Battery Life, Clear speaker at higher volume, Range, key pad, simplicity.

    Cons

    Key pad doesn't light up.

    General Comments

The A14 has the quality that Icom is known for. The new lithium battery technoligy is what drew me to this transceiver. You can now actually go all day long or a weekend of average use on a single charge, awesome! The speaker is high enough quality that communications is clear at the higher volume settings. You can either change the frequency by scrolling up/down via the key pad or punch the frequency in direct. A definite "Bang for the Buck". The only thing that would make this a 10 out of 10 is if the key pad lit up with the LCD.

    Pros

The IC-A14 has the quality of construction that I have come to expect from ICOM based on my experience with their earlier hand held versions. It is compact and the keypad is easy to use. The light is easy to turn on and off even when "task saturated" in flight.

    Cons

I had some difficulty setting up the channel memory until I figured out that I should disregard the weather channel instructions when reading the process for normal comm channels.

The unit does not come with a charger plug that you can use to recharge in flight (option at extra cost). It does have the "home" charger included.

The squelch is raised or lowered in steps by push buttons, and I slightly favor the old rotary squelch adjustments.

    General Comments

This is a great tranceiver and I would recommend it to anyone.

    Pros

Excellent range (10-15 miles on the ground if they're in the air, 25+ if you're in the air), very clear signal.

    Cons

Bit difficult to hear without deafening you if you're in a noisy cockpit, but that's about it.

    General Comments

Only had the chance to try this in the air once, but it worked very well. Battery life seems to be as stated, right around 18 hours depending on how much you use it. Overall, if the only thing you need is a com, it's definitely a good deal.

    Pros

DURABLE. i'm a lineman and i can't tell you how many times i've dropped it or gotten gas on it. LOUD - i can hear the freq even while parking single turboprops. Cradle style charger (not a plugin like the older icoms) is handy.

on the gound at the airport i can pick up people as far as 10 miles or so out on a decent day.

    Pros

Excellent audio! Crisp, clear and loud. I'm also a Ham Radio operator and I really like this unit. Very tough and water resistant. A lithium ion battery to boot!

    Cons

The manual could be a little clearer in some areas if you're not used to this type of radio, especially with regards to the duplex programming mode.

    General Comments

I've used a number of handheld radios of various manufacturers over the years and this has to rank right up there, especially in quality and value.

    Pros

Easy to switch between commonly used frequencies and just as easy to key in different frequencies. Scan function enables me to monitor several frequencies- when it started to quieten down I was able to follow an aircraft going from approach to tower without having to press a button.

    Cons

    Sometimes the scan stops unexpectedly.

    General Comments

To charge the battery you'll have to set it in the cradle to which the adapter is plugged. This makes it bulkier to carry the charger around. But the cradle also provides a very good, sturdy base for charging.

Haven't really used it too much, but I'm totally happy with it. The reception of this is quite far, even on the ground. Seems pretty solid, and has an excellent rated battery although I haven't gotten to test it. The directions aren't confusing like many people have said.
