Buyers need to remember that VHF signals are essentially line-of-sight, so if you expect to receive distant signals of aircraft or controllers, you may want to use an external antenna. If you are near an airport or transmit antennas, the VHF receiver works great with the supplied attached antenna. | works close to source Consnot much range General CommentsProduct seems well constructed am/fm worked well. My issue was I could not get satisfactory reception of air band frequencies. Probably too far from source. I live approx 7 miles from local airport but located under Bradford 5 approach to O'hare. Some reception but difficult to hear. The closer I moved to airport (my office in town) the better the reception. I think it probably works well if you are using it closer to the source than I. We have regional airports within 50 miles north and south of us, no luck with approach on these either. |

General CommentsFirst impression taking it out of the box was how light it was. For me, this meant poor/cheap quality components. I already had a bad feeling. My hangar is just below an active control tower and I could not get so much as ATIS to come in ungarbled. I read that someone had wrote "this product should not be sold" before I purchased but took the leap of faith anyway. I don't usually take the time to do these online surveys but feel very inclined to do so because of the waste of time I've endured going to UPS store, filling out all return paperwork and finally dropping additional $17.00 of my own money to return to Sportys. I also spent time at Radio Shack looking for and finally purchasing a desk mount antenna with a compatible frequency range. No luck with this. My guess is receiver output not even being close to adequate for receiving transmissions especially with after market antenna. Small antenna provided is also cheaply built and inadequate. Take my advice. Spend the extra money but don't waste your time with this one unless you want a perfectly capable AM/FM radio that looks different. For radio operation, this product is awesome. Rock and Jazz reception is great. For aviation, big negative. |

ConsThe internal speaker tended to overdrive badly and squeal, and the rubber ducky antenna was not able to reliably pick up my local traffic. I purchased an external magnetic base antenna for the top of the hanger and plugged in computer speakers to the aux output and am now very pleased with the unit.
