Happy with my AV8OR

Excellent value, great quality, easy to use, great back-up GPS. As good as advertised.

Not a perfect product, but here are a few CONS:

Battery life is short even with extended battery which I suggest you should buy; the cigarette lighter adapter is a must on every flight, the good news is that is already included.

Yoke clamp adapts well to the Cessna 172L yoke, but its grip is a little weak, same thing the craddle used to adap the GPS to the yoke mount, but no big deal.

After reading about the requirements for the XM weather feature, seems to me like it will be a real pain due to the receiver and other hardware you have to purchase.

So far so good! I Love it and highly recommend it. I've spent significat time comparing it against the GARMIN AERA 500. Both products are very similar, however the AV8OR is $100 cheaper and you don't have to purchase a charger for home use.

Worth your money

As others have rated, this is very user friendly. There are a bunch of features - many you will discover just by experimenting with the screen displays. Read the user guide to maximize the features.

My car suction mount often lets lose and tumbles to the floor. It has not done so however in my plane. Could be plaxi versus glass.

Does everything I need and more in the air and on the road. Good value for the features and items included in the box.

Very user friendly. I like the touch screen and the fact that you can set up your preferred features with very little instruction.

Screen is light sensitive if not mounted directly in front of the user and can be hard to see in daylight cockpit conditions.

Very easy to navigate and update flight plan while flying. Easy to read - LOVE THE TERRAIN PROFILE cability - it kept me and my passenger safe this past week flying thru mountain terrain.

They promise that if you register on their website you will receive a free update to the database. This was false. It wanted me to enter a cc to get an update until I complained to their helpdesk. Also, when I did the update, it completely changed my unit and it was not functional. It took some time to figure out how to get it working again. Unlike the AV8OR, the Honeywell website is VERY unfriendly and difficult to navigate to find information.

Highly recommend to any pilot as a sure-fire way to get where you are going safely and efficiently. This is a must-have in the cockpit!

Great Situational Awarenes tool. I couldn't imagine flying VFR near special use airspace without it. Very intuitive functionality. No issues reading the display in bright or dim ambient lighting conditions.

reliable, versatile unit that works well and does what you need it to. Very clear screen even with direct sunlight and cloud reflection. Great value for the money.

standard battery isn't worth even including.

Recommend the longer life battery for any flight over 50 minutes. You will get over three hours continuous life out of the extended battery.

After some difficulty downloading the updates which are necessary to get the instruments panel page, the unit worked pretty much as expected. Excellent manufacturer customer support. I had trouble with the power port and had the unit replaced within a couple of days by the manufacturer with no problems through a local dealer.

The online 277 page manual (mostly automotive mode) is cumbersome. I wish it came with a hard copy. It also doesn't cover a couple of the soft keys and their function and there is no index. I once was able to "grab" the flight path and pull it to a new waypoint with the help of a soft key but have not been able to recreate this move and the manual is silent on this. For some reason the complete VFR approach airspace doesn't always appear on the maps pages. The alerts as to approaching and being in defined airspaces is only a little message box at the bottom of the screen. You must click on it and leave the maps page to get the information. Garmin does a much better job in their '96 series in alerting you as to potential problems. You also keep getting the same annoying message that you are not hooked up to the optional weather service. I wish I could permanently delete this function. It would be helpful if you could make the NAVAIDS a defined saveable waypoint. The unit also has the media portion which does MP3's, photo's and video.

As a newer pilot I was looking for a good GPS that I could afford. A GPS that would make navigation through complex
(SF bay area) airspaces easier. Overall this unit is it. A good GPS for the money compared to the higher priced models. I would buy it again.

I didn't get into the automotive mode that much. Another day.

It was everything they said it would be and more. This unit is the perfect size. Everything I need is no more than a touch of the screen. Very intuitive. Within a few minutes you will have found your way around, without the instructions, and you will already be building flight plans.

No "pages" or"menus" to be fumbling with at nine thousand feet.

The battery life is not good. You definately will need the plug in (supplied) unless you are flying less than an hour.

Really a good value for the money and if or when you want you can get live weather on the screen. (reciever optional)

Easy to use and it does a great job of tracking. The screen detail was very easy to see in bright daylight. Great price for all the functions it performs. I understand that the IFR types want the approach plates but for us VFR types I can't think of a single thing I need it to do that it doesn't do. Also, it does not need the externam antenna. I've used it in the Aerobat and the Archer and it comes in great in both of them. Also, the drive function is far superior to my Tom Tom.

Short battery life. I let it sleep for most of the flights and just check it periodically to confirm my dead reckoning and to locate the airport if it's one that is hard to spot. Yoke mount is quite functional but cumbersome. In the Aerobat it gets in the way of reaching the throttle. The windshield mount works great, though.

easy to use and quick to boot up for use

wish it had a page for a HSI reading like some of the others. Yoke mount does not have enough of an adjustment to use on my Cherokee, will not adjust in enough, had to use suction mount on windshield which worked just fine but that blocks outside view somewhat

overall I am happy with unit...good price compared to others

Unit works well in both aircraft and automotive modes. Product is very intuitive, easy to set up and use. Downloading the database was very straight forward.

Yoke mount will not work in my aircraft, however the automotive suction cup mount works very well in both car and airplane. Screen is hard to read in bright light, have to shield with hand to read.

Overall content with purchase. Unit appears to be durable and well made.

Came with a $200.00 off coupon for WxWorx but the expiration date was 12/31/09. Tried to use the code but it wouldn't go through. Coupon should not have been in the box.

Very small and portable. Works very well as my backup emergency GPS.

Screen size is small, not sure id want any GPS at this size as my primary GPS by any manufacturer. I bought this one because Garmins new portables are just too pricey for my taste. Battery life is awful, dont leave home without the cigarette lighter plug. I have this in my bag as an emergency backup for which this unit will work well.

Good value next to new Garmin portables.

It does everything and more than what I needed. It's a basic aviation navigator, and I love using it in the car too. It plays music, I have a photo album saved to view and I'm going to download some ebooks to it later. I love being able to us it connected to my cell phone via bluetooth when I'm driving in the car. It does everything! It's so easy to use tnat I don't think I read the instruction book or quick reference guide one time. I've used it already on a few road trips and one flight. Great value for what this does versus the price!

It doesn't have approach charts, which I'm not too concerned about since this is a perfect general VFR handheld GPS unit. The touch screen is a little too sensitive while in flying mode and hard ot use without the stylus.

I would recommend this to anyone. It is perfect to take along on any road or air trip or both. It does everything. It's the perfect started handheld GPS unit for pilots but even my wife who's not a pilot, loves using it in her car. The suction cup car mount works well both in the car and in the plane and even on my motorcycle and with the headset plugged in, I was listening to music while riding and navigating on my bike.

Very easy to use. Good features and availability for options. Good quality picture. I like the fact I have battery charger options.

The touch screen feature does not work as well with a screen protector. If a screen protector is used a lighter weight one is recommended.
