    Excellent Receiver for the Desk
    Pros

    1) 5 channels provides sufficient number of frequencies to monitor in a given area.
    2) Does exactly what it is supposed to do - receive A/C transmissions

    Cons

Lacks filtering when using the 'wall Wart' power supply (noisy on the wall wart) This is N/A of course on batteries.

    General Comments

This is an excellent little receiver, for desk or office. The sensitivity is fine for this application at 10uv for 20dB SN/N. If this were actual avionics that would be unacceptable, as 1uV for 20dB would be expected. But this is a desk unit. As with any receiver, the better the antenna, the better the reception. I am using a unity gain VHF ground plane, fed with 50 ohm RG58/U Coaxial cable at approx 30 feet, terminated in a BNC male connector. I am currently receiving Seattle Center, KRNT tower KSEA tower, Seattle Approach. Approx. 20 miles away from KSEA. At this distance with this antenna, I can receive A/C on the ground, and the tower. Keep in mind that VHF is line of site - so the receiver must be able to 'see' the transmitter - that is the physics of it. If you are on the field, you should have no problem with a 'duck' antenna. I believe the built in whip is for the broadcast section of the device. I have no comments on the broadcast radio capabilities as they are not of interest to me. In short, I am very satisfied with this unit, and Sporty's delivery times are excellent.

    Pros

    Simple, easy to use design.

    Cons

Extremely low range. (had to purchase additional antenna)

    General Comments

I didn't expect to receive communications from an airport 8 miles away, but I was very surprised when I went to the airport and used it (on the correct frequency) and barely heard a thing. ON THE AIRPORT... Also, when on the airport, if I adjusted the squelch to get rid of the extreme amount of static that the scanner had ALL THE TIME, I could no longer hear the comms. However, I did find a way to get this thing to work. I purchased a 40 inch VHF antenna from Radio Shack (only $17) and now I can hear comms fine at up to 10 miles from the field. I still believe the product should work out-of-the-box though, when I am standing on an airfield.

    Great Product
    Pros

Easy to use once your familiar with the device.

    Cons

    Programming instructions hard to follow.

    General Comments

Was difficult to program the freq into memory at first. I could not just key them in, I had to use the up/down keys to get the freq and then add to memory. 5 memory spaces too short need more.

    Pros

Having the remote antenna connection is a big plus. Buyers need to remember that VHF signals are essentially line-of-sight, so if you expect to receive distant signals of aircraft or controllers, you may want to use an external antenna. If you are near an airport or transmit antennas, the VHF receiver works great with the supplied attached antenna.
