A great book. Lots of information to help understand why an aircraft flies and why it acts the way it acts.

    Pros

The FAA's book is beneficial since it is the "official" source of the information you'll need to know.

    Cons

Found text to be very dry, as expected from a gov't publication! I would recommend "The Student's Flight Manual" by Kershner as better reading. This book is almost too thorough on some subjects, where Kershner tells you all you need to know, plus additional tidbits with practical use.

    General Comments

Good book to have on the shelf as a reference, but not so great if studying is supposed to be enjoyable...which I think it should be if it's a subject that interests you!

    Pros

This is the 2008 version of the PHAK, not available from the FAA printers yet. I was going to print out the PDF available from the FAA's website, but it costs less to get it from Sporty's. It's full color and printed well, and there's no substitute for having the book in front of you. I wish I had bought this when I first started learning to fly.

It covers almost everything about everything. Lots of stuff you don't need for a private pilot license, but lots of info that Cleared for Landing didn't include that was on the test. I'd recommend this for anyone learning to fly.

    Pros

Fantastic book for me as a newbie to avaition. Covers much more than I could have imagined. Very helpful for understanding the aircraft and all aspects of flying

    Cons

Sometimes concepts are hard to follow (ie Bernoulli's principle). I am a college grad w/a science degree so I've had this in physics, but I didn't follow the write up very well in the book (could be I've not seen it in 25 years too). Some charts are difficult to understand.

    General Comments

All in all I would recommend this book to anyone interested in flying. This book with my instructors insight has been a fantastic learning tool.
