    Pros

A nice little unit and easy yoke mount. Nice display and choice of modes.

    Cons

The unit is not easy to use because the Pilot's Guide handbook is wholly inadequate, making the Garmin 96 GPS difficult to imposssible for an average GA pilot to use to the full extent of its capabilities.

    General Comments

I was obliged to return the unit because I was unable to fully program the routes and waypoints due to the inadequacy of the Pilot's Guide instructional handbook. That document assumes far too much knowledge on the part of the average pilot and omits necessary steps to perform an operation. Also, the display on the screen sometimes does not match what book says to expect when a certain series of button pushes is done. I would, however, recommend this product if a suitable and useful instructional handbook can be developed and provided.

    Pros

I purchased this to use in rental aircraft and to have in the flight bag for a backup at work. The database is adequate for any kind of VFR flying, the obstacle data is very handy, as is the airspace function. The road function adds to the functionality. It is a very capable unit.

    Cons

I would like it ten times better if the buttons were at the bottom of the screen instead of on top.

    General Comments

Great value. A lot of capability in a small package.

    Pros

I am satisfied that this hand-held GPS is accurate and gets the job done.

    Cons

The user guide is one of the hardest to follow, most user-unfriendly instruction guides I have ever read.

Garmin needs to have the "pilot's guide" completely re-written, to make it user-friendly and easier to understand.

Personally, I think the unit has too many functions, and is too complicated.

Also, a carrying case is not included, which should be, to protect the unit. A case can be purchased for $12.95 plus shipping.

You should know that to work in the cockpit of our corporate jet, we have to hold the unit near the side or front windows to receive satellite signals.

A "remote antenna" can be purchased for $99.95, which sticks on the window and probably helps with signal reception. We have not purchased that accessory yet.

    General Comments

The Garmin GPSMAP 96 works well, but learning how to use it from the instruction manual is a real struggle!

    Pros

    works as advertised

    Cons

A slightly larger screen would be nice. However, Ram Mounts sells a magnifier and numerous mounts for this product.

    General Comments

Play with it at home for a while before trying to figure it out in the plane.

this unit was a little larger than I thought it would be; not huge (it fit nicely on the side of my kneeboard) but larger than I had anticipated. I decided to return this unit and make a trip over to Sporty's in order to compare units side by side; I also think that I will end up going with a color display.

    Pros

Easy to read screen. Very reliable and never losses its signal. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for value and reliability all in one package.

    Cons

Buttons on top of screen. Should of made the item with the bottons on the bottom.

    General Comments

I would purchase this unit again.

    Pros

Fantastic GPS, always able to quickly find and track. Great navigation tool. Quickly plot a VFR course from any location you may be at to any Airport and pull up Field elevation and Comm. Freq's for that field. Can't express enough how much I love this Product.

    Cons

Didn't come with a carrying case; had to buy separate but only 10 bucks.

    General Comments

If you do more day flying I would purchase this one due to cockpit glare, if you're a night guy why not spring for the fancy color 96c.

    Pros

Easy to use overall, excellent visual detail for greyscale and adjustable navigation aids to set your screen up for your own personal preferrence!

    Cons

None so far. I would imagine the 96C might be slightly easier to read during night flight.

    General Comments

I bought the Garmin 96 for portable use in rented aircraft. I opted not to buy the color display model because of previous experience with other Garmin greyscale models. The 96 visual display is MUCH sharper than the one I've had for five years (Garmin 72). If you have good vision and are price-point concious, the 96 is an excellent buy, coming with all the accessories you'll need right out of the box. I'm extremely happy with my purchase and would absolutely recommend this product to others.
