Satellite weather and GPS for ForeFlight

Having accurate in-flight weather in the cockpit is essential for safe flying, and SiriusXM Aviation Weather is the gold standard for pilots. Since it’s delivered by satellite, weather is available at any altitude (even on the ground), throughout the entire Continental US and even most of Canada. The compact SXAR1 is a powerful iPad companion, connecting to the ForeFlight app to deliver GPS position and SiriusXM weather.

Features:

  • Wirelessly connect to ForeFlight on your iPad or iPhone via Bluetooth

  • Built-in WAAS GPS receiver delivers a precise moving map location
  • Small size fits into your pocket for easy portability and placement on the dash
  • Internal SiriusXM and GPS antennas (optional remote antenna available - our product number 1904A or 8032A)
  • Rechargeable internal battery with 8-10 hour life enables completely wireless operation in flight
  • New “Pilot For ForeFlight” subscription package ($39.99/month) offers more weather for less money

Bottom of SXAR1 features a non-slip coating for dash mounting. For window mounting, use the RAM X-Grip with suction cup. Package includes: SXAR1 receiver, protective sleeve, AC power adapter, USB charging cable, quick start guide. Measures 5”w x 1.2”h x 2.7”d. Weighs 1.25 lb. Requires subscription. 90 day warranty. While the SXAR1 will work in Canada, Sirius XM subscriptions are currently only available to US addresses.

Great new product for Foreflight

Recommended

The SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1 works well, is easy to use and does not seem to have the heat issues of the Stratus. The extra weather info is really helpful.

Great for Jet Aircraft

Recommended

I've been using the Stratus 2 for the last year in my Lear35, but found that it wasn't living up to the needs of a jet pilot. I upgraded to the SXAR1 and instantly fell in love with the new data I have on my iPad.

Made the transition

Recommended

I have been using a G496 with SiriusXM wx for 10 yrs +. I bought this to "retire" the 496 and clean off my glare shield. I can't rate the Durability / Reliability as I have only had it a couple of weeks. So far it appears to work great and is much better than the "free" weather, but still trying to find some of the features I liked on the 496 if ForeFlight such as freezing levels and airborne wind graphics.

Falls Short of Potential

Not Recommended

The ability to display XM weather on Foreflight allows this product to make huge strides toward reaching its potential. It is a good product limited by three important shortcomings, and because of those shortcomings, I do not recommend the SXAR1 at this time.
--Lowest tilt radar removes the radar and shows "Radar Not Avail" for approximately 60 seconds every 5 minutes while the radar is updating.
--The colors chosen to paint the precip in Foreflight over intensifies weather. Stand alone light green, probably is a false echo, where as yellow precip paints green on other systems. XM weather has 15 colors available to paint the radar return, Foreflight only uses 7. If they use the full 15 that would be the best fix for this problem.
--Reception good but did have to move the unit at times. Would benefit from having airplane mounted antenna.

SXAR Finally can be used with Foreflight

Recommended

I have been waiting for Foreflight to finally add the SXAR to their program. It is a good start, but obviously designed to just get you a bit more than ADS-B so they can continue to push their Stratus rather than the XM product which is far superior to ADSB weather.
But for those of us that fly serious IFR and up to Canada, the Stratus is not a complete answer.
XM weather is far better.
Missing is Most of Canada, a serious omission, also missing is satellite imagery cloud tops, high res winds, surface maps, cloud and echo tops, Freezing levels, turbulence and icing.
Hopefully this will be coming soon, especially the cloud and echo tops, freezing levels and icing.
it was easy to set up, although you need to call their aviation support line to set it up as you cannot do this on the web.
Looks like it integrates flawlessly into Foreflight, so it is a good first step.
Let Foreflight know that this is a good partial step and that the rest is reaslly needed.

XM weather for ForeFlight is a great addition to Stratus2

Recommended

I have been flying with the Stratus 2 for about a year and a half. Prior to that I used XM on a non-IPad device. I love the XM for Foreflight it is easy to use, and the service is fast. I prefer the XM weather over ADS-B but the stratus offers much more than weather so I will continue to use both at the same time.

Is the subscription fee available month to month?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. best you can do is suspend the service once a year for up to 7 months. So you could turn it on for the flying season and then off during the winter.
I bought one. I've been using it for a few days now. It's great except for one thing. Can I really only get xm weather information to a single device? That's a deal-breaker that should be made clear in the description of the unit's capabilities. Please tell me I'm missing something so I can get info to both iPads we run in the cockpit and my iPhone all at the same time... like the wifi from my stratus 2S.
Troy Wilburn on Oct 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: That's correct - only one device at this time.
Does it also provide Sirius XM audio (presuming an additional cost to activate)?
Eric T on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not at this time, but we'll add that request to the list.
can you use this device concurrently with a Stratus?
A shopper on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can - the SXAR1 is Bluetooth and Stratus is WiFi so both can connect to your iPad simultaneously. The SXAR1 will provide weather, while the Stratus provides GPS, traffic and attitude. It's a great setup.
Is the $39.99 a month subscription required for this receiver or will my current Foreflight yearly subscription still work through this receiver?
A shopper on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The $39.99/month subscription is for SiriusXM weather. You will still need an active ForeFlight subscription.
If I have a Bluetooth headset, will the SXAR1 work simultaneously while using my Bluetooth headset or will it block my headset from connecting to my iPad?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2016
once you purchase the product, what other fees are there? I've looked at the SiriusXM site and it's somewhat confusing.
CharlieB on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The subscription is $39.99/month, and there may be an activation fee.
I have a Stratus 2S already with ForeFlight along with a Garmin 596 with a XM Reciever hardwired to it for XM Weather. I've been waiting on a good way to get the XM Weather to display on ForeFlight with our iPads. Stratus ADS-B weather is better than nothing, but it is not near as good as the XM weather when you compare them side by side (like we do). My question is this: How does the XM weather displayed on Foreflight compare to XM Weather displayed on Garmin 596? There are a lot of nice features on the 596 with XM that are not available on the Foreflight/Stratus combo. Will everything that comes through on the 596 be available on ForeFlight?
Troy W on Sep 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There are some differences between your 696 and the SXAR1. Here is a good side-by-side comparison of the subscription levels and features (note the ForeFlight option): http://www.siriusxm.com/sxmaviation/features
What is the expected battery life?
A shopper on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 8 to 10 hours is typical.
A SEPARATE receiver and subscription for music? If true I don't see the value.
Bob G on Oct 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: In an earlier answer in this thread, Eric indicated there were no plans to include XM radio. Now you sat it's just a matter of a software upgrade? If the unit physically supports XM radio, why not update the app NOW and open the unit up to a larger market looking for a combo receiver? Think I will hold off buying untying that happens.
Can I get the SiriusXM Pilot Pro subscription or am I limited to the features of SiriusXM Pilot For ForeFlight?
Steve on Oct 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Only SiriusXM Pilot for ForeFlight at this time.
What is the virtue of this when Stratus already provides GPS & Weather without a monthly fee ?
A shopper on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Both Stratus and SiriusXM both have their pros and cons - and you can even use them together! SiriusXM works at any altitude, anywhere in the US, so it's good for places with poor ADS-B coverage. It also works in Canada, where ADS-B does not. There are some weather features you get with SiriusXM that are not available with ADS-B, like storm markers and lightning. Finally, SiriusXM radar is the same resolution everywhere in the US (vs. the two resolutions of ADS-B). Note that the SiriusXM radar is the same resolution as regional ADS-B radar (2km).
Does anyone have experience using the Sirius aviation receiver with Foreflight on jet aircraft? Specifically the Citation Sovereign? I tried (with the receiver only, no external antenna), and could not get a good signal, and nothing would update, either in the air or on the ground. I tried placing the receiver on various parts of the glareshield with no luck, the best signal actually on the side window, likely having something to do with the forward windscreen heating elements, but not enough to update Foreflight and get any weather. Would the external antenna help? Any other experience or suggestions?

SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1
SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1
External Antenna Kit for SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1
External Antenna Kit for SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1
BEST ANSWER: I fly a Citation Excel. I had the same issue. I could get only a weak signal and even that was sometimes with just the receiver itself. So I bought the external antenna and as long as the external antenna was mounted to the side window. I could get a better signal, but again...not all the time. We have an external XM antenna mounted on the top of the airplane for a previous owner's purpose. So I took the jumper that comes with the external antenna kit to a cable shop and they made me a connector that would connect to the coax connection in the cockpit for the externally mounted XM antenna. The other end connects to this receiver (obviously) and it works like a charm. Without it I would not have continued to use it. It was too frustrating.
So another $500 a year for weather? Is it that much better than ADS-B?
A shopper on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It depends where and how you fly. SiriusXM works at any altitude, anywhere in the US, so it's good for places with poor ADS-B coverage. It also works in Canada, where ADS-B does not. There are some weather features you get with SiriusXM that are not available with ADS-B, like storm markers and lightning. Does this unit comply with all the regulations post 2020?
Philip E on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, this simply receives SiriusXM weather and GPS position. It does not receive ADS-B and it does not transmit anything. So it does not comply (one way or the other) with the 2020 ADS-B mandate.
Does the refund apply to Canadian purchases?
Philip E on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm not aware of any limitation for Canada. Full details here: http://www.sportys.com/media/pdf/siriusxm2016.pdf

Note that Canadian radar is included in the ForeFlight subscription package.
Coverage in Alaska?
T W on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Only the very southern portion. Coverage map here: http://www.sportys.com/media/pdf/siriusxmcoverage.pdf
Where can I buy a extra charging cable?
A shopper on Mar 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can purchase the MicroUSB cable at any retailer that would sell computers.
Can this device be charged while in use in the airplane?
William D on Feb 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can be charged while in use in the airplane.
Is a plan available from XM that shows Radar Tops and lightening? It appears the plan for Foreflight does not include the Radar tops
Terry K on Feb 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, ForeFlight recently added cloud tops and echo tops. Lightning is also included.
Does the unit work with AvPlan EFB?
Leo M on Feb 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Not at this time.
I have a blue tooth enable Garmin 345 transponder with a 530W gps. Can I push xm weather to the 530W?
Joel N on Feb 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. There is no way to get XM weather from the iPad to the 530W through the 345. You would need to buy a separate XM receiver that interfaces to the 530W.
When will XM Radio be Functional on the SXAR1? Will it require purchasing and upgraded SXAR1 receiver, like when New Stratus Receiver models were introduced, or is the the SXAR1 capable of receiving Music and News? What is the timeframe for this to happen?
A shopper on Feb 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Currently there are no plans to update the SXAR1 with music.
I have noticed that my GPS accuracy is better on my Stratus 2 (1m) than my SXAR1 (5m or greater) which compares with my GPS on IPad (5m or greater) which the IPad is not Waas capable. My question is if the SXAR1 is Waas GPS like the Stratus 2 the why shouldn't the accuracy be just as good?
Dairel L on Dec 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The difference in the accuracy has to do with the way the signal is delivered to the iPad. The blue tooth signal is interfaced with the IOS and even with a waas receiver the accuracy in between 5-10 meters. The Stratus uses a wifi signal which is delivered directly to the app. This allows the accuracy to be as little as 1 meter with the stratus.

The SXAR1 is a waas receiver.
Does the SXAR! come with mounting bracket like the Stratus?
Paul B on Nov 29, 2016
My iPad Air 2 does not have GPS so will it work with Xm weather?
Titanic on Nov 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will - the SXAR1 includes a GPS.
This question regards the use of external power--Does the unit have the capability to be switched on by the application of an external power source?
A shopper on Nov 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't think so. When external power is applied to mine, the light comes on to show it is charging, but it does not power on. Powering on still requires a push of the button.
What type of connector does the SXM port have?
A shopper on Nov 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Depends on which connector you're talking about... The power connector is a micro USB like on the Stratus 2S or an Android - the unit comes with a charger. There are also connectors for an external GPS and external Sattelite antennae, but they are not required since those are internal as well.
would the SXAR1 GPS work with JeppFD in my mini Ipad?
albert b on Oct 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not at this time - just ForeFlight and WSI Pilotbrief.
Does the XM coverage include the Caribbean like the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Jamaica?
Randy H on Oct 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You'll get some coverage, but not all the way to the DR or Jamaica. Mostly the western Bahamas and western Cuba, but not the Out Islands or further south.
