Do I Need an External iPad GPS?

The 3G model of the iPad, in addition to its built-in cellular antenna, also includes an internal GPS. The GPS is completely separate from the 3G data service, so you don’t even have to have an active data plan for the GPS to work. You could buy the 3G model purely for the GPS and never activate the data plan, saving yourself some money. But the on-board iPad GPS was made for ground use, and it’s not very reliable in the air. It has a tendency to drop offline, especially when switching between apps. For this reason, most iPad pilots—even those with a 3G iPad—opt for an external GPS. They are extremely accurate (WAAS-enabled) and very reliable. They also offer free apps that allow you to monitor the GPS’s performance.

"...we recommend using an external GPS with the iPad if you want reliable GPS data."

"...it performed flawlessly on our test flight home from Oshkosh."

Pros: This product turns the Android into a real gps. Cons: Slightly large and awkward to be packing around in different aircraft. On/Off button very stiff in the cold.

Pros: I love how simple the receiver is! The grip that comes with the product is really nice and creates a stress free cockpit. The plane I rent doesn't have some of the newer GPS so this plus foreflight gives me some of the best resources in the sky! Cons: None so far!

Pros: The unit only took 20-30 seconds to startup, pair with the iPad, and acquire the signal. Once the signal was locked I never lost my location on 4flight. Cons: The I pad will not get a fix from the device with airplane mode on and bluetooth on. I flew from KAUS-KLCH-KCLL-KGTU in a PA-28-181 and still had battery life.

Pros: As advertised. This is my backup for emergencies. I would not use for primary navigation. Very precise location. Cons: Slow to connect but stays connected once linked. The maps are VERY small on and iPod Touch and do not scale well.

Cons: Wish battery could also be recharged with household power but so far that has not been a problem. So far it has been a winner. Done everything as advertised and the battery recharges easily.

Cheap insuranve
Tough to beat for the price. I'm a renter and never know what I'll be flying when a doggy rescue mission arises. Coupled with Foreflight, this consistently gives me accuracy within 15 feet of my location. I only plan to upgrade to be able to pull weather data as I fly.

Pros: Small size, high reliability, a perfect match for a Wifi i-Pad2. It brings the geo-referencing tool graphic into the cockpit and is a perfect match with ForeFlight Pro. Better than 3G. And it stays where you put it (unless you're pulling negative Gs). Cons: Nothing serious I can think of. I'm very happy with the Dual GPS

My iPad Air does not have a internal GPS so will this still work?
Titanic on Nov 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will work. I haven't found a better place than the dash which exposes it to a lot of heat in warm months. The rubber holder is black and absorbs heat. Heat can cause it to shut off which happened to me once. I haven't tried using it without the holder yet. I do wish I had purchased the version which enables more than one device to connect because a co pilot can use it with their IPad at the same time.
Can this GPS be used on commercial aircraft since it doesn't utilize wifi?
sam92 on Jun 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I fly commercially and use this myself and I have also used it on commercial flights as a passenger. It works really well. I have found that reception varies based on your position in the plane (e.g. on a 737 near the window vs. aisle). Airlines have different policies about electronic devices and potentially can ask you to turn a device off if they are not comfortable with it.
Will this the support synthetic vision in Foreflight Pro Plus?
David R on Oct 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I do not know, but since you've asked about the XGPS150A I must tell you that for me and another friend has not been completely reliable. Often during flight it loses the satellite, right now I've been without it for about 3 weeks because it does not connect (through bluetooth) to the iPad Mini.
So it was asked below, nearly 8 months ago and there is not a clear answer. Does this provide full functionality with ForeFlight Pro Plus? Has anybody tried this and determined if it will?
A shopper on May 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Dual XGPS150A will provide Foreflight with a GPS position that works on the moving map. It also provides GPS Ground speed, GPS altitude. This GPS does not provide the backup AHRS with pitch and roll information.
If my Ipad is connected to this GPS through bluetooth, can I still pair a headset at the same time?
Christopher U on May 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The iPad is only able to bluetooth to one device at a time.
Does the Dual Electro

Does the Dual XGPS150 works with the FltPlan Go app?
Alejandro G on Feb 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this gps will work with fltplan go.
Will it work on iPad without phone?
A shopper on Feb 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this gps does not need the cellular connection to work. It is a stand along gps for the iPad.
