Product description: The most important hour in your logbook “Pilots don’t crash airplanes because they want to,” says Collins, but even experienced pilots do. The best way to stay out of an accident report, he suggests, is to understand and manage the risks inherent in flying—every time you get in an airplane. In this completely new book, Collins shares some personal insights learned from his lifetime of flying in general aviation airplanes. You’ll learn: • The three word emergency checklist every pilot should know • Why a pilot’s thought processes matter more than his experience • Why Collins decided to stop flying as pilot in command—on his own terms • The unique challenges (and rewards) of night flying • Why some airplane types have poor accident records • How to manage technology in the cockpit, and when it’s doing more harm than goodThroughout, Collins uses real life examples from his vast experience to illustrate each point. This book is a must-have for any pilot who wants to make their next hour a safer one. Approx. 210 pages, soft cover.

    Pros

As with any Collins book, it is packed with good info.

    Cons

Not everything in the book is new. Some of the stories can be found in his other books or videos. But they are informative, which is probably why they are repeated here.

    General Comments

Overall a really good book. A must have for any Collins fan.

    Cons

    Cheap paperback for 25 bucks....

    General Comments

I could have gleaned the same info from the archives of Flying Magazine.Collins always makes for interesting and helpful reading. The price I paid for a paperback book of rehashed columns from Flying Mag was not worth it.It says nothing new for 25 bucks. These are things I've read in his columns. $7.95 tops.

    Pros

Another great book by Richard L. Collins. Easy to read as if you're in the hanger sitting on stools under the wing of his P210. The language is very laid back (another great trait of Arkansas natives)and easy to understand. If you've flown for any length of time, all of the hints, tips, tricks and don't-do's may seem common sense, but as he shoes, we sometime forget the fundamentals.

    Cons

This book is very much an extension of his previous books and Air Facts Videos. In fact, you can tell that much of the Air Facts Videos may have been scripted from this book (or vice versa). If you've seen all the videos, or read all of his previous books, you might not get much out of this one.
Book does a good job of describing the conditions of flight to avoid, but I thouht that it fell a little short on how to get out of those same situations.

    General Comments

If you haven't read a Richard Collins book or seen his Air Facts videos, then this is a definite must buy. I suggest reading a chapter of the book and then download the 20min corresponding Air Facts video for backing up the lesson.

    Cons

I am a huge Richard Collins fan and loved his column in Flying Magazine but was very disappointed by the book. Paying $20+ for a large print, 174 pg paperbook book is not a good value. Most of the chapters amount to reprints of stories that Richard has recounted many times. The book is advertised as having new insights into the "next hour" but is really just old information. Too bad.

I'll read it again in a year. I hope Flying encourages Mr. Colling to pen special article from time to time.
