The Freedom to choose SiriusXM Weather or ADS-B Weather

The touch-screen 796 replaces stacks of paper charts, and offers unmatched situational awareness, including Garmin’s exclusive 3D Vision display. It’s a reliable everyday navigator, and the best backup GPS we’ve ever seen. Add the GXM 42 antenna to receive premium SiriusXM weather in flight, from high resolution radar to cloud tops and lightning. Or choose the GDL 39 ADS-B receiver to receive subscription-free weather. For the ultimate combination, add the GDL 39 3D and the 796 will display full AHRS information--even pitch and roll.

  • 3D Vision. A Garmin exclusive, this incredible view is similar to a glass cockpit’s synthetic vision display, depicting your airplane as it flies over realistic terrain features. You’ll see groundspeed and GPS altitude on vertical tapes, plus rate of turn and track. Terrain is color-coded based on your altitude, and airport runways are pictured just like the real world. Add a GDL 39 3D ADS-B receiver to unlock full AHRS data, including pitch and roll.
  • Complete digital charts. The 796 is a complete replacement for paper charts, with sectionals, IFR Hi/Lo En Route Charts and IFR Approach Charts. These “smart charts” are geo-referenced, so you can see your airplane move across the chart, and you can tap on chart features for more information. Switching between charts takes just the tap of a button.
  • Responsive touch-screen. The 796’s capacitive touch-screen is Garmin’s best yet, responsive and fast when zooming in or panning charts. It also includes iPhone-like pinch zooming and a dedicated “back” button for quick navigation.
  • Bright, sunlight-readable 7” screen. Garmin’s brightest screen yet combines with specially coated glass to reduce glare and improve sunlight readability. In our direct sunlight tests, we found the 796 to be superior to any other GPS or tablet.
  • Document manager. Load operations manuals, FARs and other documents on the 796 with its built-in document viewer. It’s perfect for using as a full EFB.
  • Scratchpad app. For going completely paper-free, the 796 includes a scratchpad that allows you to take notes or copy IFR clearances.
  • Panel view. Overlay Garmin’s famous “panel page” on the moving map for near-real time backup instruments.
  • Terrain view and alerts. Color-coded top-down and side views show nearby terrain and obstacles, and provide pop-up alerts for based on your altitude.
  • AOPA Airport Directory. The most complete collection of airport information, including FBOs, hotels, restaurants, rental cars and more.
  • Taxiway diagrams. Geo-referenced diagrams for over 700 airports, including taxiway labels, runway incursion hot spots and hold short lines.

Measures 5”w x 8”h x 1 1/2”d. Includes leather carrying case, cleaning cloth, cigarette lighter adapter cable, RAM yoke mount, desktop dock with 110v plug, Li-Ion battery, Garmin quick reference guide, GPS antenna with suction cup mount, and USB to mini USB cable.

Optional GXM weather receiver (sold separately) provides satellite weather capabilities to the Garmin 796, and works at any altitude in the US (even the ground). A subscription is required and they start at approximately $35.00 per month. Optional GDL 39 provides subscription-free ADS-B weather, using the FAA's network of ground stations; works in US only.

Great except there are no video programs on How to Use it and also the $500 annual renewal fee was a shock for a single person

Lower the price of your updates to $100.00 annually

The annual subscriptions are optional as a portable device is not approved for IFR. Some people choose to do all of the updates. Most pilots pick and choose updates as needed (mountains seldom move, but cell phone towers pop up often).

Overall great ease of use

I know that people will ask why get this when I can just use my iPad? The 796 was designed specifically for flying and it shows. Much easier to navigate around than Foreflight or Garmin Pilot. Screen is easier to see than an iPad screen. I have wired to sync flight plans with my CNX 480, so it's always current. Only negative is that navdata updates are more expensive for the 796 than they are for any of the iPad programs.

Product very well crafted, performant and complete.
Touch screen with different menus are logical and efficient
Display resolution a little bit obsolete but good contrast, colors and works fine even in sunlight.
A very good thing for international flight: world coverage option.
The use in the airplane as a GPS is excellent and very useful.
But accessories are huge and heavy(An extra large bag is necessary to carry all those big and heavy accessories (esp. 110V AC charger device) versus GNS 496. Not very convenient when travelling by airline to pickup an airplane somewhere....
A BIG MISTAKE from Garmin: No more option in the settings to change language (e.i. French) versus GNS 496 offered that option

Those are the reasons I rate 1 star only about the ease to use...

About the Garmin 796, can I use my XM weather antenna from my Garmin 496 with it? I want to leave the 796 in my panel but take the XM 496 antenna home and use it on our Garmin 496 at home for weather. I only want to pay for one XM weather subscription and if I have to pay for 2 subscriptions I won't be buying the 796 then.

BEST ANSWER: Can't use for both, different connections
Is there a way to mount a 769 to an instrument panel ?

Do I have to subscribe every year?? I thought updates are free.
A shopper on Apr 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is a chart subscription and an XM weather subscription if you choose. Both are annual subscriptions.
Can I down load my flight plan from Garmin pilot app to the 796?
dan H on Apr 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: In my case I send flight plan from GP to panel via flightstream 210. It then automatically fills down to the 796 via bluetooth. I don't think it can be done directly from GP to 796 (although it's possible the new aera 660 might be able to do that directly).
can one of these work on two GPS's? I have 2 Aera 796's without xm receivers (one for the pilot and the other for the co-pilot) and I wanted to know if I could hook one of these to two of those.
