Sporty’s says:

Garmin has a well-deserved reputation for making the best portable GPSs for pilots. Now many of these same great features are available on your iPhone, iPad and Android devices, with the introduction of the Garmin Pilot aviation app. This comprehensive program includes all digital charts, from sectionals to IFR en route charts to approach plates, plus detailed airport data. In addition, the powerful flight planning page allows you to plan, brief and file flight plans. There’s even Garmin’s famous panel page view of GPS-derived flight instruments. Everything is easy to get to, with Garmin’s cockpit-friendly menu that mirrors current Garmin portables and the GTN line of panel navigators.

App description

Garmin Pilot is a comprehensive suite of tools for the iPhone, iPad and Android, designed specifically for general aviation and corporate pilots. Flight planning, DUAT(S) filing, charts, interactive maps, weather briefing resources and navigation capabilities; it’s all included. The app’s intuitive interface mirrors those on the newest Garmin touchscreen avionics so you can go seamlessly from preflight to inflight. Plan, file, fly with Garmin Pilot.

Plan

Garmin Pilot’s powerful capabilities start with pre-flight planning, providing pilots with the most comprehensive aviation weather information to make better-informed flight decisions. Pilots can check NEXRAD radar, visible and infrared cloud imagery, METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, PIREPs, NOTAMs, winds and temperature aloft, PIREPs, TFRs and lightning data. With Garmin Pilot, data can be displayed over a VFR sectional or an IFR low or high en-route chart to visualize the weather for your route. Add text-based weather widgets and use the exclusive NavTrack feature to view weather along the planned route. Long-press any location on the map and the new Radial Menu provides easy access to navigation information, including: airports, navaids, current METARs, direct-to, airspaces, creating a waypoint and allowing for graphical editing of a flight plan.

File

With Garmin Pilot, users can easily enter a flight plan and interactively edit it on the map. Pre-loaded forms make it quick to save and reuse data for frequently flown routes. And when the flight plan is ready, Garmin Pilot makes it simple to file, amend or close the flight plan via DTC DUAT or CSC DUATS. Electronic confirmations from DUAT(S) meet FAA legal briefing requirements.

Fly

Garmin Pilot provides full en-route navigation capability on its moving map, while showing ETE, ETA, crosstrack error, distance to waypoint and current position. Pilots can also navigate with Garmin’s patented panel, a GPS-driven instrument pack with a graphical HSI directional display and indicators for groundspeed, altitude and vertical speed. After takeoff, pilots can continue to view real-time weather information by wirelessly connecting to Garmin’s GDL 39 ADS-B receiver (sold separately). For the ultimate in situational awareness, turn on the incredible synthetic vision display (premium subscription required).

Great Android Alternative
Works great but I sometimes had loading issues on start-up...the maps just took a long time to load. I have it running both on my Samsung phone and my Samsung Tablet!

Garmin Pilot app is an excellent cockpit tool you will not regret
If you are comparing aviation apps, don't blow off Garmin Pilot. It is definitely worth your thorough evaluation. I have used the app for several years now and have really come to love it. When I researched whether to buy Foreflight or Garmin, I was really conflicted. Both apps are great. Each had some features that I liked better than the competitor's, so it wasn't easy. In the end, I chose Garmin Pilot because it has the same look and feel and consistency of the Garmin GTN 650 avionics in the Cardinal I fly. The menus are similar in layout, functionality, etc. In my mind, consistency is good. The app is super easy to update the maps, chart supplements, approach plates, etc. and has virtually everything I need information wise. I did buy the GDL-39 3D ADS-B receiver with the AHRS unit and it works flawlessly. I feel much more comfortable being in the clouds with a single vacuum pump knowing I have the backup attitude indicator and HSI functions two button presses away. Some other reviewer thought it was pricey, but I will tell you that I think,, compared to the old subscriptions for paper charts, maps, approach plates, etc. I think the $149 i spend per year on Garmin Pilot is a HUGE bargain! In my opinion, considering it has virtually every map and chart resource I need (VFR & IFR) PLUS GPS, weather, E6-B features, etc., this is the best bang-for-the-buck money I spend every year in my flying. Garmin is determined to go head-to-head with Foreflight, which is good for all of us, no matter which product you end up using. Every time there is an update (which is pretty often), I am amazed at the added functions in the software. For example, Garmin recently came out with a Bluetooth-enabled data card for the GTN series avionics that lets them communicate back and forth the the Pilot App. Before I bought Pilot app, I was a little concerned that Garmin would create the app just to say they had one and let it languish while they focused on the avionics side of the business where the real money is. Boy was I wrong, and I'm certainly glad. Bottom line - do your due diligence and choose the app you like best, and you will be very happy with it. I sure am.

Pros: Very easy to use and helps my pre-flight planning get done quickly. Cons: Pricey, but you get what you pay for in expertise! Still learning to use it, but looks like it will be a blessing all around. Have used Garmin GPS products for years while sailing, so impressed w/the reliability and backing.

BEST ANSWER: Our customer support.
What equipment is needed to display XM weather on Garmin Pilot?
william M on Apr 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You need an XM Weather receiver and a Baron Mobile Link unit. The Baron Mobile Link transmits the proper data format via WIFI signal to up to four devices. I do not currently use XM Weather, but I hear it is very valuable in less dense ADS-B coverage areas.
After the subscription ends, does the app stop working or can you keep using the existing maps?
Ty Y on Aug 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I only had a three day lapse in my coverage, but I did notice that many of the map features no longer worked and all updates stopped. Basically, the app was no longer useable for safe flight. I had shopped the various apps before purchasing Garmin's Pilot Pro and found it to be the best, especially when connected to the GDL 393D. I have been very satisfied for the past year and a half. Hope this helps
GARMIN pilot Standard App iPad -Are the VFR charts for Australia downloadable?
Peter M on Oct 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The FAA would not provide charts for Australian airports. You would need a Jeppesen chart subscription. The Jeppesen chart subscription is available with Foreflight.
How long is the subscription good for?
A shopper on Mar 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The subscription is for 1 year.
do you need an Ipad with cell capabilities for it to provide a moving map GPS? Or do you need to purchase an ADS-B receiver?
richard f on Feb 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We recommend an external GPS. The iPad GPS signal can become unreliable at altitude.
