GARMIN Is wonderful. This unit has a great display and if mounted on the yoke with the included mounting bracket, it will not obstruct the six-pack view. It has so many options, it takes time to get proficient, but if you are moving from another Garmin unit (like a 496 in my case) you will find it pretty easy. Heavy duty construction .. it will last forever (or until the next coolest version comes out ;>)

    Cons

    Pros

Awesome unit. I was used to the G-1000 so getting set up with this was pretty straight forward. Had to call Garmin with a question about updating but was simple after they told me how, When item was received, the yoke mount and screws were missing, I called Sporty's and they send one out no questions asked right away, I even got a letter from the President of the company making sure everything was ok. I always buy from them and will continue to in the future. I XM Wx is great and I even added radio to the 696 so I can listen to the Howard Stern show while flying.

    Cons

The only downside I feel is the price but as with anything in aviation, its expensive. You get what you payt for

We use this in our jet as a backup. We like being able to use the 696 to get metars, tafs, and approach plates without changing screens on our panel mounted units.

    Cons

    It never worked

    General Comments

I regret giving a bad reveiew, but my 696 began freezing up with an online update and then would not boot up in the plane. It worked enough for me to navigate within it but I never got to use it. Update was done per instructions. I'm paying a couple hundred for shipping back to Garmin and losing a month of XM fees in addition to my vacation which I spent on the phone with Garmin. I must insure it for shipping and they won't replace it until they get the original back. That's poor and costly service for something that doesn't work from the beginnning.

Looks great and has lots of features. Honestly haven't had it long enough to rate. It comes highly recommended by others

    Cons

The manuals are horrible. Even the web guide is bad. There is no way to download any of the software without calling the company. Even they will admit that.

    General Comments

I am sure that once we learn how to use all of the features wel will be more than pleased as others have been. Garmin really needs to put together manuals and/or web instructions that are easier to use. The phone tech desk is only open during the day M-F. Good thing my husband's secretary had the two hours it took to download the maps etc...

Garmin hits a home run nearly every time. This GPS is as good as it gets, or even better. A little pricey but well worth it.

A little heavy and thick. It will be awesome when they are able to get this squeezed into a package that is at least 50% thinner.

Large screen, easy to use. Nice display features. Comes out of the box ready to use. Good receiver capabilities without use of external antenna.

    Cons

Screen gets hot. Recommend adjusting back lighting to level 8 or 9 out of 10 to keep temps down a little. GPS antenna mail lead broke off first time it was put into unit: this is a weak connection and needs to be improved.

Owners manual is vague in many areas and does not fully show what every function or symbol does on the unit. Fortunately, I have 2200+ hours flying 55 different airplanes and I could figure it out.

    General Comments

I can not rate reliability as it has not flown more than 6 hours in my airplane. I have a hot summer to get through and after some months, I will be able to tell you how reliable it is. Overall, it is a great Garmin product.
