Product description: Accepted for FAA Wings Credit click here Buckle up and join Sporty’s on three exciting instrument flights featuring pilots of various experience levels flying and communicating in the IFR system. More than just a rehash of basic radio procedures, this program gives today’s instrument pilot a real-world look at IFR communications through all phases of flight in a variety of airspace. The action-packed flights take place in a Cessna Skyhawk equipped with VOR navigation, a Garmin G1000-equipped Cessna Skylane and a twin-engine Piper Aztec with an MFD including GPS, traffic and datalink weather. We’ll visit several airports, including rural non-towered airports and the high-density LaGuardia Airport (KLGA) in New York. Experience the unique challenges each flight presents and see how the pilots effectively manage all available resources to complete each mission. Also included are sections designed to refresh your knowledge of basic IFR communications, plus a review of communication procedures during emergencies. IFR Communications will make you a better instrument pilot regardless of experience and help make your next flight smoother and safer. Dual disc (DVD video on one side, audio CD on the other) allows you to listen to the entire program in your car, or watch it on a TV or computer. (49 min.) Outside the United States? - Sporty's DVDs have all DVD regions enabled and play on almost all DVD players (NTSC or PAL); consult your owner's manual for more information. Closed Captioning not functional on PAL DVD players. Attention International Students! Sporty's IFR Communications DVD has printed subtitles or captions (sometimes called under-titles). These captions are very useful for students whose first language is not English, as many students more effectively assimilate new material when it's presented in both verbal and written form.

    Pros

Helps with the communications basics when flying IFR within the system in a complex flight plan as well as in a basic setup (VOR only) equipped aircraft

    Cons

This doesn't really help a new pilot who is not used to the system, dealing with higher-stress communications as I had hoped. I was hoping a sort of ABC's of communication starting from the beginning, to the take off-en-route then approach in a more direct approach. This splits up the three different scenarios together, switching between one flight to another showing the similarities and differences of each, but never really focused on a start to finish overview.

    General Comments

Really not all that bad. I learned a lot from this. I'm not a "born with avgas in my blood" pilot. I fly rarely, but am going through IFR training to increase my flying windows a bit to accommodate for longer and more complex flights in the future. This was a good start on how to work within the system and after a few reviews of this, I feel more confident in talking with ATC.

Don't get this as an end-all-be-all product as it will disappoint, but it will be a good assistant. Take several flights to high-traffic locations a few times with an instructor and you'll get far more out of those situations.

Liked the way the video was put together. Different types if IFR equipment and flight situations.

    Cons

Not enough information around the general aviation IFR equipment. Used alot of modern equipment most general aviation pilots still don't have due to cost.

    General Comments

Overall a good video refresher and informational series. A little bit pricey

    Cons

It would be better if the audio side and the video side were better distguished. Several years ago I purchased an audio tape of an IFR flight from Claremont to Chicago. I was expecting the new video to be as good. Instead I got three flights all mixed together which made it difficult to know which pilot I was with. For example, I was following the pilot going to Bowling Green and then the pilots are talking about the problems of getting into New York. None of the pilots actually filled an IFR flight plan! If they did it was never recorded. The announcer said that to go into La Guardia a permit was needed and he said to check the FAR/AIM for how to do that.

    General Comments

Why not say, "Look in FAR/AIM section -----" Instead you don't help any pilot going to any city that requires a time slot but make each of us look up the info ourselves. You could at least given a hint. The program would have been more helpful if you had followed each pilot from beginning flight planning to landing at destination seperately. That way if I had to stop the program and come back later I would know where I was. There should have been more recording of the dialogue between ATC and pilot with an ongoing explanation of what was happening and why.

    Pros

This is a good introduction of what IFR "looks" like to the pilot interested in becoming IFR rated.
This CD/DVD is a good combination for the individual on the go. This should be an option for all training DVD's.

    Cons

A basic copy of the IFR routes for the three flight scenerios depicted in the DVD would be a nice addition to this product.

    Pros

You get to hear some comunications on American airports.

    Cons

I was expecting a lot more than what i received, for what i paid i was expecting at least 1.5 hrs. of teaching comunications, phraseology, and more stuff. i bought this DVD cuz im from outside the U.S and honestly i was really disapointed.becouse i got a 44 min. DVD focused more on weather on a cross country flight.

    General Comments

Its over pricced, extremly short and not 100% focused on IFR comunications, if you want a DVD showing how to get a weather brefing on a cross country flight get this DVD. Specially if you are a non native english speaker this is not a big help.
