10 reasons the Bose A20 is the #1 headset in aviation

  1. ANR pioneers. Bose was the first company to introduce active noise reduction headsets (over 20 years ago) and they’ve been innovating ever since. The A20 offers 30% greater noise reduction than conventional aviation headsets.
  2. A focus on comfort. A quiet headset isn’t enough these days – it has to be comfortable too. The A20 has numerous features that make it the most comfortable headset we’ve worn, including sheepskin cushions and a unique torsion spring that reduces clamping force.
  3. Famous Bose audio. Pilots rave about the Bose's Active EQ, which delivers crystal clear audio and rich sound when listening to music.
  4. Bluetooth phone interface. It’s easy to call Flight Service or update family members with this wireless connection that makes use of the A20’s noise cancellation (not available on this model).
  5. Bluetooth audio interface. Wirelessly connect your Bluetooth-enabled device to the Bose A20 to listen to music, and notifications from apps. Also available is the option to plug in your device with an aux input cord (not available on this model).
  6. Smart audio muting. A handy switch on the A20 control box allows you to choose what auxiliary audio you hear, including automatic muting of aux audio when the intercom is active.
  7. Lightweight design. At just 12 oz., you’ll hardly know the A20 is there. The magnesium headband also distributes the headset’s weight evenly, for all-day comfort.
  8. TSO'd. The A20 meets or exceeds all TSO standards (FAA TSO-C139 and EASA ETSO-C139), so you can count on this headset for years of service. They are built to last.
  9. Great service. If your Bose headset ever needs service, you can expect fast and friendly service, even years after your purchase. Includes a 5-year transferable warranty.
  10. Excellent battery life. Bose’s smart shutoff helps provide at least 45 hours of use from just two AA alkaline batteries.
Microphone can be connected to either earcup for convenience. Measures 8.4"h x 6.3"w x 3.2"d. Includes: A20 Aviation Headset, in-line clothing clip, control module, 2 AA batteries, aux-in cable adapter, carrying case.

John ZimmermanStaff PIREP

"The Bose A20 is popular for a reason - it strikes a good balance between comfort, quiet and clarity. It's comfortable enough to wear all day and it's quiet enough for almost any type of airplane. It may not be the cheapest headset, but you get what you pay for with Bose."

Plus: Most comfortable headset I've worn

Plus: Excellent ANR, with no hissing sound

Plus: Great battery life

Minus: Top-end price requires a big upfront investment

Which cable do I need?

Most headsets come in multiple cable configurations. Choosing the right one is pretty easy, it just depends on what type of aircraft you fly:

  • Battery powered, twin plugs - this is by far the most common style, with separate microphone and headphone plugs (so-called PJ plugs). Almost every airplane ever built has these two plugs in the panel, so these headsets are universal. The only downside is that, for ANR headsets, you will need to use AA batteries to power the headset.
  • Aircraft powered, 6-pin plug - the second most popular style, sometimes called the "LEMO plug," requires no batteries since it is powered by the panel. This is convenient, but it does require the 6-pin plug to be installed in the panel. While many newer airplanes come with this option, most older airplanes do not. For these applications, you'll need to have your avionics shop wire in the plug - not a big job, but not something pilots can do on their own.
  • Helicopter plug  - helicopters use a single, shorter plug (that is not compatible with airplanes). This is not like the 6-pin plug above, however, since an ANR helicopter headset will still need AA batteries. The only confusing part is that some helicopters also have a 6-pin (or LEMO) plug. In these helicopters, there are two different single plug connections.
  • Airbus XLR plug - less common is a single 5-pin connector that is made for Airbus jets.

Headset cable options

When in doubt, we recommend buying the battery powered, twin plug model. This is the most universal option, and will work in almost any airplane. If you have a 6-pin plug in your airplane or you plan to install one, the aircraft powered model is a nice option.

First Bose Headset
Have had my new headset for a short time but i am thrilled with it! Should have had an ANR headset years ago and Bose came highly recommended. It is expensive but quality in aviation usually is and worth the money if you can swing it.

Not as comfortable as Lightspeed Zulu
My husband and I agree the Lightspeed Zulu is a more comfortable headset. And for the money, it isn't worth the extra cost for a Bose.
It is much more clamping.
Also, the wool pad on the top is itchy and not very padded.

Bose 6 pin
Bought twin plug some years ago and they have been brilliant.
Upgraded my aircraft that takes both twin and six pin. I have decided to use the six pin outlets and didn't hesitate to buy Bose.

Chose this one after comparing, glad I did
I tried a comparable Lightspeed and this Bose. I flew with both and the Lightspeed did not fit my head as well, no matter how I tried to adjust it. I would still get in some outside noise. I love that Sporty's allows us to try and return. I chose the Bose and am very happy now after over a year of use. I am a woman and so probably have a smaller head size. Maybe that was the issue with the Lightspeed. As to the bluetooth, I decided I wanted the simpler model as I am not on my phone much in the plane (generally just to pick up a clearance). It is very easy to use the cord to plug into my iphone and into the headset. I hear my phone very clearly. I highly recommend this headset for performance and comfort.

Great Headset So Far
This review is based on use in a Boeing 717. I have taken this headset on one four day trip and really like it so far. I almost purchased this back when I was on the 757/767 but kept waffling on spending a grand on a headset. Previously I was using a Telex 5x5 pro. I will start by saying the 717 cockpit is not particularly loud by airliner standards. Unlike most GA planes the bulk of the noise is from avionics and A/C air along with window leaks, followed by slipstream noise. After my Telex headset broke and I found it was flat rate $150 to fix it I was pushed toward the Bose. I wasn't going to spend that on a 20 year old headset repair. I figured that if I had to spend $300-400 on a new standard headset this was the time to fork over the premium for a Bose. My first experience has been very positive. The noise reduction is excellent. I usually leave one ear up off until we are on climbout and then cover both ears and turn on the ANR. What a difference it makes. I will periodically pull off an earcup in cruise just to compare and only then do I realize how loud it is without the noise reduction in the cockpit even at cruise altitude. As far as the comfort of the headset. I found the earcups very comfortable with no hot spots on legs of 2 1/2 hours. The headband fit great and adjusted easily. The boom mike was easily adjustable and did not pick up any detectable ambient noise. The cord was fine but I do wish the cord between the twin plugs and the control unit/battery pack was a little longer so it could be more easily fastened to a clip or something on the bulkhead. The cord does come with two nice clips that can be slid along its length and fastened to clips or shade rails in the cockpit. I can't yet speak to battery life. So far I have flown six legs of about an average two hours each and the batteries are still good. The provided soft case is a little bulky. I wish they provided one that was heavier duty (thicker exterior walls) yet more compact. It takes up a lot of room in my backpack. To summarize: outstanding noise reduction, very comfortable, obviously pricey but this is a capitalist society and if someone could make a better one and sell it for less they would, but if they have I have not seen or heard of it. One last thought, every few months Bose runs a promo where you get a Bluetooth speaker free with an A20 purchased through them or any authorized dealer (Sporty's). So, if you're hesitant and need to be thrown some kind of bone to push you over the edge to purchase then hold out for that and you can at least feel you got some bennie for throwing that much cash at a headset. I did but I also now wish I had bought this headset a long time ago.

Bose being Bose
What more do you need to say. Bose audio products are the Rolls Royce of headphones. I've used Bose headphones for years when I travelled around the world on business to listen to music and to quiet the noise on long flights. So Bose was an obvious choice for a new pilot when it came to getting my first aviation headset. They are light, they are comfortable, and they kill the sound in the cockpit beyond belief. At a thousand bucks they are considerably more expensive than the competition but so are Rolls Royces. But just like those RR's these babies will be working and shining for years.

Gold standard
So comfortable, don't notice them even after a couple of hours. I live in a busy airspace and I need to hear the ATC and I don't want to have to crank up the volume. My instructor, flying for 28 years, is half deaf. I don't want to end up like him. What is your hearing worth? This much, at least.
