Maj. General Robert White is a highly decorated former military aircraft test pilot and USAF commander who broke a number of records as the primary pilot of the North American X-15 experimental aircraft during the 1960s. He unofficially set a new air speed record when he flew the X-15 at a speed of 2,275 mph in February, 1961, and was the first person to fly an aircraft at Mach 4 and then Mach 5 over the next eight months. On 9 November 1961, White flew the X-15 at 4,093 mph, making him the first pilot to fly a winged craft at six times the speed of sound (Mach 6). On 17 July 1962, Major White flew the X-15 to an altitude of nearly 60 miles making him the first “winged astronaut” and one of few who have flown into space without a conventional spacecraft. For this, he was awarded the Collier Trophy by President Kennedy. This 13” x 16” framed photo of Maj. White flying the X-15 has been personally autographed by him and is matted in a quality wooden frame. It includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
