Good refresher or to learn some new tricks

A great collection of information on real world flying. Very good production quality and enough actual flying footage to keep the viewer engaged in the subject matter. Richard Collins casual narrative style is very accessible and suits the subject matter quite well. The content is suitable for new pilots wanting more than the content contained in the required FAA study material and is a great refresher for experienced pilots.

very good product.
Just a little 'dry' and 'mundane', that's all...

I'm a new pilot with my first plane (182Q). It has some upgraded electronics, 530/430 gps, engine monitor, etc. For me, the tapes have been great! They cover weather, gps's single engine, multi engine, IFR and more. All area's that I wish to continue my training. For a new pilot I have found the DVD's very helpful.

Good advice on most all subjects relevant for GA.

Would like more video footage and fewer repetitions of scenes.

I have watched 2 out of the 9 DVDs I bought. Worth every single cent I paid for. Entertaining and enlightning.

I'm glad I got them all they reminded alot that I forgot and I learned some things I did'nt know. Thank so much!!

Lots of different subject matter covered.

My two big gripes with the set as a whole are:

- Different voices and hosts are needed. Richard Collins
is good and you should keep him, but add some variety.
Different aviation folks have different perspectives.

- The weather flying video that Richard Collins does is OK. There are lots of suggestions, but not a lot of explanation WHY. Weather phenomena needs to be better explained, including reasons WHY weather does what it does. For example, the coriolis force was never mentioned in the entire video, yet it controls the rotation of highs and lows.

Overall I'd give the videos a 6.5/10. They are a bit hit or miss. When they miss, it's because I was hoping for more substance to the material, more meat.

Turning just 71 years old on 12/26/08, & w/ a young man's spirit wanting to learn how to fly this year, I'm confident that these DVD's will be most helpful. I fully intend to purchase the "Private Pilot" series once I pass my medical.

Collins makes these both educational and fun to watch. They contain good technical content, excellent in-flight video, and clear audio. Collins has a calm and reassuring narrative style, even adds occasional humor. Very enjoyable.

These are DVDs - it will be years before I know about their durability or reliability. But they are off to a good start!

The best part is that (unlike unfolding events in the cockpit of a plane in flight) you can pause and/or rewind particular scenes to be sure that you understand what was explained. You can also pause the scene to take a longer look if there is something visual to take a closer look at, or ponder for a moment, such as a section of a GPS operating manual, an instrument cluster showing a particular aircraft attitude and configuration, or the display of a particular instrument (such as a GPS or autopilot) when set in a particular way or used for a particular purpose.

I have now watched about 15 of the 33 titles. All were excellant and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the series. Each title was worth about 5 to 10 hours of in-cockpit experience with a CFI/CFII. The programs provide an excellant, and very inexpensive way, to gain significant experience at understanding how various pieces of equipment function, how to interpret what they say, how to use them safely and to fullest advantage, and to learn which stick and rudder skill to apply when.

Great video series that is really practical and covers a lot of subjects. As a recent private pilot, they help fill a lot of the experience gaps.

Considering the costs of flying, for the price of about three hours of dual time with an instructor, you get a vast amount of information given by one of the top instructors in the whole country. I've been teaching flying for 29 years and when I get a chance to see to how Dick Collins thinks and approaches aviation, I listen up. You have to be knowledgeable and proficient to be a good pilot but to really feel safe and professional and actually use your airplane, the most important aspect is not how well you fly but how well you think about flying. You will learn a lot from Mr Collins. I did and it's a great set to own and watch over and over. I'm going to buy the advanced weather set next. Thanks Dick and Sporty's for such an excellent product!

Perhaps it is my player,or just the operator (me) but on my laptop, I had trouble stopping the dvd and rewinding when I wanted to hear an important statement or comment over again without watching the entire program. A couple of times, the video stopped and it took me several seconds to realize that the audio had run ahead of the video.

Rod Machado was talking about wanting to learn to be a good magician once. He said the secret was to find a really good magician and simply do like he did, copy his moves and mimic his behaviors. If you can try and mimic a really good pilot and instructor like Dick Collins, you will profit from his wisdom which I promise you, wasn't gained easily or in a few years...try a lifetime of experience which he gives to you in a casual, informative way that is definitely not boring like some ground school tape. The IFR section is priceless to those whom have little actual experience in weather. I'm recommeding this series to everyone I fly with, old and new pilots alike will enjoy it. Just go buy it!
