Through playback one can build his/her skill in VFR communications. The program does put you in the VFR environment with respect to the phraseogoly being explained. ConsThe main drawback I find with this product is the lack of user interaction with the software. There is a lot of information on this DVD, and because of that the commentator must explain many concepts in a short amount of time: this results in me having to replay segments over and over. | Covers all the bases in VFR communication. Clear and high-quality video and audio. Good reinforcement from what I've learned from my CFII and textbook materials. Cons The course needs more "real world"--not staged--communications. [I wish all pilots and controllers talked as clearly and understandably as in this DVD!] Also, it could use more examples for each scenario and more "real world" ATC transmissions to get better prepared for the things I'm already hearing out there. Maybe there should be a *Basic* VFR Communications course with the basics of non-towered communications and *heavy emphasis* on typical towered field operations: ATIS, ground control, tower, and pattern communications. I'd like a variety of communications: standard--and even unusual--ATC/pilot requests, different talking styles, fast chatter, slow chatter, etc. What a helicopter pilot really sounds like on the radio. What to say when you're confused or don't understand ATC. Perhaps even some hints at overcoming "mike fright". How about a "real world" ramp to take-off radio conversation with a return from the practice area, pattern entry, landing, and taxi back to the ramp conversation as well? |
