On 18 April 1942, Lt. Col. Richard E. Cole (then 2nd Lieutenant) flew from the deck of the aircraft carrier Hornet on what would be one of the most daring raids on the empire of Japan during WWII. He was the co-pilot of the B-25B Mitchell bomber piloted by Lt. Col. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle, the mission leader. His aircraft was one of sixteen bombers with a mission to bomb Tokyo and other key targets. This attack, America’s first retaliatory strike after Pearl Harbor, would ultimately lead to the turning point of the war in the Pacific by provoking the Japanese counter-attack and subsequent defeat at the Battle of Midway in June of that same year. This 13” x 16” framed photo of a B-25 Mitchell about to depart the U.S.S. Hornet has been personally signed by Richard E. Cole and has been matted in a handsome wooden frame along with an actual piece of B-25 metal recovered from a restoration project. Includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
