I found it destroyed the black top, by melting the binding

We apologize. After contacting the manufacturer, they informed us that a small plumbers/propane torch should be used, or even a heat gun. An over-sized torch of around 5,000 or greater BTU's is not recommended. Also, some slight discoloration may occur when melting the Crack Filler, but will not affect the binding power of the asphalt. Pros
A rubber compound seals up cracks in the driveway better than slopping on driveway sealer from one of the 5 gallon cans.
Cons
It is difficult to use. I had to cut it into multiple small pieces to get it to fit into smaller cracks. It doesn't melt very easily either. When it melts it tends to spread out over the surface rather than into the crack. Then when it cools down it seems to retract into the crack, requiring another small piece and melting to get it to fill in the gap.
I did use a long strip to fill the gap between the driveway and the concrete garage. The melted rubber didn't want to stick to the concrete, and it also flowed into the crack requiring multiple treatments to get it level. Also, the blow torch heating the concrete caused some water inside the concrete to vaporize and it snapped and spit little chips of concrete at me. I recommend wearing safety glasses when using this product.
