Stratus portable connector kit

This kit includes a connection plate and wires. With this connection, your portable Stratus ADS-B receiver gets full-time power from the aircraft's panel so you never have to charge your Stratus battery, and it uses the aircraft's external GPS and ADS-B antennas for improved reception. This kit is $150. Specify Stratus 2 or Stratus 1S/2S.

Stratus 2i

Stratus 2i is a remote-mounted ADS-B receiver that provides weather, traffic, GPS and backup attitude. It is wired directly to and depends on Stratus ESG to operate, so it will not work as a standalone product. Stratus 2i is $500.

If you don't have a Stratus portable, but would still like to receive ADS-B In data, there is another option. Stratus 2i is a remote-mount, non-certified ADS-B receiver that connects to Stratus ESG. While it won't work on its own (there is no internal battery or GPS receiver), it is an affordable way to add ADS-B In to your airplane. You'll see weather, traffic, GPS position and backup attitude on your iPad, all send via WiFi. Simply select Stratus 2i above ($500).

What does it use as the altitude encoder? Does it use the existing altitude encoder or is one built in?

There's no nearby approved avionics shop near me. I'd really consider purchasing this, if I could get it done by the avionics place at my home station, but they aren't on the list. Whats up with that? if install is so easy, why can it only be done by one of your "approved" shops...[and by the way, I've been to one of these approved shops (that is on your list) and wasn't happy with their work (on something else), so I'm surmising it must not be a we-want-you-to-use-a-higher-quality-shop for install kind of thing].

BEST ANSWER: Because it's a transponder, it needs a transponder check before it can be returned to service. That means most A&Ps can't do it. If there's an avionics shop you'd like to use that's not on the list, let us know - Appareo is adding dealers all the time and they might be able to get yours added quickly.
I would like to have the unit sent to me to install in my Piper. I have my Commercial FCC license and can work on avionics and an air frame mechanic to take care of weight and balance and physical installation. Can it not be sent to me?

BEST ANSWER: Appareo's policy is to ship certified versions of Stratus ESG to an Appareo dealer.
In the future, should I decide to give up ForeFlight and Ipad use, Will this unit still comply with the 2020 mandate as a stand alone.?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will still comply. The unit is all you need to be 2020 ready, its ability to interface with ForeFlight and your iPad is dependent on the Stratus portable ADS-B unit such as a Stratus 2S, 2, 1S etc. Stratus ESG is the ADS-B Out portion, Stratus portable is the ADS-B In portion. Only ADS-B Out is required by the 2020 mandate.
What is the difference between ESG and ESGi?

BEST ANSWER: ESGi is simply the ESG transponder (ADS-B Out) plus the Stratus 2i (ADS-B In). It's a complete kit.
As I read the previous responses to previous questions, it appears that sale of the ESG product is not available to AI's (IA's) to perform the install if they are not included as an approved dealer, yes or no? If the IA already does business with an entity that performs the transponder checks (for A, C, S, etc...) post repairs, will the ESG product be made available?

BEST ANSWER: No, the GPS source is only used for the transponder and for use with ForeFlight on an iPad.
According to Adventure Pilot their I-Fly 700 will work with Stratus via a "serial wred (I assume that is "wired" ) connection". Does the Stratus ESG have this capability?

I dont see this question below. I have a 172N with 24V system, and an old school 6-pack avionics with an MKM and ARC radio, and encoding altimeter without RS 232. Any issues with STC and installation? I want to have both ADS-B in and out, and Ipad is the preferred screen choice.

BEST ANSWER: None that I am aware of. You may need a different encoding altimeter. This will supply the ADS-B out. You would still need the Stratus 1s or 2s for ADS-b in with the iPad.
Is Stratus still only useful with Foreflight, or can other EFBs use it?

BEST ANSWER: The ESG Experimental is the exact same unit as the certified. The certified unit include all required documentation that is required by the FAA. The documentation is not required by and experimental aircraft.
