Walter Stewart Limited Edition Framed Signature Print
Product description:
Pilot of “Utah Man” in the Ploesti Raid
Walter T. Stewart flew 32 combat missions as a B-24 Liberator pilot in WWII. The most historic was Operation Tidal Wave, the daring low-level bombing raid of the oil refineries in Ploesti, Romania. Five groups of Liberators departed from Benghazi, Libya for the 2,000-mile round trip to their well-defended target which was supplying nearly one third of the oil for the German war machine. Broken formations resulted in bombers from the different groups attacking from all quadrants, but the bravery of the airmen salvaged the operation and it became a costly U.S. victory: of the 178 aircraft on the raid, 54 were lost and about a third of 1,726 men were either killed or captured. Col. Stewart's B-24 named Utah Man came home with 365 holes in it after flying for 14 hours. Five airmen were awarded the Medal of Honor, three posthumously, the most ever awarded by the USAAF for a single mission. This 8”x 10” photo of The Ploesti Raid has been personally signed by Col. Stewart and has been matted in a handsome wooden frame. Includes a Certificate of Authenticity. Measures 13” x 16”.
