Current Issue A-2 Leather Flight Jacket
Notes
Over 70 years ago the original A-2 was introduced by the USAAF. Our A-2 has all the style of its timeless predecessors but also sports narrow epaulets, hanging loop, patch pockets with snap closures, hand-warmer pockets, underarm eyelets, collar snaps, brown nylon lining, heavy-duty brass zippers and knitted wool cuffs that will not stretch or pill. Has two inside pockets, inside pencil pocket, an underarm expansion piece and a full-cut pattern for a looser fit. Jacket color is brown goatskin leather. Imported. Notes

I haven't owned it long enough to verify its durability. ConsIf you order one, I hope you really like the smell of leather, because this jacket's aroma is powerful! Other jackets in my closet ended up smelling like leather for a couple days after removing this one, which is hanging in the garage until it (hopefully) airs out. General CommentsAlthough I usually wear a large jacket, I ordered a medium per recommendations from previous reviewers. It fits nicely but the elastic around the bottom of the jacket is very tight (which is probably why the model is wearing it unzipped!) |

If you've ever worn an original or an early USAF re-issue, you know what I mean. I have a 44-45" chest, and originally ordered a 46 but returned it. The 42-44 had plenty of room for me. There's just nothing like the scent of new leather. Quality and finish look good. Stitching is neat & tight. Pockets are roomy and comfortable. As a retired USAF vet, I can confirm this is an issue-quality jacket. Bought one for me and one for my father (who was a B-24 tail gunner in WW2). We both love our new flight jackets. Can't beat the price, either. I shopped around but ended up back at Sporty's. ConsNo cons really. Just be aware that unless you plan to wear bulky layers underneath, buy one size smaller. ConsI ordered a Large Tall as this usually gives me a perfect fit in jackets. In fact the sleeves are a little TOO long for me in this size on the jacket. However, the length is right to keep my bum warm on winter days, so I'm not complaining! General Comments I would have liked a silk lining to the jacket [as in the originals] but recognise that this would have added considerably to the cost. I would have paid the extra if it had been an option. |

It even smelled like goat(must have been "hot off the press"). Elastic waist band snugs the coat up at the wrists and waist while the coat itself still remains comfortable. Quality of the leather is really nice, and it has the epaulet holders on the shoulders to give it that authentic "pilot" look. Pen holders are convenient (I use one for the arm on my sunglasses) and a a larger pocket for other things. Only thing I could see improving on is the hand warmer pockets. They seem to be a little too far to the side. It feels as if your hands are on your waist as opposed to other coats where they're a little in front. General CommentsAwesome coat overall. |
