Made for the cockpit

Modern cockpits are filled with portable avionics, and keeping these portable devices charged is essential for safe operations. iPads, smartphones, tablets, GPS units, ADS-B receivers, SiriusXM Weather receivers… all need power to do their job.

Now you can keep your devices fully charged with the Flight Gear Dual USB Charger. It was designed by pilots for the unique needs of the modern general aviation cockpit.

3 essential features for pilots:

  • Dual 2.4 amp charging ports. Two USB ports provide up to 4.8 amps (2.4 amps each), giving plenty of power to an iPad and a Stratus at the same time - no more searching for which port is 1 amp and which is 2 amps!
  • 12 or 24 volt aircraft. Universal design works in aircraft with a range of electrical systems. Easily move it from airplane to airplane without worrying about compatibility.
  • Integrated LED screen. Besides charging your devices, an integrated LED screen displays the voltage of the cigarette lighter socket it is plugged into. When you plug a USB device into it, the screen changes to show the amount of amps your device is drawing. This handy feature makes it easy to see in a glance how many amps your device is pulling. The LED screen will blink if low voltage is detected (below 12 volts or between 18 to 24 volts).
The smart power management circuit design with over current and over-charge protection keeps your devices safe while providing optimal changing capabilities.

Specifications:

  • DC input: 12-24V
  • DC output: 5V/4.8A (Max)
  • Measurements: 3” x 1.7” x 1.7”

The design and function are great. The numbers are not readable in sunlight. Display needs to be in a amber or more readable color.

Worthless
I purchased 2 of these and neither one will can supply enough power to charge my iPad while I am using it. Works slowly if I am not using my iPad. Even when my iPad is at 34% charge it only shows .6 amp charge, not the 2.4 amps it advertises. My iPad went dead on a 2 hour flight while plugged into this and it was showing charging. I switched to my older 2 amp charger and it worked just fine.

Great device for the price! No other device offered voltage display, which is critical when battery is discharged or low. We could have gotten a TSOdevice for $300+ dollars but why? Only improvement is a better way to friction lock in place.

Aviation USB adapter/charger
Good product with digital amp readout. I wish the display would be in red, not blue. The dark blue digits are way too hard to read quickly.

Big improvement over previous unit
I have a couple of the earlier USB chargers from Sportys. They could not keep up with the power drain on my iPad mini 4 and Foreflight, and one of them generates a bit of RF noise on the radios. I bought 4 of these new ones. The performance is super, and the iP{ad's charge increases even while it is in use. No radio noise, either. Can't really speak to durability because it the devices are too new, but construction is solid!

Does the job as advertised. Easy to use with any USB device. The only problem I noticed is that the blue display is difficult to read in any direct lighting conditions. Needs to be corrected. Otherwise very useful.

If the DC input is listed as 12v to 24v, and since airplanes with a 24v battery use 28v internally, won't such an airplane exceed the specs of the device? [On July 3 I had smoke in the cockpit during flight when another brand USB charger started overheating and melting. Proper specs and high quality are necessary in the cockpit environment.]
A shopper on Jul 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This device is designed to work with both 24V and 12 V aircraft system.
Will this unit cause noise on my radios?
HARLEY M on Jun 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It should not cause noise on the radios.
Has anyone tested this with an IPAD running Foreflight on long flights? My other 2A chargers don't keep up.
A shopper on Jul 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have used this device many times now with my iPad Air running the Garmin Pilot app in a Skylane. It performs as specified delivering 2.4 amps from each output which will keep both devices connected fully charged indefinitely. One possible negative is that on a 12vdc source it will beep continuously. BTW, I had previously used 3 different Dual 2.4 USB Cigarette Lighter Chargers #6588A. Each of them only delivered 1.0 amps per output and therefore unable to hold a charge on a single iPad which would eventual die on a long flight.
Has this been tested for EMI that degrades performance of avionics, especially, but not limited to, GPS navigators?
Larry P on Jul 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I fly a 1956 Cessna 180 VFR only. I fly with an iPad with a Bad Elf GPS. I have not noticed any changes with the Bad Elf or my Garmin 396 GPS. I have not noticed any change to VHF radio static either. I love this charger!
Does this unit have an internal fuse? if so, what is the amp rating?
Jeff D on Jul 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This charger does not have a fuse, but uses a built in "smart circuit" design that protects from overcharging and aslo over current.
Today with 26.3 V connected, external power, to my 24 V airplane, all was well until I connected my iPad. Shortly after I got a red blinking warning along with constant beeping. The iPad was drawing about 2 amps, same as it did in my 12-14V truck with no warning. My airplane system usually runs close to 28V in flight. So, 26.3V... Too much or too little?
Rich C on Aug 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: 26.3 volts would be too low to charge a "24V" battery. If you are not experiencing progressive battery discharge with your airplane, most likely you have a voltage drop with the circuits between the battery and the phone charger.
First make sure cigarette-lighter socket is clean, and the phone charger is snug when plugged-in. Next possible problem would be the connection behind the cig-socket, then the circuit breaker, followed by the master switch.
Similar things to check with the car, (except the master and circuit breaker).
Mine works without beeping in my car, but beeps in my brothers' van during engine start.
In a typical rental plane, mine beeps when cutting the alternator breaker when checking the charging system during runup.
Note- try cleaning the cig-sockets with a small wire-brush, BUT, make sure master is OFF! - Otherwise you'll short-out the lighter circuit, and with the car, you should disconnect one of the battery terminals...
What voltage will it work with?
A shopper on Sep 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This unit will work with both 12 and 24 volt systems.
Is this made in the U.S.?
E D on Aug 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This item is made in China.
I have one of these, and it only shows 1 amp draw for my ipad mini 2 and my Iphone 6+. I think that they should each be drawing 2+ amps. Do I have a defective unit?
gary b on Aug 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The iPad and iPhone will only draw 2+ amps when the battery is really low. If the battery for the iPad and iPhone is almost completely charge it will only draw the 1 amp.
One of the reviewers mentioned it is not able to charge the iPad, but only maintain the charge. Can someone confirm or provide some more details? Thank you.
A shopper on Jul 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This device is able to charge the iPad.
Can I use this in my car as well?
A shopper on Jul 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can be used in a car.
Will this work in my car?
John M on Jul 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will work in your car.
What is the wattage output?
Tom B on Jun 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It puts out 2.4 amps on both ports.
The charger for a garmin 696 will work. My car charger for my iPhone won't. Will this work?
Keith B on Jun 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: What are you trying to charge?
I need to know if the reach on the end of the device will reach 1.5" into the socket. If it is shorter than that it will not contact the power at the bottom of the socket?
William C on Jun 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will reach 1.5" into the socket.
