Airplane Flying Handbook
The FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook (previously called Flight Training Handbook) has been required reading for all pilots for more than 30 years! This book introduces the basic pilot skills and knowledge essential for piloting airplanes. It benefits student pilots just beginning their aviation endeavors, as well as those pilots wishing to improve their flying proficiency and aeronautical knowledge, pilots preparing for additional certificates or ratings, and flight instructors engaged in the instruction of both students and licensed pilots.

This new Edition features full-color illustrations, and expands all technical subject areas from the previous 1999 edition. In addition to updating the existing material, it also incorporates new areas of safety concerns and technical information not previously covered, such as runway incursion avoidance, use of checklists, positive transfer of controls when 2 pilots are flying together, and transitioning to turboprop and jet-powered airplanes.

This handbook introduces the future pilot to the realm of flight and provides information and guidance in the performance of procedures and maneuvers required for pilot certification. It contains chapters dedicated to the introduction to flight training, ground operations, basic flight maneuvers, slow flight, stalls, and spins, takeoff and departure climbs, ground reference maneuvers, airport traffic patterns, approaches and landings, performance maneuvers, night operations, transition to complex airplanes, transition to multiengine airplanes, transition to tailwheel airplanes, transition to turboprop powered airplanes, transition to jet powered airplanes, and emergency procedures.

This book is the official FAA source for learning to fly and many test questions for the FAA Knowledge Exams for pilots come from this reference. Illustrated throughout with full-color graphics and photography, and includes an index.

Soft cover, indexed, full-color illustrations, 8 3/8" x 10 7/8" format, 280 pages.

(ASA part #8083-3B)

Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
This FAA handbook has been required reading for pilots for more than 25 years. Written for the applicant preparing for the Private, Commercial, or Flight Instructor Certificates, it is also valuable to flight instructors as a teaching aid. Providing basic knowledge essential for all pilots—from beginning student pilots to those pursuing more advanced pilot certificates—this book introduces pilots to the broad spectrum of knowledge that will be needed as they progress through pilot training. Studying this book, pilots gain the required knowledge to earn a certificate, and can understand the theory associated with flying an airplane. It is a key reference tool to all the information necessary for operating an aircraft.

Subjects covered include principles of flight, aircraft and engine structure and systems, weight/balance and performance calculations, charts and navigation, weather theory, weather reports, forecasts, flight manuals and other documents, use of computers, and aeromedical factors and decision making.

This revision now features new, full-color illustrations. It also includes a newly-updated and revised section on aerodynamics that was formerly contained in a previous FAA publication (Chapter 17 of the FAA's old AC61-21A, Flight Training Handbook). Now reflecting all the latest aviation industry procedures, techniques and regulations, this handbook is the official reference source for questions appearing on the FAA Knowledge Exams. (Formerly published as Advisory Circular 61-23C.) (ASA part #8083-25B)

Excellent reference material
I had a copy of this book back in the late 60's when I first started flying. It was excellent information then, and still is today. Now, after a 31 year career of flying DC-8's, B-747's, and MD-11's, I have purchased copies for two of my grandsons and two of my nephews. I'm looking forward to sharing all this flight information with them.

A GREAT PACKAGE
Tremendous value for the money. You can get these as a .pdf from the FAA, but I like being able to highlight things and write notes on some of the pages. You can't do that easily with a .pdf.

These texts, although free for download from the FAA website, are excellent references as preparation for both the Private Pilot exam, the Instrument Rating exam, and as general resources for refreshing one's knowledge.

Necessary for a Pilot's library
It is very important to review everything you think you know. I find holding a book in my hand is more useful that downloading it off the internet.
