9 reasons pilots prefer Sporty's courses:

1. Save time and money

For the cost of a single flight lesson, our course will save you hours of time in the air and hundreds of dollars. The step-by-step video lessons are better than ground school, helping you prepare for your next flight lesson ahead of time so you spend less time reviewing and more time learning.

Completion certificate2. Get your written test endorsement

Ace the written with our interactive test preparation program. You can create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass. We’ll even give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—right from the course! You can take this endorsement to the FAA testing center, and log it in your ForeFlight logbook.

3. Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Incredible 3D animations and dynamic in-flight video make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Airman Certification Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

4. Be ready for real-world flying

Learning to fly means a lot more than just passing a test. That’s why Sporty’s course goes beyond the textbook to teach you real world flying, making you a safer, more confident pilot. Special Air Facts segments with renowned aviation author Richard Collins are packed with no-nonsense tips you can use after the checkride.

5. Includes the new Airman Certification Standards

Sporty's courses are famous for being the most up-to-date and complete training products available. That focus continues with the FAA's introduction of new Airman Certification Standards (ACS). Our Learn to Fly Course includes the full text of this document - your guide to the checkride - and cross-references each task to the video segments. Our course also emphasizes deep understanding instead of just memorizing questions, something the FAA now discourages.

6. Covers Private, Recreational and Sport

Our Learn to Fly Course is really three courses in one – you choose the license that makes sense for you. Get started with your training and progress toward your first solo, the critical first step for everyone. Then choose the Sport, Recreational or Private Pilot track – it’s all here! Plus, experience has shown that students learn most effectively when the training process is divided into manageable steps. So each module builds on the previous one, creating a building-block approach that saves you time and money.

Modular training

7. Three convenient formats Included

Study anywhere, anytime – one purchase includes access to our online learning platform, our iPhone/iPad app, and our Apple TV app. Your time is valuable, so we offer our complete course in a variety of formats to suit different needs. Choose the one that is best for you, and switch back and forth at any time with automatic progress sync. Our course works on PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, tablets, smartphones and even Apple TV.

Loving it!
Interesting course filled with the information needed to succeed at passing the Private Pilot knowledge test. I am about 55% complete with the course and am looking forward to the practice tests and flash cards. I tried to use another popular course a couple years ago and it was so dry and boring that the experience alone probably contributed to me putting off this lifetime dream. I recommend this Sporty's course in all confidence. It is far from boring and you will enjoy learning.

Great course! Gives most if not all the information I’ll need to take my written. Great HD video quality as well. Only thing I would change would be that the videos aren’t as “engaging” as something like King Schools or Mzeroa.com. All that aside, it’s a great course for how much cheaper it is than a lot of others.!

Impressive Presentations and good material.
Very good video and training material. I used it in conjunction with the Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and the Airplane Flying Handbook. It was good to go at my own pace as I work full time and wanted to study and test on my schedule. The sample tests are very good as well. One thing I would ask for is the ability to call up under one location all the answers you have got wrong in the sample tests. It helped me pass the written and now what's next?

Excellent Course!
This is a very good alternative to hours and hours of ground school. I used it as my main course and supplemented with other online sources when there was something I didn't quite understand. The videos are well done and about as engaging as they could be. And the automatic written endorsement was the real selling point for me - nice to be able to do this at my own pace and independently. I passed the written exam last weekend with flying colors, and so could anyone who carefully goes through this course and does plenty of extracurricular studying and practice tests.

Excellent Information at a Heavy Cost
This is a great product for those hoping to earn their private pilot certificate (especially if you skipped ground school) but the cost is high for the content you get. The layout of the information and flow is well done. Each video covers a specific topic with clarity. The biggest downside aside from the cost is the lack of interaction. There are a few quizzes to take after videos but the "interactive" maneuvers has no interaction. I was not expecting a full blown flight sim in which to manipulate or practice things from the video but when you hear the word interactive you almost hope for an interactive graphic of sort that is manipulated by the user's inputs. No such thing is in this training so I'm not sure where the "interaction" is other than watching the videos. Nonetheless the content that is here is great if you can swallow that high cost.

Not the cake, but the icing!
Better than paying 5 hours of ground school. Ties what you read in the book and what you learn in the sky wonderfully. Would love to see more downloadable supplemental training materials. A must buy BEFORE starting flight school. Save money and go in prepared.

Browse 40 questions Browse 40 questions and 46 answers
1)Will this course enable me to pass the oral portion of the FAA test as well?
2)How does it help with the flight portion of the test? Does it take you thru the steps of flying the aircraft?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Neil P on Jan 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it is total preparation - the written/knowledge test for sure, but also the oral portion and the checkride. While there's a written test prep tool to practice all the questions, the videos are focused on really teaching the material so you understand it, not just memorize it. You'll also get a preview of the checkride in the last part of the videos. This is a complete course.
Can I also use the iPhone/iPad app if I only buy the online version? Or do I have to buy both the online and the iOS version in order to watch the videos on both my PC and my iPhone?
A shopper on Sep 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: With the new 2018 courses, you get access to the online version, the iOS app, and the Apple TV app - all for the same price and all with automatic sync. Just buy once and use it anywhere.
Is this ground school acceptable?
A shopper on Jul 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure what "acceptable" is in this context, so I'll address a couple of them:
1)Do the FAA testing centers accept the Sporty's Certificate of Completion? Yes.
2)Is the training sufficient to pass the test? Yes. I just finished with the video training and practiced the questions until I mastered them. I scored a 98% on the FAA Test (missed one question).
3)Are the videos any good? Absolutely. They add a lot of context to the questions that you can't get by just reading the questions and memorizing the answers.
4)Are the test questions identical to those on the test? Not exactly. Some are, some are different. For example, no practice question addresses the test question that asks about the Mode required on the transponder when squawking 1200. The answer is to set the transponder to "Mode 3/A Code 1200". It was the only question I missed.

I hope this answers the question.

3)
Does it have a quiz at the end of each section or chapter?
A shopper on Jul 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There are short quizzes (2-3 questions) roughly every other video. These questions do not effect the progress of your lessons if answered incorrectly. They are there to help you.
For the online format how long is the material available to you?
Darrell A on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no expiration date - you get free updates delivered automatically.
Can I also watch the videos on my iPhone if I buy the online version? Or do I have to purchase both the online and the iPhone version in order to watch the videos on both my PC and my iPhone?
A shopper on Sep 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: With the 2018 course, you get access to the online, iOS app, and Apple TV app - all for the same price and all with automatic sync. Just buy once and use it anywhere.
I purchased the Sporty's online Private Pilot Course a year ago. Do I need to upgrade that course to this 2017 version?
Patrick on Mar 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Just log into the course and you will have the most current program.

Have the issues been addressed about the quizzes to matching up with the videos?
Jon Q. on Sep 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have not had an issue with questions not corresponding to the videos. In other words, the quizzes match the videos, so I guess it has been fixed.
What items other than the course will I need to get the most out of it (the course)?
A shopper on Nov 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The course is complete. If you are looking for an additional item I would recommend taking a look at our deluxe kit item 4100A.
Can the "Learn To Fly Couse" be used for 2 people in the same family? My son and I are planning to take the course. Is it possible to buy one course & both my son and I use it?
J V on Oct 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can both use the course, however only one person is able to receive the endoresement for the FAA written course.
Does this course cover talking to ATC in enough detail? I am a new student pilot and the thing that intimidates me the most is ATC, and I just want to make sure this course could help me with that (as well as everything else). Thanks
A shopper on Aug 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This course covers the basic. We do have a VFR Communications course that go into a little more detail.
I currently have the pilots handbook of aeronautical knowledge and Airplane Flying Handbook. Will I need to purchase other books or products to go along with the Sportys Private Pilot Online Training curriculum? I'm trying to decide if I should get the kit since I already have two of the books.
Thanks
G
Pamela G on Apr 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The only other book that would be needed would be the current FAR/AIM.
Can you log into this from different computers? EX: like my work computer at the office as well as my home computer? or do you download it directly onto a single computer?

What’s the difference between this 2018 course and the DVD course? They’re both the same price.
Jesse B on Nov 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The online 2018 course provides HD video and includes the app version as well. The content of the course is the same in both formats.
How much data is consumed by the online training, either per lesson, per typical month, or in total? My current plan with my ISP allows me a limited number of GB of data per month, and then I get either overage charges or slower service. So, I'm concerned about the data consumption I would experience. I'm trying to decide if this more up-to-date online training package would be a better fit, or if I should go with the older DVD package instead.
Darrell K on Nov 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would recommend using the iPad or Android app and downloading all of the videos. The file size is listed under each, and if you did this at a cafe or somewhere else you wouldn't be working against your data quota.

My college-aged niece would like to learn to fly. I've held and renewed my CFI-I/MEI certification for almost 20 years, but I'm not really as up to speed as I need to be. I've been flying Part 121 stuff almost exclusively for the last 18 years. My hope is that I can stay a chapter ahead of my niece and get myself up to speed on new regs and GA technology while helping her along. Can we legally share a single iPad subscription or do I need to buy one for each of us? Thanks in advance!

BEST ANSWER: Our online learn to fly courses uses some of the books, ie FAR/AIM and ACS standards. The other reference materials are the FAA books: the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, the Airplane Flying Handbook and the Aviation Weather book. These are recommended only, so you could still use it with ASA books.
