Indispensable
I run it from a 12 volt to USB adapter and it works perfectly; it even cooled to usability an already overheated iPad (left exposed to the sun) in less than a minute. The 4 stars is because I think that the design of the knee strap might do with some attention (it barely reaches around my thigh and I am 65kg and 183m tall) plus the price, which, when imported to the UK, seems steep although I appreciate that it is a niche product. Nevertheless, it does the job and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Defective out of box
The unit arrived fine. Put in the batteries, switched on, fans started.... lots of noise.... fans hitting housings. Noticed the entire S-Naut has a warp twist to it. Mounted my iPad in it... fits fine... this forced most of the twist out, and 2 of the fans locked up due to housing fit twist. Am returning today for a replacement. I really like the idea. The product looks well made but the twist / warp in the longitudinal axis is a fatal flaw for this unit. Because other reviewers have not had this experience my return has a request to replace this unit to give it another chance at success! MANUFACTURER'S RESPONSE Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry that you received a unit with this issue, we have identified the problem and are making updates immediately. Please send your contact information to info@xnaut. Our goal is to ensure that you have an amazing experience with our product line.

Avoiding the Black Screen of Death
If you're reading this you've probably experienced it, "The Black Screen of Death". If you haven't, consider yourself lucky and be proactive in avoiding it. I'm talking about IPad battery overheat and the subsequent "Black Screen of Death". If you're a VFR pilot who carries paper backup, it might not be a big deal, but if you're on an approach, in the soup, it's frightening to have your only source of data go "bye-bye". I first had this happen with the IPad 2 when this product didn't exist. I then bought an additional IPad (Air) and a second yoke mount so I'd have a backup for Foreflight if one IPad went down. Since I started using the X-Naut for the IPad Air I've had no overheating problems, even while flying westbound in the Southwest with the sun beating down directly on it. I highly recommend this product; I consider it a mandatory piece of safety equipment for any pilot using an IPad as they're sole source inflight information. I'm looking forward to testing it in even more challenging conditions flying low altitude in the desert Southwest this coming summer. Will update.

Works perfectly and adds tremendous value to iPad
Im surprised that X-Naut didnt work for the prior reviewer. My experience has been the exact opposite. My iPad used to overheat when I flew low-wing planes. I like to use ForeFlight while I'm flying, so I really didnt like it when my iPad shut down. I hoped that X-Naut might be the cure, and I bought one. The X-Naut arrived several days before my next scheduled flight, and I was anxious to test it. I did so by placing my iPad in direct sunlight in my backyard. I put the iPad in the X-Naut, but I kept the X-Naut turned off, until the iPad overheated and shut down. I then turned the X-Naut on, without letting the iPad cool off first, and I left it in the sun in exactly the same position that resulted in its overheating. After I turned the X-Naut on, the iPad came back to "life" in just a few minutes, even though it was still in direct sunlight and had been the whole time. Several days later, I flew with a friend from Torrance (KTOA) to San Bernardino (KSBD) and back, in a low-wing plane with a clear green house canopy. The sun was shining brightly and it was a hot day. I used my X-Naut with my iPad Pro 9.7, and it worked perfectly for the entire 2-hour flight. My friend used his iPad mini, without an X-Naut, and his iPad overheated and shut down about mid-way through the outbound leg. My friend then bought an X-Naut too, and since then, we have taken many flights together, each of us using an X-Naut, and neither of us has had our iPads shut down. I have tried to imagine why the X-Naut did not work for the prior reviewer, and two possibilities occur to me. The X-Naut is very quiet, and I once forgot to turn it on! Its possible the prior reviewer did too. Also, in order for the X-Nauts fans to work properly, the iPad must be inserted into the X-Naut in the correct direction. An iPad can be inserted, physically, into the X-Naut in two different directions, without harming the iPad or the X-Naut. But in order for the X-Nauts fans to keep the iPad cool, the iPad has to be inserted with its home button on the bottom and the X-Nauts logo on the top and its fans on the left. I hope the prior reviewer asked for a replacement X-Naut (and not just a refund), because like him, I really wanted it to work, and it does, for me.

Works great required for hot areas
I was one of the first to test the prototype and this has worked for me perfectly every time. I teach in Arizona, California and Texas a lot and need the x-naut to keep my ipad safe and working during the summer. Especially critical for the greenhouse planes like diamond star, cirrus, grumman etc. This makes the difference in having a working ipad when you need it which is critical for safety.

IT DOES NOT WORK
I have used this now the for 6th flight and about an hour into the flight the message still keeps coming across my iPad Air 2 that the unit is overheating. Can this be mounted directly into the instrument panel?
Ron B on Jul 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It has the standard 4 hole amps pattern on the back. This matches up with many RAM attachments. Flush mounting will probably not work well and make it pretty hard to access everything. It was really intended to be a portable unit.
When can we see this product for the Ipad Mini?

Will you be coming out with a cooling unit for the iPad Pro 12.9" ?
A J D on Jul 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We haven't heard of any plans for this, but stay tuned.
Where is the micro USB power input? I can't see it in the pictures. I'm trying to determine if a straight or 90 degree connector would work best. Thanks.
A shopper on May 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Either one works well. With my iPad in portrait mode the port is in the top right hand side. I do not put my iPad in the case until I have turned on the avionics master (plugs into my PSI audio panel) and I verify that the fans are running. I have them on the bottom of the case.
Had the iPad overheating issue and just received my XNaut. Would like to get a screen protector to protect the new iPad I bight just for flying. Tried Zagg, Apple Store and Best Buy and could not find one with glare reduction glass. Sportys reviewed one called Armour Glass that apparently works good, but I am not sure it will fit under the XNaut side tabs. Reviews said it is poly Glass and can fracture. Anyone had any luck with a good screen protector that works with the XNaut? Thanks for the help.
Dave K on Apr 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for asking, however I don't use/need any glare reduction cover ... I have iPad mounted on a RAM pillar support and simply tilt the screen away from objectionable sun reflections ... also, Absolutely clean ALL finger marks from screen prior to flight ... otherwise reading the screen is quite annoying!
Have other users had issues with this product not working as in the only review here?
twbpilot on Oct 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I used it on a 95 day and my iPad Air 2 did not overheat. Before using this case, I would position towels over the iPad and have the air vent pointed directly on the iPad. Initially, when I had my iPad over heat on a Feb day back two years ago, I was on an approach into Erie PA and the unit turned off. I then purchased an iPad mini as a further backup just because the overheating issue is so bad with my bonanza and the iPad mounted on the Yoke. In addition to the 95 day mentioned above, I have flown 7 more hours with the cooling case and my iPad has not overheated and I have stopped protecting it from direct sunlight.
What are the voltage and current requirements of a 12V charger when using the USB cable?
Fred W on Aug 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I do not know the amps; however, it works on my 12 volt system. I am using my PS 450 audio panel usb jack to power the fans. It does work on my cigarette lighter as well. I also have the batteries installed in the device as well in the event of a power failure. I have not had an overheating issue since using the cooling case.
Can this be used as a knee pad or only as a mount? Is there another knee pad that can help with the overheat problem?
Steven F on Aug 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Buy this accessory to use it as a complete kneeboard: http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/x-naut-cooling-ipad-kneeboard-kit.html
Will an iPad 9.7 with the Armor glass installed fit in this product?
A shopper on Jun 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is sufficient clearance between the retaining lugs and an iPad Air 2 screen to take one 0·25 mm thick business card, but not two. If your Armour Glass is 0·25 mm thick or less, therefore, I expect that it will be ok.
Does it come with the Ram Circle Base Hardware (RAM-B-202U-G) with it or do i need to buy it separate?
A shopper on Apr 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does not include the Ram Circle Base.
Will an iPad With otter box case, 7.75"x 9.875"x.75" fit the x-naut?
Joe R on Jan 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, it won't work with much of a case on it. It's fairly form-fitting.
When will the MyGoFlight adapter be available?
A shopper on Aug 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hopefully within the next few weeks. We are working on it.
Will the larger model fit a 4th generation iPad?
Keith H on Aug 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. It will not. This fits iPad Air 1 and 2 as well as the 9.7" iPad Pro.
Although I've never had an iPad over heat it looks neat (little expensive). What stats exist of actual iPads that have shut down in flight?
A shopper on Aug 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We're not aware of any stats on it. The rate seems to vary by iPad model (the older iPad 3 and 4 are notoriously hot), type of airplane (bubble canopy low wing is the worst) and where you fly (Arizona is obviously worse than North Dakota).
Can this connect to a kneeboard from Sporty's or can it connect to a yoke mount? I use the ipad now on a kneeboard and the ipad heats up and turns off after about an hour on my knee. I need a solution quick or i can't rely on using Foreflight software.
Kenny A on Jul 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is a little large to work on a kneeboard - you could do it, but we wouldn't recommend it. It does fit RAM mounts, so you can mount it on a yoke. Use this to connect the X-Naut to a RAM arm: http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/ram-circle-base-with-hardware-ram-b-202u-g1u.html
Is the leg mounting unit included in the price? If not how much is it?
Is the USB cable and charger included? If not how much extra is it?
A shopper on Jul 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Both of those are extra, but we expect to add them to our site shortly.
Will the iPad cooling case fit into a Ram mount ?
Bill P on Jul 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it has the standard RAM 4-hole pattern on the back.
I fly a Cirrus SR22 and have had the iPad overheating problem. I've noticed that many replies mention the RAM mount, however, in a Cirrus with the non-standard yoke the RAM mount doesn't seem like an option (unless there is a good way that someone can recommend for a Cirrus aircraft?)

I worry with the knee board add on in a Cirrus if I'm going to be right back in the same boat on a longer flight where the sun shines directly on the iPad on a kneeboard, except it will last a little longer before shutting off because of the fans?
