    Cons

Takes a few hours to learn all the functions, but overall a great radio.

Search / Scan are very intuitive, which is why I bought it. Screen is large for these old eyes to use without glasses!!

    Cons

Haven't had too much trouble figuring out button sequence. As in all electronic devices, it does take some practice to get it correct.

    General Comments

Volume / Squelch work great! Overall, works as expected. 'Tips & Tricks' would be my recommendation to get up to speed quickly.

    SP-400
    Pros

Does everything as advertised and better. Haven't had it long enough, but for a backup it far exceeded my expectations.

    Cons

    Can't find one yet,

    General Comments

There is a learning curve that you want to practice on the ground and not rely on it being intuitive. Doesn't take long to master it.

    Thank God for this radio!
    Pros

Very easy to use! 100% the best radio I have had. Sooo much more user friendly than my ICOM & more recently the YAESU-720.

    Cons

Kind of cheap, but who needs metal? All plastic makes it lighter anyway.

    General Comments

Right out of the box I put batteries in, put in a known frequency,....bam! Worked just like that. THIS IS WHAT YOU WOULD NEED IN AN EMERGENCY.

I previously bought (and am trying to sell cheep, the YAESU FTA-720. As you know this was the Mac Daddy. I read the instructions , forgot, read again...I could never get this thing to put in a frequency without re reading!!!!! Tried again on my last trip and immediately ordered Sporty's. I tested my Wife. Same great results from Sporty's.

    Cons

AA batteries are cumbersome heavy and costly. A reasonably priced lithium rechargeable battery is in order.

    Not that impressed
    Pros

As far as I can tell the product does what Sporty's advertises

    Cons

The radio is large, shaped like a brick, and old-fashioned. You have to pay another $100 for the rechargeable battery. The whole package becomes quite expensive and heavy

    General Comments

For less than $300 you can buy the Yaesu radio which includes a rechargeable battery, is much more compact, and worked fine on the radio check we did with it. I returned the SP-400 and opted for the Yaesu (also available from Sporty's).

Rugged Body, Easy to use, Good Backup
    Pros

Easy to use. Can use alkaline batteries or optional battery pack. Easy to read display. Lots of functions so it'll take practice and use of the users manual, but still pretty intuitive functions.

    Cons

Screen needs a screen protector out of the box (hence the 3-star durability rating). Invest in a screen protector immediately if they don't correct this oversight. The screen attracts small scratches like cat hair to furniture.

    General Comments

I swapped the antenna for an expandable one for better range. I fly between a few airports within a 15 mile radius of each other. This allows me to monitor any freq from any of them. My only issue is having no screen protector out of the box.

Would be great if it worked. Poor Support as well.
    Pros

    Easy to use

    Cons

Used the radio about 20 times as my plane has no radio installed. Now the PTT does not work and all that comes in is static. Very unreliable. And the 5 year warranty is a joke. Repair and return process. We all know how that goes. Opt for a better quality radio as well as a company that will stand behind their product (Not Sportys).

    General Comments

Most expensive product on the market and it does not even come with accessories like a rechargeable battery as well as headset adapter cable. Steer clear of this as well as Sportys customer support.

    Sporty's Response

Sporty's SP-400 is backed by 5 year warranty. In order to fix a radio, we do need to get it back. We process the returns/repairs the same day we receive them. Often times, we are able to repair the radio the same day it is received.

    good radio and back up.
    Pros

Its nice to have a back up radio stack in my flight bag. No cons. People do not understand that this is a flight radio. That means that it uses frequencies in the air craft band. So on the ground it doesn't seem to.perform well. But the design is meant for in-the-air -use. ...you will receive transmissions over a longer range at higher altitude above obstacles. I like being able to tune to VORS and ILS. and call me old fashion but out here in Dallas there are a lot of NDBS so I would call that the only detractor.I recommend getting the headset adaptor. Which btw worked good with my set of 'rugged ' aviation head phones.

    Cons

    None I can find.

    General Comments

Remember getting ground, atis and CLDL are all local frequencies to the field so you may not get those sitting on the couch at home. But I was pulling ATIS a good ten miles away from ADDISON (ADS) while driving in my hemi and having it laying on the passenger seat..(well outside of the class Delta) ..And I get ADDISON tower sitting on my couch in Little Elm. Id say bout 25 miles away. KEEP in MIND ATIS ,GROUND AND CLDL are short range ...its nice to have memory storage of frequencies too. The last frequency button is a nice touch.
