Cons: No mention that I could see that there is a fee for updating maps and info during the year. Cost is approx $100.00 per year and I believe you still must have current paper maps in the plane, not an issue but would have been nice to know when purchasingJuly 22, 2014Durability4 / 5Reliability4 / 5Performance4 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value3 / 5Pros: easy to use, portable Cons: expensive for bottom of line gps. no a/c charger..June 24, 2014Durability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Pros: Typical Garmin software, similar to the Garmin Pilot app and my Garmin 496. Nothing new to learn. Larger screen than my 496 and no buttons (nice touch screen) to get stiff in the winter time. Subscription is only $99, much less than my 496. Cons: The Aera 500 does not do Safe Taxi. Very happy with this purchase as it is packed with features found on much more expensive units. Great value.May 20, 2014Durability4 / 5Reliability4 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use2 / 5Value3 / 5Cons: Flight plan waypoints can't be added from the map view. No 'rubber banding'. Operation of unit is not very intuitive and studying the manual is a necessity.March 11, 2013Durability4 / 5Reliability3 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value4 / 5Pros: Lots of functions , color , relatively easy to use , great beginning GPS Cons: Should be supplied with a wall charger , more sensitive touch screen , it's resists efforts to drag the display A sense of security to have ! It's fun , strong and practicalNovember 30, 2012Durability4 / 5Reliability4 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value3 / 5Pros: Very easy to use Cons: Didnt have the car maps for South America, and doesnt have many airports or small stripsOctober 16, 2012Durability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value5 / 5Pros: Small, reasonably priced, intuitive touch screen, automotive data included. Cons: Very short battery life (2-3 hrs), no dedicated buttons so extra presses are needed for common tasks compared to 296. Compared to my aging 296 the Aera 500 screen is no brighter, no significant increased aero capability, battery life is about 1/4, common inquiries such as airport freq/runways and elapsed flight time take extra keystrokes because there are no dedicated keys. You'll need a spare battery if like mine your plane has no power outlet. Odd that you can't charge it with the outside mini-usb. It is very compact though and a lot cheaper than my 296 was. Locks onto GPS satellites faster too. If the battery would go 5 hours at full brightness I would have given it 5 stars.June 28, 2012Durability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value4 / 5Pros: Easy to use. Comes with everything that I needed. Worked well in Robinson R22 Helicopter. Rebate did persuade me in my decision. Cons: Very Expensive. Garmin produces great products. I own all Garmin GPS's for work and now aviation.May 27, 2012Durability5 / 5Reliability5 / 5Performance5 / 5Ease Of Use5 / 5Value5 / 5Pros: Clear, easy to use format. Better than another brand I bought last year, much better. Cons: A bit hard to see with sun glasses on but not a big problem. Garmin is the way to go! They are pilot friendly.May 27, 2012Durability4 / 5Reliability4 / 5Performance4 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value4 / 5Pros: Very easy to use. It has good signal reception with its internal antenna. Overall, I have been pleased with its performance. Cons: The screen becomes somewhat The Garmin 500 is a BIG improvement over the Garmin Pilot III that I have been using for years. The touch screen is easy to use even in afternoon turbulence. The size of the unit is just right for my Wittman Tailwind insturment panel.April 12, 2012
