The IC-A6 is the latest COM from Icom, featuring a large, rubber keypad and easy to read display for one-handed operation in the cockpit. Backlit keypad and display stays on until you turn it off—helpful for night flying. Flip-Flop channel recall function stores the last 10 channels used for instant switching. Other features:

Easy to switch to optional backup alkaline battery pack (6AA). Has built in side tone when using headset. Standard BNC antennae works with Sporty's suction cup antennae extension. ConsRequires push to talk accessory to transmit using headset microphone. Does not transmit when using AC/DC power cord. You must squeeze hard on bottom of antennae to capture BCN connector when attaching/detaching antennae. General CommentsA solid quality product with a few idiosyncrasies. Transmission is defeated when using the AC external charger (DV 11v). This is by design. Although it ships with a headset adapter, it does not ship with a push to talk button (3.5 mm). As such, if you plug in the headset without a PTT adapter you must use the built in radio mic. Good news is that using the radio mic does activate the side tone in the headset (adjustable 0-10). Antennae requires solid squeeze to capture BCN connector. |

General CommentsThe AM aeronautical frequencies are close to the 2 meter amateur radio band. The equipment available for these operators is way better. Icom makes radios that are smaller, more durable, with features such as extended band recieve, battery monitors, better sound quality and sensitivity. This equipment gets the job done, but I wish Icom would make tranceivers for aeronautical use similar to the amateur products. |

I ordered the ICom A6 with a push to talk switch. They called me and said I ordered the wrong pust to talk switch. I was surprised because I thought there was only one that would fit but I was not at a computer and I asked if they had the correct PTT - yes they did - so I asked them to substitute that. The radio arrived - no PTT - but a head set adaptor (one of which is included with the radio). So I called and they insisted I ordered the headset adaptor -finally they said they would send the PTT and something to send the headset adaptor back. I did get a photocopy of a mailing label to send the headset adaptor back but no PTT - called again and was told I have to wait until the headset adaptor comes back - I tried to explain that sporty's made the mistake - but either the person couldn't understand or didn't want to understand - anyway I canceled the PTT and told the woman I would not be doing business with Sporty's again. 5 calls is way too much when Sporty's made the error. |
