Bluetooth Radio with AVIATION INTERRUPT™

Sporty’s Air Scan Aviation Radio/Scanner gives pilots and aviation buffs two radios in one. With our exclusive Aviation Interrupt feature you can listen to a ball game, talk radio, or music and never miss an aviation transmission. Equipped with Bluetooth, the Air Scan can easily pair to a phone or iPad for playing music from your favorite app. Perfect for your home office, the desk at your FBO, or your workbench in the hangar, the Air Scan is an easy way to monitor aviation traffic while still listening to your favorite music.

Memory

Store up to 10 different frequencies from each tunable source using the Preset feature. This allows you to quickly scroll through your local frequencies without having to type them in every time. The 10 aviation presets are used for Aviation Interrupt feature.

Aviation Interrupt™

While listening to your favorite AM/FM station or Bluetooth/Aux source, the Air Scan silently scans up to 10 preset channels for activity. When a signal is detected on any of these channels it interrupts the music and plays the aviation transmission. When the transmission ends, the Air Scan returns to the music.

Bluetooth/Aux In

Don’t want to listen to FM or AM radio stations? Use the Bluetooth feature to pair your phone or tablet to the radio for listening with your favorite app. You can also use a standard 3.5 aux input cable (sold separately) to plug in your phone or iPad if it has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

External Speaker
Use the 3.5mm headphone jack to connect the Air Scan to external speakers. Here at Sporty's Pilot Shop, we connect an Air Scan to the ramp speakers so linemen never miss a radio call. Also great for surround sound systems or noise canceling headphones.

Package includes Air Scan radio, 100-240V wall plug, telescoping BNC antenna and user guide. Requires wall plug for operation (no batteries).

Air Scan Features:

  • Aviation Interrupt
  • 10 priority aviation memory locations
  • Telescoping antenna with aviation-compatible BNC connector
  • External power jack
  • External speaker jack
  • Auxiliary input jack
  • AM band 520 – 1710 kHz
  • FM band 88 – 108 MHz
  • Aviation Band VHF 117.975 – 137.000 MHz (25 kHz spacing)
  • Bluetooth wireless music streaming
  • Stereo speakers
  • Squelch & volume control knobs

Simplified Programming Instructions

Programming the AirScan radio is similar to programming a car radio. To save a frequency to a preset location:

  1. After turning the Air Scan on, choose the source of the frequency you want to store (AM, FM, or Airband).
  2. Type in the frequency you wish to store.
  3. Press the preset button once to enter into preset mode.
  4. Press and hold the number of preset location where you want to store the frequency.
  5. After holding the number for 2 seconds, the Air Scan will beep and exit preset mode, indicating that the frequency was stored correctly.

To recall a preset frequency:

  1. After turning the Air Scan on, choose the source type of the frequency you want recall (AM, FM, or Airband).
  2. Press the preset button once to enter into preset mode.
  3. Press the number of the preset location you wish to access.
  4. Air Scan will automatically exit preset mode after 3 seconds on inactivity.

Pro Tip:

Program your local frequencies into the 10 preset slots for Airband. Switch the source over to Bluetooth and listen to your favorite music app. Press the Aviation Interrupt button and the Air Scan will interrupt the music to bring you the Airband transmission before switching back to the music.

Works as advertised
I'm not sure what the actual range is, but I pick up very little aviation band transmission. I'm about 7 miles from KARR and pick up most of what I hear from there, although I usually only hear the aircraft talking to KARR tower and not the tower transmissions. Depending on the current approach in use I can occasionally pick up some approach chatter for ORD. But what I do pick up is clear. Easy to use.

Excellent Scanner
I am extremely happy with the radio. Great options at a fantastic price! I compared the unit in my office with my handheld and the handheld had slightly better reception. However, the Bluetooth and other features of the Sporty’s unit far outweighed any reception shortcomings. They truly built this thing to use commercially; From the BNC connector on the back allowing you to run a remote antenna to the external speaker plug it is a very nice unit. I could totally see an FBO playing a radio station over the intercom with the Unicom frequency on the interrupt. I ordered $60 worth of materials on Amazon including; An aircraft scanner antenna, 50ft cable and a BNC adaptor. Now the unit picks up a tower 30 miles away and every radio station in the area.

Simple to use, love the interrupt feature
Given the other reviews, I was a little worried about getting the radio. Upon arrival, I was really impressed with the out-of-box experience. It was super easy to set up. I set 4 local frequencies, paired my phone, and was listening to Spotify while getting transmissions from planes in the pattern. Love it! I'll probably get an external antenna to boost the range, but it's pretty good for a desktop scanner.

Pretty Box with No Reception
This product is pricey and I expected good performance. Very disappointed! I get NO reception In location where $40 home AM-FM and car radios pick up dozens of AM and FM stations, this product gets static but no AM-FM stations.. Aviation band, only receives aircraft directly overhead. Pretty but useless product in my experience

Works well but treat antenna very gingerly.
Radio works well, even in a metal hangar. However, the antenna is very flimsy. The first time I extended and retracted the antenna, it bent and broke. Very disappointing.

So far so good
I wanted a dedicated "Scanner" to listen to local air traffic and ATC when I'm working in the garage. I think the fact you can only scan 10 channels may be a kicker for some people but for my needs it works perfect. I'm able to listen to 2 local airports, App/Dep for the military airspace plus 5 ATC frequencies. Currently I have it connected to a VHF/UHF ham radio vertical antenna on the back of the house but will be adding a air band antenna in the next few weeks. I can hear most aircraft traffic on the ATC channels between the NC Coast and Greensboro, NC (east west) and between Richmond, VA to South Carolina. So far so good, could have been around the $99.99 price point but again it has worked for my needs.

Jury's still out at this time 12-01-17
Received Monday 11/27/17 & used it every nite since. After programming it for FM radio and ATC local Tower & Ground frequencies @ HQZ I've had some issues with the Aviation Interrupt function. With a handheld Rexon RHP-530 scanner as a comparison, I've had periods when the Sporty's Air Scan did not pick up either Tower or Ground unless I put it into the ATC direct function. Last nite the interrupt function didn't work until it had been on for half an hour & then seemed spotty at best. Yes, I'm in a metal hangar, but doors mostly open & radio is near the doors & doesn't affect the RHP-530 reception.

I’m getting lots of static in my garage, but not in my house 30 feet away?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017

Can I use an external antenna with the Air Scan?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Any antenna with a BNC connection will work. Placing an antenna outside of your hangar or house will increase your reception.

Can I pair multiple devices to the Air Scan at once?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Air Scan will only pair to one device at a time. Pairing a second device will override the first device. When the Bluetooth source is selected, the Air Scan will attempt to automatically pair with the most recently paired device.
Can I listen to ATIS and have Aviation Interrupt on?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. However, as long as there is a transmission being received, the Air Scan will not return to scanning the other preset frequencies. We recommend not saving weather frequencies (ATIS, ASOS, AWOS, etc.) as presets, as this will prevent background scanning while receiving the long weather transmissions.

akwebill on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there is a standard BNC connection on the back of the radio for an external antenna.
