The first premium wireless aviation headset

For pilots looking the clean up cockpit clutter without sacrificing premium features and performance, the cable-free convenience of Tango is the answer. The first premium wireless aviation headset, Tango delivers outstanding noise cancellation and renowned Lightspeed comfort, in addition to full Bluetooth integration and a brilliantly conceived user interface.

Lightspeed Link. At the heart of Tango is Lightspeed Link. Developed by Lightspeed engineers to ensure the reliable communication pilots demand, Lightspeed Link is not Bluetooth or WiFi, but incorporates existing technologies chosen for both signal reliability and audio quality for the aviation environment. The Lightspeed Link connection is so robust, as many as six Tango headsets can be operated in the same aircraft, letting everyone onboard experience the true freedom of wireless flight.

Panel interface. The panel interface is the vital hub of the Lightspeed Link system, routing communication between the headset, the intercom, and auxiliary devices. Wrapped in an attractive and durable case, it houses the lower cable, which is adjustable to 31 inches. Weighing just under 9 ounces and with multiple mounting points, no upper cables, and critical controls located on the headset, the panel interface can be mounted conveniently and securely in any aircraft.

21st century power. In yet another Lightspeed first, Tango is the first aviation headset powered by rechargeable lithium ion batteries, a power source trusted in countless critical applications. Lightspeed's rechargeable lithium ion batteries deliver twelve hours of continuous operation while offering earth and wallet friendly reusability in a compact size.

Charging. The Tango dual-port wall charger can quickly charge both the headset and panel interface batteries at the same time, providing 70% charge in less than an hour and a full charge in two hours. The batteries can also be charged while the headset is in use or easily replaced on the go. The batteries for the headset and panel interface are interchangeable, and spare batteries can be purchased separately.

Built-in redundancy. The panel interface also stores the backup cable, instantly available for uninterrupted communication, in the event the batteries become depleted.

Active Noise Reduction. Outstanding quiet Tango delivers the advanced noise cancellation you expect from Lightspeed.

Remarkable comfort. Tango features plush ear seals with large openings and nearly 10 square inches of surface area for a better seal and greater distribution of side pressure.

Staff PIREP

Mark Wiesenhahn"One of the most popular questions that we used to get was, "When will there be a good wireless headset?" Finally, we can say that the Lightspeed has done it. The Lightspeed Tango headset is a great quality ANR headset with all the premium features you'd expect PLUS wireless technology. We love that it's the familiar Sierra style platform for comfort but adds all the best features pilots want without cables."

Plus: No Wires!

Plus: Ships pre-paired with control hub so it's simple and easy to use

Plus: ANR, cell phone interface and Bluetooth music

Minus: You have to charge two more batteries before flying

Which cable do I need?

Most headsets come in multiple cable configurations. Choosing the right one is pretty easy, it just depends on what type of aircraft you fly:

  • Battery powered, twin plugs - this is by far the most common style, with separate microphone and headphone plugs (so-called PJ plugs). Almost every airplane ever built has these two plugs in the panel, so these headsets are universal. The only downside is that, for ANR headsets, you will need to use batteries to power the headset.
  • Aircraft powered, 6-pin plug - the second most popular style, sometimes called the "LEMO plug," requires no batteries since it is powered by the panel. This is convenient, but it does require the 6-pin plug to be installed in the panel. While many newer airplanes come with this option, most older airplanes do not. For these applications, you'll need to have your avionics shop wire in the plug - not a big job, but not something pilots can do on their own.
  • Helicopter plug - helicopters use a single, shorter plug (that is not compatible with airplanes). This is not like the 6-pin plug above, however, since an ANR helicopter headset will still need batteries. The only confusing part is that some helicopters also have a 6-pin (or LEMO) plug. In these helicopters, there are two different single plug connections.

Headset plug versionsWhen in doubt, we recommend buying the battery powered, twin plug model. This is the most universal option, and will work in almost any airplane. If you have a 6-pin plug in your airplane or you plan to install one, the aircraft powered model is a nice option.

A little bigger than expected on both the head set and panel interface "the banana". This is my 2nd unit.
I purchased these because of no wires to mess with in the cockpit, had a long flight of 5+ hours and head set was still very comfortable.

Testing: I've had the product through about 45 hours of helicopter use with frequent donning/doffing and transport.
Packaging: The packaging and case are fantastic for permanent employment, comes with dual USB plug and cords, but uses standard USB type B cables which are easily replaced.
Function: A cursory glance over the instructions is all you need to get operating with this headset. Tap a button on the receiver it's on, tap on the headset and it's on, they connect automatically and noise cancelling switches on. Too easy. I can still hear the engine though quite noticeably dampened, however in the event it were to change pitch or cease functioning I have no doubt it would be audibly detectable (for those worried about that aspect).
Fit: Worn it with glasses, with hat, and both, unbelievable comfort. Never had any problem at all. I usually run very hot and headsets produce serious sweat quickly, not with this one. Being cordless and comfortable I've walked away from the aircraft several times with it still on and not realized I hadn't removed it. Expands to fit large heads and can be used with either left or right side mic.
Durability: Unfortunately I don't have enough time with the headset to answer this question. My expectations are 3 years of use, however I believe one drop from height could seriously damage it (it's plastic after all). The things that make it light and comfortable also give it a fragile feel unfortunately. The foam and leather ear pads feel like superb quality and I expect they will last.
Battery life: I haven't encountered any issues and I believe the companies time claims. It's quite easy and fast to charge and with removable batteries you can use an eternal charger (not included) and swap if you're flying +8hours. In the event you run low on power you can pull the cord from the control unit and connect to your headset which I've tried once while flying and found it simple to do (even with gloves on).
Overall: The more I use it the more I'm impressed with the engineering and "intelligence" of the unit. The other day I switched off the headset and not the control unit and 10 minutes later when I checked the control unit had switched itself off preserving battery, which I thought was great. I've never had any comms issue at all, giving and receiving instructions is a dream in busy airspace with this headset. The app works flawlessly as a voice recorder.

Good judgment good purchase

I have used my headset for over 50 hours now once I learned how to pair the headset WOW. It opened up a new world to audio, I am deaf in one ear and pervious head sets where an issue because they hurt and we're stereo so I missed some sound. I went to a insert headset but again background sound was hard to deal with. Tango changed that. I'm not as tired after three to four hours of flight. I don't realize they are on.I can move around without the pull of a cord and I don't have worry about them getting caught in controls or my arms when I move.
I like the sound and the freedom of movement these headsets offer. Thanks Tango for making me free.

Tango headset - very pleased

Recommended

Have been flying for several months now with Tango. Open cockpit gyroplane. First noticed better noise isolation / cancellation, and higher volume and better fidelity with music - compared with Bose A20 we had been using. At first had to be careful to turn things off, or not accidentally turn on the headset when storing it - to have charged headset battery next flight. Some students would hold the on/0ff button for more than 2 seconds to turn it on - turning off the auto off function. Know better now. Much more convenient in open and tight cockpit than having chords all over. Permanently mounted panel interface with permanent power to keep battery charged in panel interface. Bluetooth works VERY well - have been conducting phone, text and email business in flight - voice to text on link to iPhone. Ear cups are larger than stock Bose A20 - so more comfortable on long flights not pressing on ears. On Bose A20, had installed larger ear cups (Oregon Air) to make more comfortable, but tended to get squeal with noise cancellation with larger ear cups. Tango is more comfortable on long flights. A couple of issues - Tango width of headband not easily fit in helmets we wear - tight but doable. Have to be careful to not yell too loud in microphone, with other noise, seems to saturate occasionally and cut out intercom. I use these plugged into Sigtronics stereo intercom. With high noise and wind environment of open cockpit, typically install larger foam muff and leather cover to eliminate extraneous noise - have had to do on any microphone - Tango is no different. Best thing may be the price - compared to Bose!

10 hour flights without removall

Recommended

Four of us at the same company bought the Lightspeed Tango at the same time. We have worked it for more than a month now and had no problems. I wear the headset for up to 10 hours at a time and it is comfortable enough to not take it off the entire flight. The convenience of not having to take it off to get up and go to the back of the jet is huge. We are flying in a communication sensitive environment and keeping the headset on is sometimes critical. A couple of times I have had an echo or a light clicking, but if I turn the headset off and back on it always goes away. This is the most comfortable, quiet and convenient headset I have ever warn. I would highly recommend it to everyone who uses a headset. I have not mentioned the blue tooth connection, because almost all new headsets have that option now. It has worked fine.

Since you need batteries in both sections, is there any real value for the LEMO plug?
Blake P on Feb 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes this comes in a LEMO plug. The headset would need the batteries but the control box would not.
I thought that with one base unit, you could have up to 5 headsets connected. Maybe I misunderstood. Do you need to buy the base unit with each headset?
Dawn H on Jan 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can have multiple headsets in a single cockpit without interference, but you must have a single headset paired to a single panel unit.
Is there a 12 volt charger available for the batteries??
A shopper on Dec 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is not one included. I briefly looked on google for any, and there aren't 12V DC chargers market for it. However, the output of the wall charger that comes with it is 5V and 2.4A. 5V is pretty standard for USB and only a few cell phone chargers (one Samsung model that I know of) deviate from that. So what you can do is go to best buy or amazon and just buy a 12V DC cellphone charger that is 5V and 2.4A or less. The fewer amps, the slower it will charge and too low may not even charge them at all. Too many amps, and you can damage the batteries, so keep it below 2.4A. The one I have from best buy that I keep in my truck for my cellphone actually has two USB ports so I could charge both of the headset's batteries in the airplane with it. Its a pretty cheap solution if you ever need to charge them in the airplane.
I have a Zulu 2 in like new condition. Is there a trade in program for the Tango?
Daniel on Oct 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not at this time, but eBay has a pretty good market for used headsets.
Are they TSO'd?
