Bluetooth Radio with AVIATION INTERRUPT™

Sporty’s Air Scan Aviation Radio/Scanner gives pilots and aviation buffs two radios in one. With our exclusive Aviation Interrupt feature, you can listen to a ball game, talk radio, or music and never miss an aviation transmission. Equipped with Bluetooth, the Air Scan can easily pair with a phone or iPad for playing music from your favorite app. Perfect for your home office, the desk at your FBO, or your workbench in the hangar, the Air Scan is an easy way to monitor aviation traffic while still listening to your favorite music.

Memory

Store up to 10 different frequencies from each tunable source using the Preset feature. This allows you to quickly scroll through your local frequencies without having to type them in every time. The 10 aviation presets are used for Aviation Interrupt feature.

Aviation Interrupt™

While listening to your favorite AM/FM station or Bluetooth/Aux source, the Air Scan silently scans up to 10 preset channels for activity. When a signal is detected on any of these channels it interrupts the music and plays the aviation transmission. When the transmission ends, the Air Scan returns to the music.

Bluetooth/Aux In

Don’t want to listen to FM or AM radio stations? Use the Bluetooth feature to pair your phone or tablet to the radio for listening with your favorite app. You can also use a standard 3.5 aux input cable (sold separately) to plug in your phone or iPad if it has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

External Speaker
Use the 3.5mm headphone jack to connect the Air Scan to external speakers. Here at Sporty's Pilot Shop, we connect an Air Scan to the ramp speakers so linemen never miss a radio call. Also great for surround sound systems or noise canceling headphones.

Package includes Air Scan radio, 100-240V wall plug, telescoping BNC antenna and user guide. Requires wall plug for operation (no batteries).

Air Scan Features:

  • Aviation Interrupt
  • 10 priority aviation memory locations
  • Telescoping antenna with aviation-compatible BNC connector
  • External power jack
  • External speaker jack
  • Auxiliary input jack
  • AM band 520 – 1710 kHz
  • FM band 88 – 108 MHz
  • Aviation Band VHF 117.975 – 137.000 MHz (25 kHz spacing)
  • Bluetooth wireless music streaming
  • Stereo speakers
  • Squelch & volume control knobs

Simplified Programming Instructions

Programming the AirScan radio is similar to programming a car radio. To save a frequency to a preset location:

  1. After turning the Air Scan on, choose the source of the frequency you want to store (AM, FM, or Airband).
  2. Type in the frequency you wish to store.
  3. Press the preset button once to enter into preset mode.
  4. Press and hold the number of preset location where you want to store the frequency.
  5. After holding the number for 2 seconds, the Air Scan will beep and exit preset mode, indicating that the frequency was stored correctly.

To recall a preset frequency:

  1. After turning the Air Scan on, choose the source type of the frequency you want recall (AM, FM, or Airband).
  2. Press the preset button once to enter into preset mode.
  3. Press the number of the preset location you wish to access.
  4. Air Scan will automatically exit preset mode after 3 seconds on inactivity.

Pro Tip:

Reception for scanners is mostly based on line-of-sight. Scanners located deep inside metal buildings will have poor reception. Two rules of thumb for antenna placement: (1) The higher the better and (2) Outside is better than inside.  If you are 10 miles from an airport in a hilly area or there are many tall buildings between you and the airport, you probably won't get the control tower.  However, you may hear aircraft in the pattern.  Testing at Sporty's revealed that we could get transmissions over 25 miles away with an Air Scan in the third-floor control tower.  At ground level, 15 miles was common for planes at 1000 AGL. Remote antennas can improve your reception.

The problem is that it doesn’t reach very far. You have to be basically at the airport.

poor quality and reception
Very poor reception, any handheld is much better. My hangar is about 200 feet from the tower, and that is the ONLY signal I can pick up, and even that comes in with static and poor quality. doesn't matter if the unit is in or out of the hangar and multiple locations...all poor. Quality of construction is very flimsy. Sound quality for music is poor. Bluetooth reliability is all poor. Overall, very disappointed.

Poor Reception, Even AM-FM! No VHF
My $8 Amazon portable transistor radio performs better than this unit. I was really excited about receiving it and can't receive anything. Even powerful local FM stations are full of static. I think some immediate action is required of Sporty's to either provide a better matched BNC cable/antenna system or recall the product. I've been a loyal customer for 40 years and this is disapointing!

Aviation Scanner - Low Sensitivity & Distortion
I am a private pilot. I have used scanner radios 30+ years and have many models. I live near a busy class D airport. The Sporty's radio missed 90% of the aviation transmissions picked up by my simultaneously used 20 year old Radio Shack hand held Pro-60. Multiple locations within home tested. Antenna swap tested. Nothing improved sensitivity. When rarely received, audio was scratchy and/or garbled by over modulation. I returned the radio to Sporty's. I believe they owe me for shipping both directions because this radio does not come any way near living up to the advertising and promotion. We'll see what happens. I do not recommend this receiver to anyone for any purpose. If you do not know better, you will not know what you are missing in aviation radio traffic.

No Range!!!
I got this for Christmas, I live maybe 5 miles from the airport (major airport), I can't pick up anything, tower, ground, atis, nothing. This is a pointless device due to range issues. Sporty's should have thought of this before creating this product, extremely disappointing.

I'd give this 0 stars if I could. STAY AWAY, unless you live on the airport.

Antenna could be more refined.
I like the thought that has gone into the features in the scanner and the audio control (speaker jack, blue tooth & interrupt) flexibility. The antenna I would say is a weakness, my handheld get much better reception located in the same spot. Tried many locations in the house to no avail. I live 1/2 mike from KFNT. I bought a 19 inch vhf antenna (. Nagoya UT-72 Super Loading Coil) and a supporting BNC adapter and find the scanner now works as expected. I think the squelch circuit could be improved it teeters between to much and too little with the slightest touch of the squelch knob, Not as god as my handheld radio squelch authority. All in All not a bad unit I would rate it at 3.5 stars.

BEST ANSWER: The buttons are not backlit.
Can I pair multiple devices to the Air Scan at once?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Air Scan will only pair to one device at a time. Pairing a second device will override the first device. When the Bluetooth source is selected, the Air Scan will attempt to automatically pair with the most recently paired device.
Can I listen to ATIS and have Aviation Interrupt on?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. However, as long as there is a transmission being received, the Air Scan will not return to scanning the other preset frequencies. We recommend not saving weather frequencies (ATIS, ASOS, AWOS, etc.) as presets, as this will prevent background scanning while receiving the long weather transmissions.
can an external outside antenna be connected for better reception?
akwebill on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there is a standard BNC connection on the back of the radio for an external antenna.

BEST ANSWER: We expect to have a 12V power cable in stock in early January.
I called and asked about purchasing the magnetic car antenna for this product with a longer cord. Reception is very poor in my hangar and i am thinking this might stick high to the outside of my hangar and get better reception than the antenna that came with it. I was told by Sportys this was in the works and would be available around the first of February?

Were Is My Radio (Air Scan Aviation) I Pay on time .what happen ? jose manuel
Jose Manuel C on Feb 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: We have found from past experience that most "lost" packages can often be found by checking your local postal officials and /or company mailrooms. Our international airmail shipments are shipped without a tracking number, therefore when you go to the post office ask the clerk to check for your package in the back.
There are lots of bad reception reviews. If I add a decent external antenna and put on the roof will it actually pick up planes then? Prefer more of an answer then yes you can hook up an external antenna for better reception. Will it be GREAT or at least GOOD reception with the roof mounted antenna?
Robert M on Feb 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, an external antenna can help improve reception. Reception is also affected by the strength of the
transmitting station. It is also affected by the topography of the surrounding landscape. If using the included antenna the location in the building can also affect the reception.
Will it work when flying?
A shopper on Jan 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it would work if you had a way to power it (like our 12V adapter: http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/12v-cigarette-lighter-adapter-for-air-scan.html).
Are there any plans for adding military band UHF ATC frequencies to this radio?
t d on Dec 18, 2017

How close to an airport do you need to be?
Sandy M on Nov 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The strength and distance from the transmitter determine how far the signal can be received.
Do I need to be near an airport?
Mario on Nov 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you will need to be fairly close as it is limited by the transmitters output and line of sight.
Can this device be used internationally. Hence a power source of 240 V ?
Abbas F on Nov 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The device can be used internationally - the AC adapter works on 100-240V.
How do I scan aviation memory channels?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Select Airband, then press the Aviation Interrupt button. This will scan any of the 10 preset channels that are stored.
I’m getting lots of static in my garage, but not in my house 30 feet away?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Electronics can cause interference to radio transmissions and receivers. Fluorescent lights, sound amplifiers, generators, etc. may cause interference. Using an external antenna will help, or you may need to move the Air Scan and find a location with less interference.
Can I use batteries with the Air Scan?
Eric C Staff on Nov 16, 2017
