product description: Subscription-free weather, GPS and single band traffic. The original Stratus is the easiest, least expensive way to get subscription-free weather on your iPad. Stratus is a totally wireless, portable receiver that streams NEXRAD radar, text weather, TFRs and GPS position to the ForeFlight app—all without a monthly subscription. Simply turn on Stratus, connect to your iPad and go flying. There are no wires, no subscriptions and no hassles. Why Stratus is different:Totally wireless. Other weather receivers require power cables, external antennas and messy installation. Stratus is completely portable. With an internal GPS, built-in ADS-B antenna and 8-hour battery, there are zero wires, and the non-slip case can be placed out of the way.Longest battery life. The last thing you need to worry about when you’re avoiding weather is whether the battery will die on your weather receiver. So Stratus has an 8-hour rechargeable battery built-in. No cigarette lighter is required, and you can fly all day on a single charge.Seamless integration with ForeFlight. Stratus is the only ADS-B receiver that works with ForeFlight, aviation’s most popular app. That’s because Stratus was designed from the ground up to integrate with the app, so you can view complete status information right from the moving map page. Stratus simply works the right way.Incredibly easy to use. With just one button and virtually no setup, you can take Stratus on every flight. After the first use, Stratus automatically connects to your iPad, so you can simply start ForeFlight and go flying. It’s perfect for renters, flying clubs and corporate flight departments.WiFi connection allows multiple iPads to connect to Stratus. ADS-B coverage varies by location and altitude – does not work on the ground in most locations. Coverage not available outside US. Comes with charging cable and 110V wall plug; charging cable works with all 2.1 amp cigarette lighter plugs as well. Measures 4.25" w x 5.75" d x 1" h. Weighs 11.4 oz. Made in USA.Requires ForeFlight Mobile app (version 4.5 or higher – free update available). iPad 2 or higher is strongly recommended for best performance. Also works with iPad Mini.“Stratus is not only a terrific product, but it’s one for which I’d give a very strong ‘buy’ recommendation to our readers.” —Robert Goyer, Flying MagazineRead the ReviewFrequently Asked QuestionsHow good is ADS-B coverage? Stratus receives weather data from a nationwide network of ground stations, so you must be in range of a station to get updated weather. This network is being built out by the FAA, and much of the country has excellent coverage right now. In general, east of the Mississippi River, throughout Texas and up the West Coast has good coverage above 1000 ft. AGL. See this map for latest updates. What about overheating? Just like your iPad, Stratus has a large lithium battery inside, which can overheat in extreme temperatures. To prevent damage, the unit will shut itself off when it gets too hot. As a result, we recommend you do not place Stratus on the glare shield when in flight. The ideal position will allow for reception of GPS (view of the sky) and ADS-B (view of the ground) signals while staying cool. Options include a co-pilot seat or back seat. An optional suction cup window mount is also available, and provides for the best GPS and ADS-B reception, and virtually eliminates any chance of overheating. What weather products will I receive? Stratus sends the following weather products to ForeFlight: NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, SIGMETs, AIRMETs, NOTAMs, Pilot Reports and wind/temperature aloft. What's the difference between Stratus 1 and Stratus 2? The first and second generation Stratus receivers share a lot in common: both receive subscription-free ADS-B weather, both include a WAAS GPS, both are totally wireless, both feature an 8-hour battery life and both work with ForeFlight Mobile. Stratus 2 adds dual band ADS-B traffic (Stratus 1 is single band, so not as complete a traffic picture) and a built-in AHRS for backup attitude information. Stratus 2 is also 30% smaller, with improved GPS performance and better heat resistance.Additional ResourcesADS-B Coverage MapStratus™ Frequently Asked QuestionsRead the Stratus™ Pilot’s GuideSpecifications, FAQ, and MeasurementsPilot Report on Flying with Stratus ADS-B Traffic 101 Getting Started Video Our Webinar on Stratus"In this case marketing really did prove to be the reality... it performed flawlessly." —AOPA Pilot"The most compelling alternative to satellite weather we've seen." —Aviation Consumer"It's the best deal I've ever seen. Pros

    Handy weather updates

    Cons

The GPS connection for position was only 95% reliable and sometimes it loses the location for several seconds. The GPS altitude was 2 or 3 times by 300 feet off of the local airport elevation.

    General Comments

The ADS-B only makes sense when you have towers in the vicinity. Here, out west, are not that many towers available when on cross country trips. A lower cost GPS would be maybe a better choice for just to have your location addressed on the iPad. But then, again, once it found a tower it was nice to see the thunder clouds on the iPad just around 100 miles west of us so we changed route.

Bad port or plug for antennae cable
    Pros

Works great when needed in weather

    Cons

Plug or port to antennae does not keep a connection after minimal usage over the last 18 months. The weather drops off when this happens

    General Comments

I wanted an occasional backup to my weather radar in my Astra, so I ordered this item, along with all of the accessories. After about 14 months of ownership, I find that the plug port won't keep a connection to the antennae, and the signal drops off. For $900 and low usage, I am disappointed that the connector ( or the box) has gone bad

    Pros

Unit works perfectly. Goodbye to paper charts. Hello to efficient cockpit organization.

    Cons

For the amount of actual electronics equipment and manufacturing involved I feel the unit is way overpriced. Compare that you can buy a large TV with a remote and a wide variety of features for $300. $59 for an external antenna? Just because something is involved with aviation does it need to be overly expensive?

Very easy to use. Links to foreflight with a simple wi-fi connection. No other configuration required. Linked devices screen shows current status including battery life, etc. Battery outlives iPad battery.

    Cons

Does not provide traffic data. I would prefer that the system warn the user that traffic data is not complete unless user has extended squitter transponder rather than not have traffic altogether.

Watch device temperature. Placing the receiver on the instrument panel in direct sunlight can cause it to overheat and shut down.

Great product for the most part.
    Pros

Works as advertised. Great for the 'big picture'

    Cons

    Poorly constructed.

    General Comments

The stratus does what it's supposed to which for me, is updating metars and NEXRAD. Flying a fuel critical airplane, the amount of data is critical for safe and effective decision making that not all operators are willing to pay a subscription for. It is not a substitute for your on board weather radar. Just like with xm weather, it's reassuring to see the squall line or cells in their full scope. I was a little worried about the heated w/s in the falcon but situated right next to either D/V window, never lost a signal. I wasn't very happy with the plastic the device was constructed with. At $800 you would think they could invest in a polymer that didn't feel like the same material they make water guns out of.

Know in advance that coverage is spotty
    Pros

Great backup to have on board if my MFD isn't getting a broadcast.

    Cons

Very spotty reception means the usefulness is limited and should never be depended on for primary weather avoidance.

    General Comments

It takes a few checks and settings tweaks to be sure you have it connected right to get the right data with certainty, but that's no big deal. The spotty coverage and reception (despite many variations on mounting) are my only complaint. This is a great backup but not dependable for primary weather avoidance, as it might suddenly have no radar coverage.

    Pros

Completely simple to set up and works as advertised. Turn on on and connect via WiFi - that's all.

    Cons

Instructions (that are in the Foreflight manual, not packaged with the project), would benefit from more detail.

    General Comments

Nice to have the extra information in the cockpit for a relatively reasonable cost. Haven't been able to figure out what determines the frequency of updates of thing like METARS which seem to be delayed more than I would expect for some sites but not others. This is probably a 'feature' of ADS-B but some explanation of appropriate expectations would be quite helpful, especially if it was context sensitive.

    Know defect: fragile charging connector
    Pros

The Stratus is very easy to use and works pretty much as advertised.

    Cons

Fragile charging connector; Only works with Foreflight; No traffic by comparison to similar products in this price range that offer both weather and traffic

    General Comments

Today, I am returning the unit I purchased for exchange due to a broken charging connector - a known defect. Rather than send it directly to the manufacturer for service/replacement it is necessary to send it first to Sporty's so they can send it on to Appareo. I don't know how long this will take but this does not seem like the best way to do it. Also, if they don't re-design the power connector I would hesitate to receommend these. despite the fact that they are easy to use and work as advertised when charged.

Flew from central Illinois to southern tip of Florida. Updates were more timely in the south and along the east coast. Very limited to no updates in Illinois even though there were three towers available. I expect information to improve as more towers are available. Mounted the Stratus on the window behind the pilot seat and used an external antenna mounted on the front windshield to avoid the overheating problem. Mixed Feelings
    Pros

The ADS-B reception is good once airbone, but that is as advertised.

    Cons

GPS is reception is problematic. During straight and level it work well while on the glare shield. During training (I'm an instructor) reception is poor. Keep getting the same answer, try to 'reclocate' the device. Well jumping from one aircraft to another several time a day makes that a bit difficult.

    General Comments

Initial reaction, not as well made as expected.
GPS needs reception needs work. Not nearly as good as a Dual GPS for ForeFlight.

    ADS-B works well.

A timely basis would allow enough time for you to try the product once or twice. We feel 30 days allows ample time to do this. After 30 days, we will continue to support the product for a full year, but refunds and exchanges are not accepted.
