I ordered two screen protectors, one for my Garmin GPS and the other I trimmed down to cover the screen of my digital SLR camera screen. It was easy to work with a pair of scissors and I would rather srcatch the protector and replace it than scratch the screen. It's a no brainer on which is cheaper or easier to replace.

Easy to install once you follow the instructions. You get a plastic squeegee in the kit, to remove any bubbles when you apply the film to the screen, it works great. The film also removes easily from the screen when needed, without leaving any residue, and can be re-applied again and again, once you take care not to touch the contact side.
Costs too much, unless it's some exotic material. I have only made one trip with my 496 since I installed the protective film, so I do not have a sense of its durability or reliability.

The screen protector was not used on a GPS. Instead it was cut to size and applied to an attitude indicator. It solved the glare problem that made practice IFR nearly impossible.

Product OK, I have to see how it goes with the time. It looks like the GPS image is a tad less crispy but definitely less glare. It protects the $1300 device screen, that's the point.
Cons
Not easy to glue it right on the display, needs attention. Maybe it is a bit smaller than the 296 screen, I don't know if on purpose or not.
