Use these cables to interface the GDL 39 with a Garmin portable. Depending on what type of GDL 39 you originally purchased, you may need one of these cables in order for it to display information to a Garmin 796/795, 696/695, aera 500 series, or 496/495/396. The cable has a cigarette lighter adapter on one end, and splits to provide power for both your Garmin portable GPS and GDL 39. A wire within the cable is a data connection to allow the GDL 39 to feed ADS-B data to your Garmin portable. Most portables will require a free update from the Garmin website to allow them to display the ADS-B information.

doesn't work with some of the other programs beside Garmin (yet), but I'm sure it will in time. Works great with the Garmin Pilot App.

Also for Android with Garmin Pilot
    Pros

Designed to work seamlessly with Garmin Pilot and did so on my HTC EVO adroid phone and my friend's iPad Mini. Easy to set up and connect. Good range of weather products.

    Cons

The battery option is really mandatory so you don't lose the ADS-B service when the ship's power fails, as mine did.

    General Comments

I have only had this for a week or so and used only twice, so too early to tell about durability or reliability. I was not flying in an area where traffic information was available, so cannot comment on that.

    Not subscription free
    Pros

App is nice, foreflight is a little easier but overall Garmin has done a good job. Product is extremely easy to install and connect to devices.

    Cons

When they say subscription free they are referring to products in a product. You will pay minimum $50/month for Garmin Pilot. Its like getting a Cirrus SR22 for free if you buy a $500k hat. You don't get one without the other. Extremely misleading in my opinion. I still have not been able to get Radar and satellite to load, each time I get a failed to load screen on both ipad and iphone...

    General Comments

If the radar and satellite load problem gets fixed I think I would enjoy the product. It's still a $600/year subscription that has some traffic, so I guess its better than the $800/year satellite radio and weather...

    Sporty's Response

Garmin Pilot App is not $50 per month. It is $50 per year. You will need that app in order to use this device.

    It just works!
    Pros

The unit automatically turns on and connects to iPads when power is applied. We normally fly in the low 40s and with the external antenna, we never have a problem with reception.

    Pros

    Cons

ADS-B poor reception not reliable. I have Garmin panel mount TIS and Foreflight to compare to and its not comparible. I was expecting more. The garmin App is hard to negiotiate, again compared to foreflight. I'm hoping in the future the reception stations will improve and maybe the app. Thats my opinion

    Pros

THIS PRODUCT ALONG WITH ATC HELPED ME NAVIGATE THROUGH T-STORM SEASON ON A LONG CROSS COUNTRY FROM PA TO THE FL KEYS. IT ALLOWED ME TO SEE WHAT ATC WAS SEEING AND TO ANTICIPATE EXACTLY WHAT LAY AHEAD. I COULD DETERMINE IF THERE WERE IMBEDDED STORMS OR NOT. EASY PLUG AND PLAY AND USED ON THE FIRST FLIGHT.

    Cons

UNFORTUNATELY THE WEATHER ONLY WORKS WITH THE GARMIN APP WHICH IS NOT AS INTUITIVE TO THIS FOREFLIGHT USER. THE GARMIN APP HAS SOME NICE FEATURES, LIKE DIRECT TO, AND FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS, BUT IS A LITTLE MORE CUMBERSOME TO LAY OUT A FLIGHT PLAN. MAYBE I JUST NEED A LITTLE MORE TIME WITH IT OR THE APP NEEDS A MORE DEVELOPMENT TIME.

    Pros

Easy to use and updates without effort

    Cons

    None

    General Comments

While flying out of KJYO it alerted me to a plane 100 feet below heading directly at me.....he never made any calls and is was a hazy day so without this product I might have been a statistic. The screen alerted showing the traffic.....you can't miss the alert and it gave me about 3 minutes to scan the area and climb to avoid him! Worth every dime!
