First product I have returned in years. I sent the product back after 3 days of trying to use it. The Bluetooth connectivity was poor and and very hard to get it to link up, maybe I had a bad unit. I also only wanted it for the radio only and you have to purchase the weather subscription to make the XM radio work. Sportys is great and I adore you, but this product is not for me.July 18, 2018Purchased

3 months agoWould You Recommend?YesA good little box with limitationsThe box works well with the ipad. That said, I wish it worked with other apps. Where is the WSI app that it supposedly works with?
Other things I dislike:
1) It doesn't have any RS232 output, so can't interface to any panel equipment.
2) That wished-for interface doesn't support WSI formatted data. I'm desperately searching for a WSI RS232 formatted box that will allow me to access WSI weather like my now unsupported AV300 did.March 19, 2018Durability4 / 5Reliability4 / 5Performance1 / 5Ease Of Use3 / 5Value2 / 5Would You Recommend?Yesworks well, but not much value if you already have a StratusNo need to own this if you own a stratus, specially at 3

I have a PS Engineering Bluetooth audio panel and the SXAR1 is able to stream the XM audio through that and subsequently to all of the headsets in the plane.November 26, 2017Performance3 / 5Doesn't Work With Garmin GMA350CI bought this to stream satellite radio into my Garmin GMA350C audio panel by bluetooth. It worked for about a minute, then the audio would cut out. I had to disconnect and reconnect to the audio panel, then the whole cycle repeated. I ended up returning it to Sporty's and going back to streaming from the SiriusXM app on my phone. That's not a stable source either, depending on cell signal, but it works OK. It did work fine if I wanted to stream just to my Lightspeed headset, but I want to stream to all seats not just mine. The unit works fine, it just doesn't play well with the GMA.October 12, 2017Purchased

Browse 60 questions Browse 60 questions and 73 answersIs the subscription fee available month to month?BEST ANSWER: No. best you can do is suspend the service once a year for up to 7 months. So you could turn it on for the flying season and then off during the winter.I bought one. I've been using it for a few days now. It's great except for one thing. Can I really only get xm weather information to a single device? That's a deal-breaker that should be made clear in the description of the unit's capabilities. Please tell me I'm missing something so I can get info to both iPads we run in the cockpit and my iPhone all at the same time... like the wifi from my stratus 2S.BEST ANSWER: That's correct - only one device at this time.can you use this device concurrently with a Stratus?BEST ANSWER: Yes you can - the SXAR1 is Bluetooth and Stratus is WiFi so both can connect to your iPad simultaneously. The SXAR1 will provide weather, while the Stratus provides GPS, traffic and attitude. It's a great setup.I have heated windshields in my CL300. Will this unit work with that aircraft?Does it also provide Sirius XM audio (presuming an additional cost to activate)?BEST ANSWER: Update: XM audio is now available. If I have a Bluetooth headset, will the SXAR1 work simultaneously while using my Bluetooth headset or will it block my headset from connecting to my iPad?BEST ANSWER: You will only be able to connect your headset to the SXAR1, not the iPad.Is the $39.99 a month subscription required for this receiver or will my current Foreflight yearly subscription still work through this receiver?BEST ANSWER: The $39.99/month subscription is for SiriusXM weather. You will still need an active ForeFlight subscription.once you purchase the product, what other fees are there? I've looked at the SiriusXM site and it's somewhat confusing.BEST ANSWER: The subscription is $39.99/month, and there may be an activation fee.A SEPARATE receiver and subscription for music? If true I don't see the value.BEST ANSWER: Not a separate receiver - music will work with the SXAR1, the app just doesn't support it yet. What is the expected battery life?BEST ANSWER: 8 to 10 hours is typical.I have a Stratus 2S already with ForeFlight along with a Garmin 596 with a XM Reciever hardwired to it for XM Weather. I've been waiting on a good way to get the XM Weather to display on ForeFlight with our iPads. Stratus ADS-B weather is better than nothing, but it is not near as good as the XM weather when you compare them side by side (like we do). My question is this: How does the XM weather displayed on Foreflight compare to XM Weather displayed on Garmin 596? There are a lot of nice features on the 596 with XM that are not available on the Foreflight/Stratus combo. Will everything that comes through on the 596 be available on ForeFlight?BEST ANSWER: There are some differences between your 696 and the SXAR1. Here is a good side-by-side comparison of the subscription levels and features (note the ForeFlight option): http://www.siriusxm.com/sxmaviation/featuresThis question regards the use of external power--Does the unit have the capability to be switched on by the application of an external power source?BEST ANSWER: I don't think so. When external power is applied to mine, the light comes on to show it is charging, but it does not power on. Powering on still requires a push of the button.I've had one of these boxes for over a year. Works wonderful in an Embraer Legacy 650 and has helped us make great weather decisions in flight. Recently I changed aircraft into a Gulfstream GIVSP and it cannot receive any data and I'm suspecting the older heated windshields might be to blame. Anyone have any insight on a workaround? Is the bluetooth powerful enough to place the unit in the cabin and receive it in the flight deck?BEST ANSWER: We do have an external antenna that can be placed next to one of the unheated windows. It is our product 1904A.What is the virtue of this when Stratus already provides GPS & Weather without a monthly fee ?BEST ANSWER: Both Stratus and SiriusXM both have their pros and cons - and you can even use them together! SiriusXM works at any altitude, anywhere in the US, so it's good for places with poor ADS-B coverage. It also works in Canada, where ADS-B does not. There are some weather features you get with SiriusXM that are not available with ADS-B, like storm markers and lightning. Finally, SiriusXM radar is the same resolution everywhere in the US (vs. the two resolutions of ADS-B). Note that the SiriusXM radar is the same resolution as regional ADS-B radar (2km).Will a Bad Elf Pro work simultaniously with a Sirius XM SXAR1 in ForeFlight Mobile on my iPad?SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1Can I get the SiriusXM Pilot Pro subscription or am I limited to the features of SiriusXM Pilot For ForeFlight?BEST ANSWER: Only SiriusXM Pilot for ForeFlight at this time.Does anyone have experience using the Sirius aviation receiver with Foreflight on jet aircraft? Specifically the Citation Sovereign? I tried (with the receiver only, no external antenna), and could not get a good signal, and nothing would update, either in the air or on the ground. I tried placing the receiver on various parts of the glareshield with no luck, the best signal actually on the side window, likely having something to do with the forward windscreen heating elements, but not enough to update Foreflight and get any weather. Would the external antenna help? Any other experience or suggestions?SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1BEST ANSWER: Yes. I fly a Sovereign and had the same experience. We found that if we placed the unit alone (elevated on a box of tissues) in the galley window (westbound) and the lav window (eastbound) that it works fine from those locations, however I didn't consider this to be a practical solution. So we ordered the external antenna and have been experimenting with it for several weeks. We tried it in the forward windscreen (below the heating elements) with no success. The only location in the cockpit where we can receive a usable signal is in the aft (unheated) cockpit windows but only when the window has some southerly exposure. Consequently we have contemplated getting two external antennas, one for each window, and wiring them together so that we can get a signal regardless of our direction of flight. But at this point I'm starting to feel like the whole experiment may require too many compromises. It appears that getting this to work is going to result in a tangle of antenna and power wires . And given the additional limitation that the unit will only serve one iPad at a time...well its making me consider other options.I currently use foreflight with stratus 2s and also a garmin aera 660 with gdl 39, i would like to have the advantages of XM weather, should i get the gdl 51 or SXAR1 to have the whole picture, the idea would be to clean my cockpit from too many devices. any suggestions?SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1BEST ANSWER: I am a long time user of XM weather, I think I am one of the first 100 original customers. I will not fly without XM. I have been using the SXAR1 with Foreflight since it first became available last December. Now I get all the XM on Foreflight. It is an excellent product, seamlessly integrated. The SXAR1 battery lasts over 8 hours, I cannot tell you how long it will last, as it has never run out on a day of flying. It is a really good solution. I think it is better than the Garmin as it is smaller, and it is cheaper. The Fore Flight XM subscription does not have the Surface Visibility Forecast, Freezing Level, NOTAMS, Special Use Airspace Status and Tropical Storm Tracks with Windfields Observed, nor all the icing information products that I was used to in the Pro subscription plan that I was used to. (NOTAMS, Special Use Airspace Status were never available on XM), and I would really like to see the Freezing level especially, and also the surface visibility forecasts added. I am hoping they will add all those to the XM as it is getting harder an harder to justify XM vs ADS B for many pilots. I fly to Canada regularly so the XM is the only option up there, as ADS B is not available in Canada.Noticed on receiver image a METAR that was 28 minutes old, how frequently are METARS updated on XM?BEST ANSWER: XM updates the Metars every 12min but keep in mind that the METAR itself may not be updated that frequently at the airport if conditions do not change significantly - that is how you end up with one that is 28min old.So another $500 a year for weather? Is it that much better than ADS-B?BEST ANSWER: It depends where and how you fly. Note that the SiriusXM radar is the same resolution as regional ADS-B radar (2km).Does this unit comply with all the regulations post 2020?BEST ANSWER: No, this simply receives SiriusXM weather and GPS position. It does not receive ADS-B and it does not transmit anything. So it does not comply (one way or the other) with the 2020 ADS-B mandate.Does the refund apply to Canadian purchases?BEST ANSWER: A US address is required to get the rebate.

I am told that Canadian weather will not be available in 2018.BEST ANSWER: The receiver must be registered to a US address. The weather is able to be received in Canada.
I am not aware that weather will not be available in 2018.Will it work in Canada?BEST ANSWER: The SXAR1 requires a US address to activate but can receive weather in Canada. What kind of rechargeable battery is in the SXAR1? Is it a Lithium Ion battery? Can the internal battery be replaced when it wears out (even if lithium ion)? I don't see an access door/panel on the SXAR1 for replacing the battery. Can it be sent in to the manufacturer to get a new battery? (I believe you can do that with iPads, which also aren't designed with a user replaceable battery.) I think pilots have a right to answers to these questions. My SXAR1 isn't even 10 months old and it is 'dead'. It won't charge, and apparently it needs some kind of charge to even start up, because it won't even start up while connected to a USB port capable of 2.0 amps. Am I out $300? If so, at least I'm not out $500. The SXAR1 was $300 after $200 rebate when I bought it in late October 2016. Now it's $500 after a $200 rebate. That's a lot of money for a device that has a very finite and short life, because of a non-replaceable vital battery. It shouldn't matter if my SXAR1 sat in a drawer for 5 weeks because of an annual inspection. It should be designed to take that, or at least not be effectively destroyed because of it. I went from being overjoyed to have satellite weather on my panel, to feeling robbed, even conned by the Sirius company. Should have know with only a 90 day warranty.
N35609BEST ANSWER: Sporty's sent me a new SXAR1. They really do stand by the products they sell. - Joel Mason KCUBI just got my 172 back from a 5 week annual inspection. I left the SXAR1 in a drawer in my hangar in the little box it came in. Now the SXAR1 will not charge or power up. I tried the charging a/c adapter and USB cord it came with, and the one for my Galaxy S4 phone with same result. The light on the SXAR1 under the charge port is amber (charging) most of the time when attempting to charge the SXAR1, and sometimes it even turns green (charged), but still it will not power on. I held power switch for many seconds, but the 'ON' light on the top just turns red as long as I'm holding the power button in, and goes out when release the button. I even tried holding it 30 seconds once.
I inserted a USB amp meter between the USB cord and adapter, and have 4.87 volts but AMPS draw is zero. It obviously isn't charging.
Bought the SXAR1 late October of last year. Just found out the warranty was only 90 days. I know I'm screwed by the Sirius company, but will Sporty's make this right? This thing was expensive! If I have throw to away a $300 box (after $200 rebate), well that just isn't right. By the way, I did get the $200 rebate debit card from Sirius, but they never sent me a $50 service PIN.
Can you do anything to help, Sporty's? It's pointless to try to get Sirius to make it right. Can't believe this very expensive thing only has a 90 day warranty.

If not is there an adapter available?SiriusXM Aviation Receiver SXAR1BEST ANSWER: The antenna that is used for the 496 will not work with the sxar1. Garmin does not have and adapter available. If I do not have blue tooth headsets, will the sxar1 connect to the aircraft audio system via a cable?BEST ANSWER: The Sxar1 requires a blue tooth connections to the headset. When using the xsar1 for xm radio does it plug into audio panel or does iPad have to plug into audio panel to get radio to play through aircraft audio system?BEST ANSWER: The Sirus receiver is controlled and played via Foreflight. You can view a video of how to connect at Foreflight. com.
