The Hughes H-1 Racer was developed by Howard Hughes to be the fastest plane in the world. The H-1 was powered by a Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp Jr. radial piston engine capable of delivering 1000 hp for high-speed flight. It featured retractable landing gear, a first on land aircraft, and rivets and joints that were flush with the aircraft’s skin to reduce drag and increase speed. On September 13, 1935, Hughes achieved the goal by flying the Racer to a new world speed record of 352.322 mph. It was an aerodynamic marvel that influenced the design of high-performance aircraft, including WWII fighters, for years to come. Our replica Hughes H-1 Racer Model is handcrafted of mahogany and handpainted, has a 13” wingspan and is 13.5” in length . The base is handcarved and has a stainless steel arm.
