GATS Jar Fuel Tester (12 oz.)
This fuel tester allows you to put preflight fuel samples back into your airplane (a great alternative to tossing sampled fuel onto the ground: a practice now discouraged by the EPA). Sample and check your fuel as always. Then, as sampled fuel is returned to the tank, a unique, built-in screen separates solids and non-petroleum contaminants, so only clean, pure fuel is returned to the tank. Reversible sump actuator fits both pin and petcock actuators. Wide mouth collector helps protect hands and clothing. Resilient plastic construction makes the GATS Jar virtually indestructible with normal handling. |

The GATS jar does come with a probe to insert in the wing sump drains. The jar is large enough to catch most of the fuel from the engine fuel sump drain if properly positioned. I really like the ability to drain the sampled fuel back into the wing tanks, particularly with the price of aviation fuel these days, and being an environmental engineer, I didn't like pouring the fuel on the ramp. ConsIt is the size of a soda can, so that must be taken into account for your on board storage. General CommentsAll in all, I recommend this to all GA pilots and will recommend it to my student pilots once I get my CFII. |

Especially on the newer Cessnas (13 points) I couldn't get along with the tiny testers. |

ConsThe rubber seal seems to be made of a rubber which shrinks within a month after purchase and use of the jar (this is my 2nd GATS, and the same thing has happened twice). This is an issue with the C-172N I fly when draining the airplane's strainer. If I don't take the lid off the GATS, then the fuel sprays everywhere. Plus, if the strainer drain fuel goes on top of the GATS filter, it will get poured back into the tanks without the GATS filtering it. The solution is to take off the lid while draining the airplane's strainer. However, when I take off the lid, the rubber shrinks inward, and after that, it becomes very hard to get the jar to seal well, and it leaks every time I use it from then on. General CommentsIf the above con was fixed, this would be a truly great alternative to dumping fuel onto the ramp. I still use it, but with a few sailor's words each time. |
