This unit certainly allows the Stratus out of the sun and increases its reliability. Used the cradle that came with the Stratus Unit. Still not sure how the ADS-B in will work with the Stratus 2 that I have; I may have to purchase the external antenna for ADS-B in.

Great but be careful

Recommended

Do not place the antenna near your vertical card compass or your compass will deviate significantly (10 degrees) from true heading. Three to four feet separation and you're ok

Is this to mount the Stratus out of the sun and then the antenna goes to the dash?
RobinD06 on Aug 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: First of all adding an external ADS-B antenna GREATLY improves the reception from those sometimes-elusive towers. Then, when you grow tired of the Stratus overheating on the glareshield, or having the suction cup fall off the window during flight it's time to also add the external GPS antenna and stick it under your seat or similar. Then, you realize that the best way to keep in in place is by purchasing the soft flexible mount shown here in my review. I keep the GPS antenna on the glareshield with the cable routed around the left side and down to the floor. The ADS-B antenna is suction-cupped to the left window behind me. The unit goes under my seat such that I can easily access it when I slide the seat back. Works great and never overheats. And with the antennas I've always got coverage.

what is the length of the cord?
A shopper on Jul 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 9 ft, 10 inches.
What connector does this GPS antenna use?
Kate G on Sep 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I can't tell you exactly what the connector number is but I can tell you that the antenna is not made by Appareo (Stratus). It had the manufacturer's name on the packaging but I don't recall it, sorry. I can also add that the connector is a "push-on" type (not a threaded connector) and is gold-plated for good maintenance-free electrical connection. Hope that helps.
Is this just as necessary as the ads-b antenna? If I bought both, would they interfere with each other? Finally, is owning one of the two enough, or is it important to have both? Thanks so much.
William M on Aug 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: William, the antenna's do two totally different things. The GPS antenna only picks up the GPS from the satalites, and the ADSB antenna only picks up the ground based transmissions of weather and traffic. The Stratus unit has both of these antenna built into the unit already, but it must be placed in the plane in such a way that it can see the sky to receive the GPS and see the ground to pick up the ADSB. That works well on the windshield. The problem I had was that in the sun, when the Stratus was on the windshield, the Stratus would overheat and shutdown. I purchased both of the antennas, and put the Stratus under the dash, out of the sun, and I thought it would work fine. The problem was that the External GPS Antenna for the Stratus took out the Garmin 430, which would show a Yellow banner that said GPS Position failed, Use Dead Reconing. Not a good feeling in IMC. I did not realize that the problem was this GPS antenna. My avionics shop changed the Garmin 430 Antenna, then sent the 430 back to Garmin. When it was returned it did the same thing. Through the process of elimination, the problem was tracked back to this antenna. The whole thing cost $2k, so I don't suggest that you try what I did. I think this is a poorly designed product, and I don't suggest that you purchase it.

Does the GPS Antenna mount flat side down? What are the two tiny screws included with GPS Antenna for?
George G on Mar 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The antenna really doesn't "mount". I just lay it on the glare shield, flat side down. The two small screws visible on the flat side are probably there to hold the antenna case together.
i just purchased both of the antennas, i have clear that the ADS-B will be placed on the rear pilot side window, however i have no idea where to place the GPS antenna. I do understand that having it on the glare shield will cause some interference. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Thanks
Nick

BEST ANSWER: The GPS antenna should be place where it has a clear view of the sky if possible.
