Do I Need an External iPad GPS?

The 3G model of the iPad, in addition to its built-in cellular antenna, also includes an internal GPS. The GPS is completely separate from the 3G data service, so you don’t even have to have an active data plan for the GPS to work. You could buy the 3G model purely for the GPS and never activate the data plan, saving yourself some money. But the on-board iPad GPS was made for ground use, and it’s not very reliable in the air. It has a tendency to drop offline, especially when switching between apps. For this reason, most iPad pilots—even those with a 3G iPad—opt for an external GPS. They are extremely accurate (WAAS-enabled) and very reliable. They also offer free apps that allow you to monitor the GPS’s performance.

"...we recommend using an external GPS with the iPad if you want reliable GPS data."

"...it performed flawlessly on our test flight home from Oshkosh."

Pros:
Good price, easy to install, haven't had it in much turbulence yet, but it seems to ride well on the glare shield without moving around. I punched a hole in the rubber mount with a leather punch and wired it to the cigar charger, and leave it in the plane all the time.
Cons:
An improvement would be for it to be turned on when the iPad turned on, or if it could be turned on through Foreflight or the iPad without having to reach up on the glare shield which necessitates removing my harness in my plane.

Good product.

Pros:
So sensitive, I can achieve a GPS fix indoors! I used fore flight to record my drive to the airport, and it was so sensitive, that I could tell where I changed lanes! I'm able to leave the device in my headset bag during the flight. Truly turn it on and forget about it!
Cons:
Sometimes my iPad doesn't connect with the Bluetooth, but recycling the Bluetooth antenna on my iPad fixes that every time.

Cons:
Poor reception.

Very poor reception both in and out of aircraft,B757. It takes forever if never to find itself. I travel worldwide and constantly change locations with a lot of time between use. I will set this in the hotel window for an hour and it will never sink up or get reception. My Garmin handheld in the same location has no problem at all and sinks up in less than a minute.

Pros:
The DUAL XGOS150A paired with my iPad in seconds and Foreflight works perfectly with it. The antenna's rubber base adheres to the glare shield and is so small that it is almost invisible from the pilot's seat. I have not used it long enough to know about maximum battery life but 2, two hour flights without a re-charge was without issue. The online App is great to monitor Satellite connectivity and battery life.

I would recommend this antennae to any iPad user of Fore-Flight or other applicable flight applications.
