When I was training for my first pilot's license the electronic E6B saved me time flight planning. But most importantly, it made my calculations on the written test faster and easier. I wouldn't want to take an exam without one.

I bought this hoping to speed up calculations and achieve greater accuracy....and it doesn't disappoint. For the few negative reviewers that are complaining of scratched screens, hard to read numbers, or glaring issues, I don't experience this at all. For the scratches, the cover doesn't even come into contact with the screen...so that isn't the reasoning for a scratched screen. For the size of the numbers, they are PLENTY big and MUCH easier to read than some tiny lines on an E6B (oh, and you don't have to interpret anything either!) For glaring, that's what the back-light feature is for, along with viewing in the dark. I do wish that it had back-lit buttons though, as that would be the icing on the cake. Maybe the next model?

As for my experience using it: Entering the required numbers is super easy and the calculations are exact. There is a bit of a learning curve to using it though, as this thing does a LOT of different calculations and you will need to learn all the abbreviations and button combinations. It's no big deal though, and is learned fairly quickly. I'm new to flying, and if I can learn to use this thing, any experienced pilot should have ZERO problems. It's an amazing device, and I'm looking forward to many, many years of good use. Thanks Sporty's.

Nothing easier

Recommended

I got this to use on the FAA exam and so far it works great. Once you get used to the labels for the different functions it is very easy to use. I have no doubt that the parts of the exam that require the Use of an E6B will present no challenge.

Steeper learning curve than expected

Recommended

It takes a while to learn but after that it's nearly perfect. I've noticed that the glare off the display can be bad.

Well, it works and does its job well

Recommended

It works. It calculates pretty much anything and everything that you would need to do for the Private and Instrument FAA exams (might be useful for other exams, but this is my experience thus far). Practice with it, so you become proficient before you take your exam. You don't want to choke because you can't figure out how to use your calculator! Backlight is great. Timer is pretty much useless. All the calculations work and will give you accurate results, however figuring this thing out is pretty time consuming. I am very well versed in pretty much anything tech and it took me a while to figure out the functions I needed.

Personally, I had to buy this computer twice because after my Private I thought there was no looking back! However, I apparently love the abuse of flight traning so I went back for more (instrument) and needed this little guy again.

Foreflight does pretty much everything I need in real life however you can't bring your cell phone/ipad into the exam room with you! In the real world, you will be using alternate tools for flight planning. Chances are after your training this will go back in your bag until you decide to take another exam.

It may prove useful as a backup computer if everything else you have is dead on batteries, but you must keep proficient in its usage. All in all is sure as heck beats a manual calculator - still have nightmares about those stupid things.

Have fun, be safe and keep learning.

Great tool, build quality is lacking

Recommended

Took my written with this E6B and it performed wonderfully. The only knock that I give it are with its rubber feet. I've lost two already just taking it in and out of my bag. Sporty's has been kind enough to send me replacements but those too fall off. Maybe for the next update add a long strip across the top or bottom instead of individual feet.

Can't read

Not Recommended

I have the older version and it's very hard to read, so I bought this model thinking the display would better, but it's not. The letters and numbers are small and hard to read, nothing like it looks like on here.

Intuitive

Recommended

I echol all the comments about the difficulty in reading from either glare or from size of font and lack of contrast. It takes a little doing to figure out the qwirky menu system but it becomes intuitive quickly.

I didn't care for it.

I thought it was easier to just use my old faithful sliding, rotating flight computer than the hand held with the drop down menu so I returned it after a couple of days.

Same E6B we have come to know and love!

Recommended

The electronic flight computer is a must in aviation if you want flight calculations on the fly without having to squint or remember how to use a slide rule. I always have my mechanical E6B as a standby but my electronic E6B has been my go to for 26 years. Unfortunately my original was stolen and I purchased a new one and it's still an awesome tool in my flight bag.

Hi, just wondering what WCA stands for on the display. I couldn't find it in the instruction manual. What does it stand for, or where can I find it? Thanks for your help.
dylanweav3 on Jul 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: WCA stands for wind correction angle. It will be a positive or negative number, add or subtract this number from the magnetic course to get your magnetic heading. After that, add or subtract the magnetic deviation to get the course heading that you should steer on your compass.
Can you use this one for FAA exams?
Loren A on Oct 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I believe you can as this is an electronic version of the E6B computer (whiz wheel). I have'tn actually tried to do so myself, so I will add that caveat.
Does this calculator do Cosine? The ATP has questions on Cosine PLUS everything else here.
A shopper on Feb 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't have it anymore but it is a flight calculator not a scientific calculator. I may be wrong but I don't remember it having those types of functions.
