Subscription-free weather, ADS-B traffic and backup attitude

The GDL 39 has been a popular ADS-B receiver for years, delivering in-flight weather and ADS-B traffic to iPads, Android tablets and Garmin portable GPSs. The upgraded GDL 39 3D is even better, adding a built-in AHRS so your iPad can now show a backup attitude indicator. It’s an all-in-one tool that can make your tablet a complete in-flight resource and a potentially life-saving backup.

Features:

  • Built-in Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) creates a backup attitude indicator on your tablet
  • Subscription-free ADS-B weather, including animated NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, NOTAMs, TFRs and more
  • Dual band receiver (978 UAT and 1090 ES) allows for reception of ADS-B traffic, with Garmin's TargetTrend display
  • Built-in WAAS GPS delivers accurate position data for moving map features
  • Bluetooth connection to your iPad, Android tablet or aera 660/795 allows for two devices to wirelessly connect simultaneously
  • View complete status information in the Garmin Pilot or ForeFlight app
  • Includes rechargeable battery pack (lasts 2-4 hours)

Requires Garmin Pilot or ForeFlight app to work with iPad or Android devices. Requires cigarette lighter cable (included, works with 12 or 24 volt systems) or battery pack (included) for operation.

Notes:

ADS-B coverage varies by location and altitude – does not work on the ground in most locations. Coverage not available outside US. Not all traffic will be shown; coverage will vary based on equipment and nearby aircraft. In order to maximize available traffic information for the display, the aircraft should also be equipped with a compliant ADS-B Out solution like the GDL 88 or GTX 335/345 transponders.

Good product, works well.

Recommended

This product works well using the Garmin Pilot program on my iPad Mini. I recently took a long cross country trip in my C182 and having the weather showing on my map was great! My only complaint is that the battery doesn't last more than about four hours. Some of the legs of the trip were six to eight hours. I used a spare battery when needed. Overall, a good product that I would recommend to other pilots.

Pros:
Wow!
Cons:
Was hard to auto connect per instructions, so set it to blinking blue LED after turning it on for a manual connect per instructions . Tried ten times at least by auto but no joy on two different IPads. So, hold down the on/off after turning it on (per instructions), blue LED flashes, manual connect process begins....be patient.

Have used Garmin Pilot and FlyQ EFB. Prefer Pilot for flight planning and navigation in flight. Prefer FlyQ for approaches & for weather TAF's and Metars because easy to read in large type and translated, also has a satellite view of the airport environment for easy familiarization when a new arrival point. So, fly with both when on cross country flights using two IPads.

Pros:
Seems to work well and connects every time to my Samsung Note 10.1 Blue tooth was very solid on a 2 hour flight.
Cons:
Traffic information has a issue in NC at 5000 feet. Traffic being reported by ATC did not show and signal from ground station was dropping in and out

Manual provided is very poor lucky it seems to connect easily to my Android tablet. The help in Android Garmin Pilot is a little better but I still do not understand why traffic ground stations kept dropping out at 5000 feet

Pros:
Incredibly accurate GPS and situational awareness tool. Almost as good as the flight panel mounted instrumentation. Adds quite a bit of information to the Garmin app on the iPad with accuracy. Easy to use and once Bluetooth is set up, all future uses are available and automatically connected. I am most impressed flying this as a back-up RNAV GPS approach. The intersections, centerlines and detail offered as to surrounding traffic and detailed weather is enhanced for safety, even in IMC. I am extremely impressed and pleased with the GDL-39.
Cons:
Portable device comes in a soft cover carrying case. Battery extra but easy to charge. I would feel better that a $900.00 sensitive extremely sensitive instrumentation came in a sturdier, hard covered case.

The information garnered from this device is extraordinary. When coupled with the iPad, you have all the tools you need for safety, redundancy and accuracy. On a perfect VFR day, flying approaches using the GDL-39 and iPad is comfortable and extremely reliable and accurate, making all simulated approaches extremely comfortable and on point.

Not Recommended

Pros:
Works well, Does not overheat like other ADS-B receivers I have tried. Nice display for WX and Traffic.
Cons:
I have had the first generation and now tried the 2nd generation GDL-39 3D. I have had trouble with Bluetooth connecting reliably with both. Garmin limits you to two Bluetooth connections at any one time. Very low battery life. Only works with the Garmin Pilot. Unusable with apps like CloudAhoy and XAVION.

Overall works very good. Bluetooth connectivity issues come and go. Very Frustrating. If you are ok with connecting to only two devices and don't need long battery life, and do not need connectivity to other Aviation APPS you will be happy with this device. Like to see someone do a comparison review with the Garmin and Sagetech Clarity ADS-B receivers.

Can I use this with an Aera 660 and Foreflight Pro Plus at the same time?

Garmin GDL 39 3D with Battery (Bluetooth)
Garmin aera 660 GPS (Americas)
Garmin aera 660 GPS (Americas)
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The GDL 39 can connect to 2 devices with Bluetooth plus one by wire. I typically connect it to an Android tablet and and iPad wirelessly and wire it to my Aera, all at the same time.
I fly different airplanes now in my flying club. Is this something that is portable to move between planes?
Jeff Annis on Mar 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Jeff, I have owned the GDL 39 3D for about 6 months now. It is a good portable solution. I just charge it up and place it on the glare shield of my plane. The rubber bottom keeps it from sliding around. No wires to mess with. I get all the features I wanted; ADS-B In, AHARS, Terrain, Weather & Traffic. Another feature is that it is compatible with not only Garmin GPS Navigation products and applications, but also IPad applications like ForeFlight. My GDL 39 3D communicates with my Garmin 796 and my IPad via Bluetooth simultaneously. I value the redundancy in my plane. I recommend it.
What advantage would the GDL-39 3D have over the Stratus -2 if any?
I'm flying with an iPad mini and have a newly installed Trig TT-31. Also would a Garmin 660 addition to my panel I'm looking for redundancy for in flight weather and Traffic. My TT 31 gives me ADSB out.
A shopper on Mar 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The would be no advantage. Both of the ADS-B receivers would display the same information but on different apps. The Stratus uses Foreflight and the Garmin uses Garmin Pilot. The 660 would use the GDL-39 for its weather and traffic.
Is this antena coverage goes outside the USA also? Mexico?
Sergio on Aug 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: ADS-B weather is in the US only. The GPS and AHRS parts work anywhere in the world.
I have ForeFlight Pro Plus wich I understand will work with this Garmin GDL 39... My question is, do I have to purchase an additional subscription from Garmin?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't believe that you would need a Garmin Pilot sub, that we be considering that the 39 works on Foreflight. I didn't know it did. They may have written code to accept the Garmin 39 data. I use the Pilot, I've found it very useful. KJS
