MA-1 Flight Jacket
Notes
Manufactured to strict United States Air Force requirements, the MA-1 flight jacket has a 100% nylon outer shell that reverses to high-visibility Indian orange for use in adverse conditions. Although designed for colder environments, the MA-1 remains comfortable in warmer weather if left open. Knit collar, waistband and cuffs provide added comfort while sealing off cold air. Includes four welt-type slash pockets (two inside, two outside) with snap fasteners, combination pencil/cigarette pocket with zipper on sleeve and pencil point protectors. High-waist design provides comfort while sitting. In our experience, the MA-1 runs slightly small. If in doubt, please order the next larger size. Notes

Date - 3-23-2011 Pilot Rating - Student OverallDurability Reliability Value Usability Expected Recommended Yes | The zipper on this Rothco MA-1 seems to be better made than the zipper on the Alpha Industries MA-1 that this jacket is replacing (due to a zipper failure). Note that both of these jackets use their own brand zippers; neither uses a YKK or Talon. ConsThe pocket snap fasteners on this Rothco MA-1 jacket are smaller and appear less robust than those on the Alpha Industries MA-1 that this jacket is replacing. Have had some difficulty with snapping/unsnapping fasteners, but they just may need some more use to loosen them up. The weave of the nylon fabric is finer on the Rothco jacket; don't know if that will affect the durability. Also, the fabric on the Rothco seems to be a bit more slippery than that of the Alpha. The fabric around the neck and at the wrists on the Rothco is also of a finer, softer weave than that on the Alpha; again, I don't know if that will affect the durability. General Comments This jacket, made by Rothco, is replacing an MA-1 made by Alpha Industries purchased from Sporties roughly 10 years ago. The Alpha jacket is being replaced due to the failure of the clasp holding the zipper handle to the zipper slider. The handle on the backside of the slider is still in-place but I really didn't want to wear the jacket orange side out. Other than the failure of the zipper handle, the Alpha jacket has been very durable; I can hope that the Rothco holds up as well. |
