Our award-winning courses have helped over 50,000 pilots learn to fly or add a rating, but we're never standing still. The Sporty's Academy team is constantly adding new content and innovative features to make our Learn to Fly Course the best training product in aviation. It's everything you need to prepare for your written test and earn your pilot certificate, with ground school, test prep, and real world training - all in one easy-to-use package.

Why Sporty's course? Here are 7 reasons:

1. Save time and money

For the cost of a single flight lesson, our course will save you hours of time in the air and hundreds of dollars. The step-by-step video lessons are better than ground school, helping you prepare for your next flight lesson ahead of time so you spend less time reviewing and more time learning.

Completion certificate2. Get your written test endorsement

Ace the written with our interactive test preparation program. You can create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass. We’ll even give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—right from the course! You can take this endorsement to the FAA testing center.

3. Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Incredible 3D animations and dynamic in-flight video make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Airman Certification Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

4. Be ready for real world flying

Learning to fly means a lot more than just passing a test. That’s why Sporty’s course goes beyond the textbook to teach you real world flying, making you a safer, more confident pilot. Special Air Facts segments with renowned aviation author Richard Collins are packed with no-nonsense tips you can use after the checkride.

5. Includes the new Airman Certification Standards

Sporty's courses are famous for being the most up-to-date and complete training products available. That focus continues with the FAA's introduction of new Airman Certification Standards (ACS). Our Learn to Fly Course includes the full text of this document - your guide to the checkride - and cross-references each task to the video segments. Our course also emphasizes deep understanding instead of just memorizing questions, something the FAA now discourages.

6. Covers Private, Recreational and Sport

Our Learn to Fly Course is really three courses in one – you choose the license that makes sense for you. Get started with your training and progress toward your first solo, the critical first step for everyone. Then choose the Sport, Recreational or Private Pilot track – it’s all here! Plus, experience has shown that students learn most effectively when the training process is divided into manageable steps. So each module builds on the previous one, creating a building-block approach that saves you time and money.

Modular training

7. Three convenient formats available

Study anywhere, anytime – choose from DVD, online or on iPad. Your time is valuable, so we offer our complete course in a variety of formats to suit different needs. Choose the one that is best for you. Every feature of our complete course is available in each of the three formats, so you can study on your TV, Mac, PC, iPad or iPhone. No complicated software to install – it just works!

Pros: I struggled with the option of DVD vs. iPad/Online vs. I ultimately chose the DVD vs. because I did not want to deal with the iPad/Online content expiring. I also prefer watching the videos and reviewing the material repeatedly on the big screen. The content moves fast, but is very thorough. Cons: None... I feel it is a bit pricy, but in the end a fair deal when compared the cost of flight instruction, etc.

Pros: The DVDs are perfect for any student, being able to watch the different sections before the lessons and then reviewing after has been very helpful. They have made it so much easier to grasp what my instructor is trying to teach, because it is not the first time seeing or hearing the material. The DVDs are a great base to learn from, and make the time with your instructor much more productive.

Nice
Simple explainations with great graphics that demystify the mystery to get on the way to mastery. Like the product says "...for the cost of a single lesson..." you get so much more.

Are these the DVD's that were produced in 2006? Or are these newer versions?
Shawn A on Jul 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: These videos are constantly updated - most of the segments have been updated in the previous two years, including some significant upgrades in just the past few months. Current questions are always available in the online Study Buddy that you get access to with the course.
Does the DVD version have the quizzes at the end of each section like the online version?
Justn P on Apr 23, 2017
I am fourteen wanting to become a pilot. Is this course good for me?
A shopper on Aug 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. In fact, I'm using it as part of the flight and ground training for a 14-year old. You will still need an experienced pilot to help guide you. If you're planning on starting formal flight training, check with your CFI. Our CFI's at Concord, NH like the Sporty's course. It has great video sequences and graphic explanations. Fly safe and have a blast!
I am a (soloing) student pilot, (with his own plane) who has purchased ASA's Complete Private Pilot course and am finding it seriously lacking, in the ground school information and formatting. Al of the charts and graphs are too small for me to read, even with reading glasses and a full page magnifier. It appears to me as though it has been put together by someone suffering from ADHD... I have been warned off from King Schools products, by my CFI, who said that it would 'put me to sleep'. I've heard that Sportys is a popular course. Is the information contained within sequentially presented, or must I root around trying to figure out, or recall, where the information that I'm seeking resides? Can I just buy the ground school, or should I get the entire course? Please advise, as this ground schooling is holding me back from getting my rating.
Rocky B on Oct 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have recently tried the Sporty's, ASA, and King courses. I find the King course easiest to follow, setup in the most logical and practical manner, and I know of several VERY LARGE FLIGHT SCHOOLS that use the King Syllabus and videos. I've been instructing for 25 years and I disagree with your CFI.
I see the picture showing the DVDs with copyright in year 2011, are the video quality as good as the promotional video on youtube in 1080p? Or if i buying it now, the actual DVD receive will have been updated and showing newer years on the DVD cover?
C.K. C on Oct 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, all the videos are updated as soon as we add new segments. Most of these have been updated in the last 2 years in fact.
Does this DVD course cover all knowledge required for the written exam? For example, weather theory, physics of flight, rules of the road, weight - and - balance calculations etc.?
MikeE on Sep 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Mike, Yes it does, but not in great detail. I reviewed the Sporty's course for a student of mine, and I returned it and got the King Schools Video Ground School instead. It is more thorough and has a better sequence, in my opinion.
