On August 1, 1943, a group of B-24 Liberator bombers departed from dusty airstrips in the Libyan Desert in one of the most daring and controversial low-level bombing raids of WWII. Dubbed Operation Tidal Wave, they were to fly a 2000 mile mission deep into enemy territory without fighter escort and bomb a heavily defended target, the Ploesti oil fields in Romania. Disaster plagued the operation from the outset, and a navigational error would result in some of the B-24s making bombing runs through heavy smoke over targets that had already been attacked; they were caught in the bursts of delayed action bombs that had been dropped previously and air defenses were on full alert. Although overall damage to the target was heavy, the cost was high: of 177 B-24s and 1,726 men on the mission, 54 B-24s and 660 men were lost. B&W and color, approx. 45 min.
