Stratus™ is the simple-to-use, pocket-sized, wireless receiver that transforms your iPad into the ultimate flight tool. Get subscription-free weather, GPS information, ADS-B traffic and backup attitude – all integrated with ForeFlight Mobile. The new Stratus 2S offers additional features and even better performance, but with the same pilot-friendly design that has made Stratus the best-selling ADS-B receiver in aviation.

Subscription-free in-flight weather

In-flight weatherYou can view in-flight weather on your iPad, including NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, NOTAMs and more. It's updated every 5-10 minutes and there are no subscription fees – ever. Stratus Replay allows you to turn off the iPad screen in flight and save battery; when you turn the screen on again, Stratus will automatically send all the weather information you missed. Also includes animated radar, so you can monitor trends in a storm. Just tap the play button.

Stunning synthetic vision display

Synthetic visionForeFlight's new Synthetic Vision feature rewrites the book on situational awareness. With luminous terrain, night sky view, hands-free declutter, and a brilliant obstacle awareness system, ForeFlight with Synthetic Vision will forever change the way you fly. With Stratus 2S, ForeFlight's synthetic vision really comes alive. The built-in AHRS drives a super responsive pitch and bank instrument in the center of the Synthetic Vision view. In an emergency situation, you’ve got a backup glass cockpit on your iPad.

Dual band ADS-B traffic

TrafficStratus 2S includes a dual band (978 MHz and 1090 MHz) ADS-B receiver so it can display traffic information right on the ForeFlight Maps page. See relative altitude, climb/descent rate and projected track. Picks up all aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out as well as some aircraft equipped with Mode C transponders. Note: ADS-B traffic is limited unless your aircraft has ADS-B Out installed in the panel.

WAAS GPS Powers track up and terrain

TerrainWith the built-in WAAS GPS receiver, Stratus allows you to view moving maps, track up displays and high resolution terrain maps in ForeFlight. The smart GPS locks on fast and typically provides 1 meter accuracy. Replaces the need for a separate GPS receiver--Stratus has it all!

Built-in AHRS for backup attitude

Built-in AHRSStratus includes a complete Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) for backup attitude information in the cockpit. It aligns itself automatically, so you can just turn it on and fly. Now you can view a backup attitude indicator, GPS groundspeed and altitude on your iPad--in a beautiful split screen mode right in ForeFlight. (Not to be used for primary reference.)

Automatic flight data recorder

Flight data recorderStratus is the first ADS-B receiver to offer a complete flight data recorder system. When this is enabled, Stratus automatically records your flight--complete with GPS position, altitude speed and attitude. Flight logs are saved in ForeFlight, and can be viewed online, in Google Earth or in the CloudAhoy app. Ideal for proficiency flights and CFIs.

Pressure altitude sensor

AltitudeWith its built-in barometric pressure sensor, Stratus 2S allows ForeFlight to display both pressure altitude and GPS altitude. Plus, ForeFlight’s automatic Cabin Pressure Advisor alerts you when you might need oxygen by flashing a message anytime cabin altitude exceeds 12,000 or 25,000 ft.

The Stratus Platform

Seamless integration with ForeFlight mobile

ForeFlight integrationStratus is the only ADS-B receiver that works with ForeFlight, aviation’s most popular app. That’s because Stratus was designed from the ground up to integrate with the app, so you can view complete status information right from the moving map page. Stratus simply works the right way.

Works with Apple watch

Apple WatchWith a Stratus on board and connected to iPhone, ADS-B weather is delivered right to ForeFlight for Apple Watch. Easily view current METARs for airports in your recents and favorites lists. A customizable dashboard of flight instruments is also available, which helps you keep track of information like ETE, ETA, distance to destination, track, ground speed, GPS altitude, and more.

Designed to work with the Stratus ESG transponder

ADS-B outGet a complete traffic picture when you add Stratus ESG - the only ADS-B Out transponder made specifically for Stratus. This all-in-one solution, which includes a built-in WAAS GPS, meets the 2020 FAA mandate, and offers improved reception and full-time power for your Stratus portable. Certification planned for early 2016.

Pilot-friendly design

  • Outstanding battery life - over 8 hours for all-day flying.
  • Enhanced reception - no external antennas required.

From the Press

"The standby instrument presentations on a tablet (at least an iPad and ForeFlight) have reached a level of sophistication that, in my opinion, allow a high-performance single-engine piston airplane to be safely flown to VFR conditions in an emergency. It's far easier than partial panel flight using a turn coordinator."

- Rick Durden, The Aviation Consumer

"We flew with the Stratus 2S portable ADS-B receiver for over a year to see how it would hold up. It proved solidly reliable in virtually all weather."

"Damaged"" Product
Received the Stratus quickly from Sporty's Pilot Shop. I opened the package......everything was packaged just fine except for the Stratus unit itself. When I pulled the unit out of its pocket, I noticed the unit had dirt on it and after examining it more closely, I noticed many small scuffs all over it and also a red "crayon-like" marking on the side. I called Sporty's customer service line under the assumption that the Stratus unit I received was either used or "refurbished" (not what I had paid for or expected). The associate on the line was friendly to me, but when I told her that I wanted to return the product due to it being scuffed and possibly "used", she quickly informed me that this was a normal occurrence and that the product should work just fine, regardless of its exterior condition. Apparently, other consumers had received their Stratus from the manufacturer with similar "scuff marks" on it and the customer service associate informed me that the padded case the unit came in was the cause of these scuff marks. I find this extremely hard to believe, as the interior of the case had no sharp edges and the Stratus unit fit snugly in its designated spot with absolutely no free movement. I tried repeatedly to plead my case with the customer service associate, but she seemed to be more concerned with defending the manufacturer than with actually listening to my concern. She told me that the unit should work totally fine as advertised regardless of the scuffs and scratches on its exterior. To this argument, I replied with the example of a customer going to buy a "new" car from a dealer, only to discover that their $40,000 brand new car had scratches and scuffs on the paint. I asked her how she would feel if the salesperson told her: "Well, the car should run totally fine....we have a lot of new cars come from the manufacturer with these types of exterior issues". I was met with a reply of silence. Bottom line: I paid almost $1,000 for this product and I do not believe it is unreasonable to expect it to be in pristine, "brand new" condition when it arrives from the manufacturer. I will go ahead and use the product under the expectation that it will work as advertised, BUT if any Sporty's employee is reading this review, PLEASE NOTIFY THE MANUFACTURER and tell them that this is not an acceptable business practice.

I finally spent the money...
I've wanted a Stratus for a long time, but couldn't bring myself to spend the money, because most of the plane that I rent are G1000 and G500. However, I recently bought a Cessna 140 that has not yet been converted. ;) I purchased the Stratus 2s to use on the flight fro Oklahoma to Michigan when retrieving my new plane. Used for 9.3 hours over the long cross country straight out of the box and can't say enough good things about it. My favorite feature is being able to see flight categories and METARs from the air. I'm fresh into my tailwheel time, so it was great to be able to see winds in advance. The Stratus helped me devert twice for more favorable winds. The GPS accuracy is excellent and often showed better than the typical 5 meters that I'm used to seeing from my Garmin Glo. Having the automatic data recording is a bonus, because I tend to forget to start recording in ForeFlight. I have yet to really test the AHARS, but it seems to be very quick when I was messing around with it at home. Of course, the Stratus works seamlessly with ForeFlight and is extremely easy to pair. The included suction cup mount is made by RAM and is very high quality. Save yourself $13 and skip the dash mount. It's pretty much useless, because it slides around easily, which negates calibration. The included carrying case is also very high quality and is made to hold everything you need for mounting and operation. Overall, it is a lot of money to spend, but my opinion is that this unit provides excellent value based on the features it provides. I'm very happy with my purchase and know that it will be a rare occasion that I fly without it.

WOW!!!
I just stepped up from Stratus 1st Generation which is amazing in itself. With the 2S I now have Synthetic Vision on my iPad. Who would have guessed? I got my last rating in 1978, thought RNAV was high tech back then. Whats next?

Equipment failure
I was borrowing a plane to make some trips, and on the 4th leg the vacuum pump just quit. Fortunately I had the stratus 2 antenna coupled with foreflight pro, I was able to complete the trip using the synthetic vision. It was critical to maintain course because I was flying near a TFR, and I didn't want my own air show.

So easy to use
This is a nice piece of technology. Remember the traffic avoidance is not 100% but having weather regardless of altitude without a subscription is worth the cost. It is very easy to use. And yes, you have to be in the air to receive the signal.

GPS Technology at its BEST!
The Stratus 2 w/ a Mini iPad is a great combination for enhanced safety in General Aviation. I've had the system for several years now, and the added value to Alaska flying is unquestionable. I fly in an area where many of the airports have no navigational equipment, nor weather reporting stations, ... the Stratus 2 takes care of the voids in a high tech fashion. The synthetic vision really stands out when flying near mountains and also the shorelines, rivers, obstacles, etc.. Flying is fun, this makes it even better!

If you only buy one thing
for your GA aircraft this should be it. I use it with my iPad in rental aircraft and it's wonderful. Stratus provides me with weather, ADS-B in, and great situational awareness when I couple it with ForeFlight. This is a must-have.

Easy and useful
Makes long trips and flight into crowded airspace much easier. Before Stratus, I used the internal gps and cel-data. GPS was pretty reliable but, weather was hit and miss. On longer trips having near realtime TAF's, winds, and radar is very helpful in assessing the situation and making alternate plans on the iPad is very straightforward. Quite comforting to get more up to date info. Traffic only displays when there's a ADS-B out aircraft near by. In busy airspace, there's usually one or more causing the ADS-B system transmit traffic updates. This isn't true everywhere so you can't count on it unless you're equipped with ADS-B out so, be careful. Mounting is simple, just stick it in a window with the suction mount included. The Stratus is not cheap but, aviation is not a low cost endeavor. Overall, I think the benefits justifies the cost.

Will this work on an original iPad or do I need a newer one?

We are using this equipment in a hospital; multiple patient usage. What do you recommend for cleaning between use?
A shopper on Nov 4, 2016
There is a note that says " Note: ADS-B traffic is limited unless your aircraft has ADS-B Out installed in the panel." What are these limitations? I'm purchasing to use in rental aircraft that are not likely to have ADS-B OUT
Don H on Jul 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Here's a good summary of the ADS-B traffic issue: http://ipadpilotnews.com/2016/01/ads-b-traffic-101-2/
how well does it work for IFR flight? also, where does a person go to get an external antenna and will the system charge off of one of those reserve battery backup chargers?
A shopper on Oct 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You sure can fly IFR. I've litterally flown coast to coast with more than a few hours IMC running on the Stratus with Forelight as my only charting info. Better nav than my certified on-board GPS. Certainly esier to use. I got a little USB power adapter for the cigarrette lighter port for power. One line feeds the Stratus and the other the Ipad. Have flown 9 hour days with no problems. I se no need for an external antenna. As long as the Stratus has a good view of the sky it seems rock solid.
Will Stratus work in Canada?
Alex G on Jan 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The GPS and the AHRS will work in Canada, so you'd have moving map and backup attitude. ADS-B traffic works but is limited in Canada. ADS-B weather does not work in Canada.
Can this unit pair and run 2 iPads at the same time?
A shopper on Aug 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I usually run my mini iPad along with my iPhone on the yoke mount. Great combination, I use the iPad for mainly glass panel nav and the iPhone for airport info and weather info. iPhone info slightly less limited than the iPad, but still works like a charm. I also pack an extra iPad for back up.
I use jeppesen don't use forflight, can this app still work?
Cynthia C on Dec 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Appareo Stratus and Foreflight are essentially made for each other and only each other....it's a shame that they don't open source it for better flexibility for ADS-B transceiver/Receiver options like other EFB and/or ADS-B manufacturers do....there is another EFB company that states on their website that their product will work with Stratus, but I believe that it is only with certain models of Stratus, and that there are glitches that interfere with smooth operation.
Are the external antennas for the 2s required? How well does it work without them?
Greg M on Aug 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I mounted mine behind the panel, so I used the external GPS antenna and hooked the ADS antenna up to an unused belly mounted transponder antenna. It all works excellent. I have many friends that mount their 2s on the on top of the glare shield without external antennas and they say it works perfectly too, although the ADS doesn't pick up as many stations.
Will it charge ok from a 28V DC cigarette lighter connection using the usb cable? Or is it only 12 v tolerant?
Paul B on Aug 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have never had to charge in flight. The battery is good for at least 6-7 hours. It has a USB charging cord so with a suitable cigarette lighter adapter, it should charge.

My aircraft is 24 volt and I use dual amperage (10 amp/ 21 amp adapter) to charge my I pad if necessary and works well. I found the adapter at Amazon for a couple of dollars but I believe Sportys would have something comporable. To be sure, I would call Stratus and pose the question. Best from the horses mouth.
Good luck. Best device I ever purchased.
How much memory on iipad is needed to run forefight mobile ?
Curtis N on Jul 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: AMAP. Depends on how you fly.
If you stay within a couple states...less. On a 16gig foreflight dedicated iPad mini - flying about SoCal, Colorado, Idaho, Wyo, UT, NMex, AZ, there's still plenty room for all that is needed including FARs, approaches, etc..

Some music, photos etc too.
Does it come with a mount?
A shopper on Jul 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does - it includes a suction cup mount for use on a side window.
Does this provide real time weather to Foreflight while in flight?
John L on Sep 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The short answer is "no". I bought mine to use as a strategtic tool for a VFR flight from Connecticut to Alabama and back. At times it seemed real time but this was due to the nature of the pop up thunderstorms which "popped up" as the term implies, but then just stayed in one place as opposed to moving rapidly as they do in the northeast. That said, it was a great tool to have to help decide when it was time to get on the ground as every afternoon it definitely got tricky. For real time tactical information you would need weather radar or a Stormscope as the info on the Stratus could be many minutes old by the time it is displayed for the first time.
Let me get this straight. Stratus II will give me pitch, bank, air speed, altitude, an HSI, synthetic vision, weather, and traffic (in) on my IPad as long as the batteries last for $900?
Darrell S on Oct 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yeah, you got that right. It's good for about 7 hours of flight time on battery power alone. If you plug in to a USB cigarrette lighter adapter it's good indefinitely. You may lose the weather and traffic links on occasion if there are no towers availble within line of sight but it works well in general. I'm running with 2 Ipads with Foreflight and get solid nav data. Have even flown several practice approaches stricly using the Stratus GPS data and it will put you right over the runway. The attitude data can be a little flaky. Not rock solid, but good enough to save your bacon in a no gyro situation.
Will this work with iPhone 6?
Patrick. M on Aug 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It works with my IPhone 6, my IPad and my instructors droid cell which runs a different software. I haven't had any problems.
Is the update rate slow? If I am using this for GPS guidance with Foreflight and will it be slow to update on my iPad Pro. I have used a cellular signal and that is too slow.
Brett F on Aug 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Brett, the Stratus 2S receiver is excellent for VFR use and it is extremely accurate and fast. I've never noticed any lag time as far as GPS position goes. Also, the backup AHRS system and synthetic vision is excellent and extremely responsive. I'd highly recommend buying it. I also use it with iPad pro... Good luck...pedro
Will stratus work with iPad mini without any problems if I also have Garmin gdl39 in use in same aircraft?
A shopper on Jul 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would think that as long as you have Wi-Fi on your i-Pad mini and you get the Foreflight app / subscription, then it should work. I use a regular i-Pad and absolutely love the Stratus . I had the stratus 1 for 3-4 years, but it got to where it would not pick up any of the ground antennas and thus would not give me weather/storm radar on the i-Pad. The Stratus 2 is working great. Hope this helps
Does the G Force Suction Mount work with Stratus? RAM mount fell off the side window twice on my last trip. RAM mount seems weaker than when we first got it 2 years ago.
Doug O on Dec 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: it has worked great for me so far. I have mounted in several places and it has stayed stuck on every bumpy cross country flight on my cessna 150
Does the stratu have synthetic vision?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Stratus 2 does not in itself offer synthetic vision. It provides the necessary feed to ForeFlight Pro that gives you synthetic vision. You have to have ForeFlight pro and not the lesser version to get synthetic vision. The Stratus provides ADS/B reception on both channels as well as GPS WAAS,attitude output to ForeFlight pro, and a number of other items to Fore Flight, but only ForeFlight pro gives you synthetic vision when using the Stratus 2 as the feed.
Will this work in Hawaii?
A shopper on Sep 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. It was recently purchased, and the Stratus 2S is being used in a Beechcraft BE-58, Honolulu International Airport. Very accurate. Excellent display. Good supplement to any aircraft.
will this unit work with the latest Ipad mini 4 ?
dave c on Aug 29, 2016

Where and how to mount?
A shopper on Jul 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The unit includes a suction cup mount.
Does it works full properties in Italy?
Roberto P on Jul 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, the Stratus will only work as a WAAS GPS outside of the US.
My battery will only hold a charge for 2-3 hours. Can the battery be replaced?
Donna S on Jun 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes the battery can be replaced. There are no user serviceable parts.

Please try a factory reset by pushing and holding the power button for approximately 30 seconds, then release. The stratus unit lights will flash and the unit will reset. Then attempt to charge the battery. If this does not resolve the problem, Please return the stratus to Sportys for service.
Does the Stratus™ 2S ADS-B Receiver for iPad cover the 2020 FAA mandate for ADS-Out?
Dwight R on Jun 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Stratus 2S does not meet the mandate for 2020.

A shopper on May 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You do not need an iPad with cellular service.
Does stratus 2 provide cellular service for purchase price?
A shopper on May 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The stratus 2S does not provide cellular service or and internet connections. It uses the wifi connect to connect to the iPad to provide data for the Foreflight aap.

Can you make wifi phone texts?
A shopper on May 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, the WiFi just sends data from the Stratus to your iPad. There is no internet connection.
I fly a CJ4 at high altitudes (40000) with heated windshields (front and side). Will the Stratus 2 pull in weather and traffic in this environment?
Bob N on May 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It works great. I fly a Falcon and I use it every flight without any issues. I would highly recommend.
